Introduction Many organizations today utilize information technology (IT) for their day to day operations. IT has become essential in the growth, long life, and support of a business. The best demonstration of leadership at an organization for achieving the goals and objectives of IT is through IT execution. Governance is about leadership. IT Governance is unique to each organization and defined in Graziadio Business Review as, “the decision rights and accountability framework for encouraging desirable behavior in the use of IT.” (Chun Ph.d., 2005) Governance helps business leaders to be responsible for the success of IT in working with the organization’s mission and goals. IT execution is dictated by IT governance in a way that is vital to the success of the business strategy, goals, and mission.
What is Governance?
As mentioned above and stated in almost all writing on the subject, IT governance’s most important part is to match the business IT operations with the business strategies. "Governance" is derived from the Greek verb kubernáo meaning "to steer." Patel (2002; 3143) says that IT governance is placement of IT in line with business goals or delivery of business opportunities from IT. Van Grembergen (2003; 242) describes IT governance as the organizational management of IT and business process in a way that IT is integrated with business. IT governance is also a set of processes where IT costs are kept in control. IT governance has also been defined as a means of ensuring the achievement of the expected benefits of IT. This piece identifies IT governance as building blocks of processes in IT, controlled to give the best bag for the buck in IT, to align business mission and balancing risks at the same time.
