The following reflection explores my experience and learning as I venture into higher education via online learning this semester. As part of this exploration, I have reviewed my learning of time management techniques, motivation theories, deep and surface approaches to learning against the backdrop of this journey. I have included the thinking of others, my own experience and how this has and will affect my engagement online in the future.

I have had mixed experiences over the past six weeks, when working through the materials and activities. However, I consider that both the positive and negative events have led me to reflect and develop a deeper understanding of the practice associated with online learning and each of the topics (Biggs & Moore 1993).

I continue to work at each of the tasks required and apply a ‘read extra’ approach. This is challenging in the time available. However, I came into this degree wanting to learn as much as possible. Time management techniques, as reflected in my journal, allow me to stop, reflect on priorities and get organised. I have long term and daily planners (Time Management, p.2). I am also applying the 80/20 Pareto Principle. I take regular breaks and reduce the work periods. These are productive and achievable chunks of study (Jay 2002, p.68). I now know that not only does this provide a structured approach to my learning, but it also gives me a sense of control.

I mentioned in my journal, that I have post-polio syndrome. I have developed plans that accommodate the unknown lengthy periods of sleep. I rewrite the time table regularly and shuffle things around. This was a concern for me right from the beginning. However, I have discovered that by having a plan, even though I have to review it. As Csikszentmihalyi, (cited in Kelly, W 2003, p. 1123) suggests, it sustains my confidence and reduces my anxiety

...“Being a caregiver of senior people is a challenge” this is my contemplation after I went to the field visit. I observed a numerous of learning situations in the area of aged care facilities. I explored myself with the permition of my facilitator to look around and have a little time conversation to elderly people. What labels, that you dislike, have been applied to you or to groups (for example: ethnic, social, cultural, professional, etc.) to which you belong?
