“Regret”
Feel sad, repentant, or disappointed over (something that has happened or been done, esp. a loss or missed opportunity).www.Dictionary.com Currently, a student at ITT-TECH, in my third quarter, I have to face one of my biggest mistakes every day of my life. I graduated in 1988 from Newnan High School with high honors. Fortunately, high school academics were easy for me. It was everything else about high school that I hated. I decided to take a year off before going to college. At least that is what I told my parents. Deep down, I believe I knew that I wouldn’t go. During my senior year I took the SAT and did very well. I sent my scores to several schools. My counselors would get upset with me because I would accept their help to apply for scholarships. About midway through my senior year I finally gave in and applied for scholarships. For a moment I was actually serious about it. By graduation, I was told that every school that I sent my SAT scores to were interested and that I qualified for several scholarships. According to my counselors, I could probably get a free ride to nearly any school that I showed interest in. But I was eighteen years old and thought that I had the world by the tail. It took several years for me to realize just how foolish I was.
Regardless of my foolish decision, I worked hard and in my early thirties I had a pretty good job as a supervisor with McNeilus Manufacturing Company. My family and I were living comfortably and I had invested some money towards my kids’ education. All signs pointed to me moving up in the company and eventually retiring from there and living out my golden years without a whole lot of unforeseen difficulties. Along came the recession. One day, the Vice President from our main branch in Minnesota walked in and announced that our

Regrets

...all have regrets in life. There are things we wish we hadn’t done, and other things we wish we would have accomplished. How many of us wished they haven’t done something, or wish they’ve had done it differently. Regrets are a part of being a human being. We all do things we regret at some point. We are never satisfied with what we have, we always want more, then comes regrets. We regret not spending time with our loved ones, we also regret spending time focusing on silly things. If I knew that today was my last day on earth, what are the things I would want to change? That’s the question I would have asked myself. There is nothing I would regret more than nothing living my life the way I want to live it, or to live a life full of regrets and unanswered questions. I think that the things we do and the decisions we make reflect on our personality. No matter how terrible the decision seems at the moment, but there is nothing I would change in my life. We learn from our mistakes, we shouldn’t regret those mistakes. However, how can we live a life with no regrets? I don’t think it’s possible to not have regrets at all. I wish I wouldn’t have taken two courses with 4 credits each, I regret my decision. I was overwhelmed, and did not want to drop a course, I thought I could succeed in both of them, but unfortunately I failed both classes. I think that it was meant to be, but if had worked a little bit harder I wouldn’t be on probation today. Then, yes I do regret my decision...

Blindness and Regret

...Malanee Janes Mrs. Ashmore Dual English IV 23 September 2014 Blindness and Regret The play Oedipus Rex, written by Sophocles has a lot to do with excess. Mainly dealing with how some of the actors of this play lack the ability to use moderation. Greeks believed in moderation, but in this curtain scenario that’s not the case. In fact the play Oedipus Rex abuses excess on many different levels just like we do here in the 20 and 21st century. The problem in which we use excess quiet heavily, is the worldwide disaster of a thing we use everyday, the Internet. If we ‘d gone by the Greeks way of thinking by using moderation, the world wouldn’t be such a messed up place like it is today. People created Internet to make our lives easier, but yet it complicates our lives and gives everyone virtually no privacy in their everyday lives. Our entire lives can be discovered by a total stranger, anywhere from where a person lives, to how much income a person makes, even the contents of their backyard which makes everyone of us vulnerable to the people around us just because we’ve abused and excessively taken advantage of computer technology. Our personal lives and accumulations aren’t private anymore. Which is in certain cases threatening, this allows people to be in our lives who really have no business being in good, bad, or otherwise. In the play Oedipus Rex, Oedipus lacks in using moderation, which he instead uses a lot of excess, “Than once more I must bring what is dark to light”(DiYanni...

Regret Mapping

...current workplace, everyone has certain regrets with the current job. The modern society also offers unlimited opportunities for those who seek out. I try to map some of the common regrets that are faced by the employees in their mid-20s working in corporate environment and how it has affected their attitude towards work. | Introduction The research tries to map the commonly found regrets among the working class in their workplace, the reason for the regret and the implications of that. A lot of research has been done in the Organisation Behaviour to identify the job regrets and their causes and results. Some of the common theories are examined against the findings from 10 of the volunteers. The answers will help in understanding the validity of the theories which were designed before the information age. Examination of such old theories raises questions about their fit in the current organisational context, new-age employees and their changed attitudes towards workplaces. Research Methodology Regret mapping was done for 10 volunteers in the age group of 24-26 working in a corporate setup. Before taking the interview, they were told about the purpose of the interview. They were also assured about the confidentiality of their responses. Though nobody declined to record the interview, 3 of them reconfirmed about the confidentiality. 2 of the respondents were told in detail about their input earlier and were prepared with the list of regrets while the responses of the rest 8...

Regret by Kate Chopin

...Regret by Kate Chopin MAMZELLE AURLIE possessed a good strong figure, ruddy cheeks, hair that was changing from brown to gray, and a determined eye. She wore a man's hat about the farm, and an old blue army overcoat when it was cold, and sometimes top-boots. Mamzelle Aurlie had never thought of marrying. She had never been in love. At the age of twenty she had received a proposal, which she had promptly declined, and at the age of fifty she had not yet lived to regret it. So she was quite alone in the world, except for her dog Ponto, and the negroes who lived in her cabins and worked her crops, and the fowls, a few cows, a couple of mules, her gun (with which she shot chicken-hawks), and her religion. One morning Mamzelle Aurlie stood upon her gallery, contemplating, with arms akimbo, a small band of very small children who, to all intents and purposes, might have fallen from the clouds, so unexpected and bewildering was their coming, and so unwelcome. They were the children of her nearest neighbor, Odile, who was not such a near neighbor, after all. The young woman had appeared but five minutes before, accompanied by these four children. In her arms she carried little Lodie; she dragged Ti Nomme by an unwilling hand; while Marcline and Marclette followed with irresolute steps. Her face was red and disfigured from tears and excitement. She had been summoned to a neighboring parish by the dangerous illness of her mother; her husband was away in Texas -- it seemed...

On the Shallowness of Bratman's No Regret Condition

...Alex Pond Phil 4010 Dec. 2, 2014 On the Shallowness of the No Regret Condition I would disbelieve the person who claimed to have never experienced regret. There are so many triggers for this emotion that to have completely avoided it, one may question the authenticity of the social existence of the agent that has managed this avoidance. Bratman initially proposes the no regret condition in an attempt to explain how rational agents may stick to prior plans in the face of a temporary preference reversal. I will argue in this paper that in doing so he makes a positive contribution to practical reasoning theory, but his defense of the condition is contradictory, and highlights underlying commitments he has made regarding what we are ontologically that I believe to be misguided. The working example is that Chrisoula desires to work on a paper, which is to be published, tonight after dinner. During dinner she enjoys a glass of wine, and after she has finished that glass, she genuinely desires another. Knowing fully well that having consumed two glasses of wine, her cognitive and articulative abilities will be noticeably impaired; these two evaluative rankings are mutually exclusive (insofar as Chrisoula values the quality of her work). What should she do? There is a sense that, in their immediacy, evaluative rankings hold equal sway in the decision making process of the decider. The desire Chrisoula had, before dinner, to work on her paper, was equally as strong as her desire...

Sad Ending/Regret

...I was suddenly awakened in the middle of night. As I glanced around there was no one except me,laying on an uncomfortable bed.Slowly,I got down from my bed and tiptoed to the window.A slight of cool breeze whipped to my ears.Dead leaves rattled in the wind. There was a stony prickling silence except for the eerie sound of chilly wind howling in the air.Goosebumps sprouted on my skin all over my frail body.A sliver of moonlight glimmered through the wind, slicing my pallid face.Slowly,I swept my dry face and sighed heavily.I had same dream that haunted me for years .A streak of remorse jabbed into my soul.A purged of guilt poured deep into my heart.I had a bad memory. The memory was glistening trough my luminous intriguing dark eyes. Karakura Town was exceptionally blissful on that day.The sun shone brightly through foliage of hazel maple trees lining the road and puffy clouds briskly skimmed the sky.High in the air, avian were fluttering in the formation of chilly wind, spiraling and squawing. From far,I could see de luxe luxurious majestic ship sailed into the harbor.Kyllie ,my best friend enthusiastically waving towards Luke (my fiancée) and I .We were invited by Kyllie to celebrate her grand birthday party at her imposing picturesque manor on Hayaki Island. How to Get a Tattoo You Won't Regret

...How to Get a Tattoo That You Won’t Regret Introduction * I will give some statistics about the number of tattooed adults in the United States and say something about how people aren’t taught about tattoos. * “According to Science News, 21% of Americans have a tattoo – That’s more than one in five.” Goal * There is so much stuff about tattoos that I wanted to cover but couldn’t because of the time limit. So, I’m focusing on the most important things to think about when getting a tattoo. Thesis * When getting a tattoo, it is important to consider tattoo placement, select the proper artist/shop, and observe “tattoo etiquette.” Body 1. Tattoo placement is important to consider. * You must decide where you want to get your tattoo. * Pain is not the most important thing to think about when considering tattoo placement. * I will discuss the “no future club” with the appropriate visual aid. Transition * I’ll say something like “The next thing to think about is selecting the right artist/shop.” 2. You must pick a tattoo artist and tattoo shop. * Someone should pick their tattoo artist based on the artist’s reputation and style specialization. * I will discuss why it is important to view getting a tattoo as establishing a relationship with an artist and not as a one time thing. * An artist will be more inspired/creative if you get a tattoo style they specialize in. * You should get tattooed at a reputable tattoo parlor...

Relationship Between Unplanned Buying and Post Purchase Regret

...Relationship Between Unplanned Buying And Post Purchase Regret Introduction: The theory of cognitive dissonance was developed in 1957 by Leon Festiner. Festinger describes cognitive dissonance as a psychological state which results when a person perceives that two cognitions both of which he believes to be true, do not “fit” together; that is, they seem inconsistent. The resulting dissonance produces tension, which serves to motivate the individual to bring harmony to inconsistent elements and thereby reduce psychological tension (Loudon, Bitta 2006) Regret arises from individuals expending cognitive efforts to consider the chosen option against the rejected options (Inman, Dyer, and Jia 1997). Individuals must think in order to feel regret. For individuals to experience regret, they have to cognitively process and cross-compare one option (chosen) to another option (foregone). If the result of the comparison is perceived to be unfavourable (i.e. the foregone option is perceived to be better than the present option), then individuals are prone to feeling regret over their actions. According to Sugden (1985) regret has been known to be a painful sensation that arises as a result of comparing ‘what is’ with ‘what might have been. Regrets about what one has failed to do or what one has done are common. It has been defined as the negative cognitively-based emotion that we experience when realizing or imagining that our present situation would have...

Regret and Loneliness in "What My Lips Have Kissed"

...Regret and Loneliness in “What Lips My Lips Have Kissed” In the poem “What Lips My Lips Have Kissed” by Edna St. Vincent Millay, there is a theme of loneliness and regret. The speaker is a woman looking back with melancholy reflection to the days of her youth when her life was full of hope and the promise of love. She remembers she once had lovers but she cannot recall them individually. Now she is alone left with only regret: for the unremembered faces of her past, for the passing of her youth, and for the loneliness of her life now. The speaker regrets her inability to remember “What lips [her] lips have kissed” (Line 1). No special man or moment comes to her mind. Her memories of her former glory days haunt her. Although she cannot recall any of her lovers in particular, she hears them as she listens to the rain; unclear faces in her mind like “ghosts…that tap and sigh / Upon the glass” (ll. 3-4). Her heart aches for the “unremembered lads” that had once shared her bed. (l.7). She regrets her youth is now behind her. She compares herself to the seasons with her youth as “summer” (l.13) which is warm and green. Now she is in the time of “winter” (l.9), stark, bleak, and dreary. Those days when she was young and carefree she thought would last forever; but looking back, they seemed to have lasted only “a little while”(14). The speaker is alone: “In winter stands the lonely tree” (l.9). She cannot remember “What loves have come and gone” (l.12). She...

Hbr Case: Give My Regrets to Wall Street?

...Should First Rangeway remain public or go private? Since First Rangeway Consulting went on public, Kenneth, the CEO, has faced various challenges. The senior management at First Rangeway is considering whether it should remain public or go private. We think that First Rangeway should stay public.  Management transparency: As a publicly traded company, there are many regulatory requirements that the First Range should follow. It has to disclose more information to protect investors’ right and improve its internal control system. Transparent corporate environment would add to its value and build trusts in the market.  Analyst calls: Although Ken didn’t like to have conference calls with analysts; it helps the company to set the short term and long term goals. CEO should have a clear picture of the company when he confront analyst and take questions. He will be able to detect potential problems and plan better by preparing quarterly calls. In addition, sometimes analysts provide valuable insights to the company.  Talented human capitals: First Rangeway was able to hire bright students from top MBA schools. One of the important reasons for them to choose the company would be the good reputation and growth potential. If the First Rangeway decide to go private, it would be hard to maintain the high growth rate. Accordingly, it would be questionable if the company is still attractive for young associates to stay. ...

...In his Forbe’s article, “My Biggest Regret In Life: Going to College”, Neil Patel explains why going to college was a waste of time for him. Patel begins his article by saying that if he hadn’t gone to college he’d be farther along his entrepreneurial journey. Patel also says that people shouldn’t change their plans and not go to college as there are some careers in which attending college is an essential requirement. The author states that going to college wasn’t a requirement for his career ambitions and for this reasons he wishes he hadn’t gone. Patel’s first regret in going to college lies in that he believes that college didn’t teach him critical thinking. Patel went to college expecting to “sharpen his critical thinking skills” but he...

Let the Love Pour in

...2015 Let the Love Pour In The short story, “Regret,” by Kate Chopin portrays a woman struggling to accept her loneliness and regret of never having children. In this story, Chopin is saying that in order to experience life fully, a woman needs a child or children to love and care for, and, if the woman is not a part of mother hood, she will live to regret it. Chopin begins the story with mentioning how independent the main character, Mamzelle Aurlie, is and then, after watching four children, Chopin ends the story with how alone and full of regret the character is (Chopin). Although modern views of the definition of a woman may seem to be in complete contrast to what is being portrayed in “Regret,” there are also many ways in which “Regret,” reflects and has influenced the modern look at womanhood. Mamzelle Aurlie’s independence, her conflict of having to suddenly watch four children, and, in the end, her regret, develop the idea of womanhood and happiness being incomplete without a child or children in Kate Chopin’s story “Regret.” This story shows two different sides of a woman, an independent side and a dependent side. Chopin starts the story off with mentioning how independent the character, Mamzelle Aurlie, is by saying, “Mamzelle Aurlie had never thought of marrying. She had never been in love. At the age of twenty she had received a proposal, which she had promptly declined, and at the age of fifty she had not yet lived to regret it” (Chopin). Her independence is what defines...

The Road Not Taken

...reason the choice becomes so important for the traveler. He thinks not only about the right way to choose in the forest but also about the right path in life. That is the reason we can feel the switch of the mood by the end of the poem. When the traveler realizes that he will not be able to take another road, left by in the past, he regrets it as lost opportunity. He is disappointed because of the opportunity he missed. He states: “I kept the first for another day!” and we can hear regret in his tone. Now he realizes that his choice was final and looking at the road he did not choose, he “doubted if I should ever come back”. By the end of his journey the traveler realizes that each decision we take influences all our further life and this decision cannot be changed. Decisions we take cannot be cancelled and each moment of our life we make choices, which determine our life. By the end of the poem the traveler realizes this truth and that is the reason we can hear a shade of regret in his worlds. We can see that he regrets about the lost opportunity. “I took the road less traveled by and that had made all the difference,” – he states with regret. In the lines...
