After reading my first reflective journal, it has allowed me to stop and think how far we have already come working with the men at our shelter. On our first day we encounter a few rough patches, we were required to stay in a hot room for about 45 minutes before someone showed up to give us some direction. We were told to come out to the common area to talk to the guys, so we sat there for about another 45 minutes until anyone was able to approach us. After a quick introduction some of the guys approached us and talked about some of the concerns they had, some of them thought we were there to do health assessment and provide care, but at time there is still some confusion about why we are there.
Since the beginning I have been unsure of what we were going to be doing, and how we were going to be able to interact with the guys. I had no idea what kind of services I was going to be able to perform, or what my role was supposed to be for a community health nurse at the shelter. I struggle with some thoughts in my head on how was I going to be open-minded and be non judgmental during my time …show more content…
We have hopes that we can open the topic of conversation with the guys about how important it is to have themselves tested and how they can protect themselves from getting the disease. Aids CT will be coming to our shelters two times a month to test any of the residents that would like to get tested until they have reach the shelter saturation level. This is very important for the guys due to Hartford being the number one city in the state, with the highest number of 1,495.5 people in 2014 living with HIV. The poverty level is a major concern for the city since its rate was about 34.4% in the year 2014.
