...Liberty University Planting Churches Cross-Culturally: North America and Beyond A Book Critique Submitted to Dr. William Brown In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Course Evan 505 Liberty University Baptist Theological Seminary By Joshua Byun Lancaster, California Sunday, September 1, 2013 Hesselgrave, David J. Planting Churches Cross-Culturally: North America and Beyond. 2nd ed. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2000. Kindle ebook. pp. 6174. Introduction The importance of both the existence and the role of the church in the New Testament era are prevalent through the scriptures. As a result, numerous books and resources on church planting and church growth have become more available in recent years. David Hesselgrave through the book, Planting Churches Cross-Culturally: North America and Beyond, provides a combination of both biblical principles and a step-by-step approach to church planting in the modern era. From the beginning Hesselgrave states his thesis as he explains, “The primary mission of the church and, therefore, of the churches is to proclaim the gospel of Christ and gather believers into local churches where they can be built up in the faith and made effective in service; thus new congregations are to be planted throughout the world” (161). Hence, the author defines the core Christian mission as church planting then proceeds to explain the concept both biblically and practically through the example established...

...one under the theology department. Others have gone beyond to see it as department on its own. This uncertainty if I may put it, speaks of missiology as an interdisciplinary subject that needs great attention in dealing with it. This piece of work attempts to research into the competing definitions of missiology at the same time draw basic elements that any missiological models. My choice of these questions is primarily based on the notion that any definition of missiology should also reflect the basic elements of the missiological model. Missiology is the academic discipline or science which researches, records and applies data relating to the biblical origin, history (including the use of documentary materials), anthropological principles, techniques and the theological base of the Christian mission (Tippet 1987, xiii). If this as Tippet puts it, then the theology, methodology and data bank as a church are particularly directed towards: 1. The processes by which the Christian message is communicated, 2. The encounters brought about by its proclamation to non-Christians, 3. The planting of the church and organization of congregations, the incorporation of converts into those congregations, and the growth and relevance of their structures and fellowship, internally to maturity, externally in outreach as the Body of Christ in local situations and beyond, in a variety of cultural patterns. In light of all these, how should missiology be defined? The simplest definition...

... Christian Relationships Unit 1: Worship 1. Preliminary concerns 1.1. Misconceptions about worship The first popular misconception is that ‘worship is singing’. We treat ‘worship’ and ‘singing praises’ as synonymous terms. We speak as if they are the same thing. To reduce worship to singing is to dilute the biblical concept of worship in a way that is grossly irresponsible. It reduces the richness of biblical worship to one of its components. Yet when many Christians today commonly speak about worship, they mean nothing more than ‘singing’. |When you think or speak of worship, do you automatically associate it with ‘singing worship songs’? Is this the common usage| |in your church? If so, how do you think this fault crept into your vocabulary? | | | There are probably many ways this misconception has crept into our language and our thought. One key factor is that we have tended to label Christian music as ‘worship’, and we often call the person who leads the singing in our churches ‘the worship leader’. Unfortunately, this has caused us to equate worship with singing. A second misconception is that ‘worship is something we do on special occasions’. Worship is what we do when we gather with God’s people. The activities that make up our Sunday...
