8 December 2015 1. Briefly tell the lives of Buddha and Muhammad. How did their life experiences affect their teaching? (10 points) Siddhartha – whose name means “the one whose objective is attained” – was born into a noble family around the year 560 AC. in the city of Kapilavastu in Nepal.
Legend says that at the moment that his mother was making love with his father, she had a vision: six elephants, each one with a lotus flower on his back, were coming in her direction. The next instant, Siddhartha was conceived.
During her pregnancy, Queen Maya, his mother, decided to call the wise men in the kingdom to interpret the vision she had had, and they were unanimous in affirming that the child about to be brought into the world would be a great king or a great priest.
Siddhartha’s childhood and adolescence were very like ours; his parents wanted by all means to protect their son from knowing about the misery of the world. So he led his life confined between the walls of the gigantic palace where his parents lived and where everything seemed perfect and harmonious. He married, had a son and knew only the pleasures and delights of life. Eventually, Siddhartha wanted to keep being in the city, whilst being in the city the deprivation of the sight of suffering in his life finally became a reality to him. Shortly thereafter, he became enlightened.

2. Tell some ways that Hinduism and Buddhism are similar. Why is this so? (10 points)
Every being wants happiness and does not want suffering. This means to respect all around you. Both religions hold a high degree of compassion for others.
They each have their own set of rules and methods, but what's more important, is the particular objects which are found sacred. In India, home to the biggest Hindu population, it is the river Ganges. Since civilization has existed it has been an important and holy area. In Buddhist thought, it is nature which guides you to each step you take, just as the water flows through the land. This is so, mostly because Buddha was interconnected with both religions and is credited with a founder of one of them so some beliefs carried over. 3. Name and describe the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. (15 points)
Baptism- Dipping or sprinkling of holy water and oils on the person symbolizing the purification and admission into the Christian church.
Eucharist- Also known as communion is the first time you get to participate in the drinking and eating of the wine symbolizing Jesus’ blood and the bread symbolizing his flesh as Jesus did at the Last Supper.
Reconciliation- This Sacrament is when you go to a Priest and confess your sins who will then give you a penance to do, like say a certain amount of prayers.
Confirmation- An adult member of the Catholic Church confirming his beliefs in front of the congregation and becoming a member on his own.
Holy Matrimony- When two people of the Catholic faith get married in the Church of God and God as your witnesses.
Holy Orders- When a person gets ordained and becomes a Priest.
Anointing of the Sick- If you’re sick you can come forth and get blessed in front of the congregation at your church by the priest.

4. Briefly compare and contrast the lives of two spiritual heroes that we have studied. (10 points)
Two spiritual heroes I compare together are Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. because the basis of their teachings were so similar. Both of their teachings were based on how much we have in common with each other, with MLK Jr. He wanted freedom for all races and equality. Gandhi just wanted religions to stop fighting and understand how much all of our religions are based off of the same roots of a God and many prophets. 5. What relationship do you see between violence and the lives of the spiritual heroes that we have studied? Does the popularity of Guan Yin (Kwan Yin) relate to this in any way? (10 points)
The relationship between violence and all of the spiritual heroes was non-existent from their side, most of the time violence was induced from the other parties. None of them condoned violence because what they were all searching for was peace and equality. Yes I do believe the popularity of Guan Yin is related to the spiritual heroes in ways because I think they all believed in getting to her level of compassion, kindness and love with her being the goddess of them all. Many of them didn’t believe in her and may have not even known of her but all tried to be as much like her without noticing it. 6. How can you relate the life or teaching of a spiritual hero or heroes to your own life? (15 points)
In my life the teaching of Martin Luther King Jr. I relate most to MLK because he always orated the idea of equality. Whilst I may have never been a victim of racism, because I am white, I see supremacy every day. Supremacy only exists because the other minorities insist they are treated unfairly. Honestly, I hate to see it. This problem will persist until everyone can look past all differences. At the same time, our country never had these problems when we more closely followed the reformation of the United States. Discrimination against people who are queer, or abnormal is another reason the nation has problems. But, in today’s world we have to accept it otherwise it is unlawful

Comparative Religion Final Exam

...Comparative Religion Final Exam 3. Compare the ways that Eastern and Western religions deal with the animal world.  To what extent do these practices reflect a respect for life? Western revealed religions, such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, human nature has a set of external checks and balances. Eastern religions, such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, more focus on improving the self-cultivation. Human beings should be kings upon the animals’ world in western religions. When God created the real world, God created animals, but all the animals don’t have the intelligence, but the human beings have the intelligence, so God created human, let them control the animals’ world. Because only people worship their God, only people can communicate with the God. People always use the animals to offer up a sacrifice in these three religions. In eastern religions, people are living with all the animals, and all the human beings and animals need to be focus the rule “coming again and again”. In Buddhism, Buddhists pursue nirvana and assert that Elysium is the final destination, so people cannot kill the animals, just because they are all have life, everything which was alive, that cannot be killed, should be respected. In Taoism, Lao Tzu said, “when people was born, they are so kind.” So in these three religions in eastern, people always respect the animals, and make a balance of the nature world. In eastern religions, they believe in saints’ conscientious. But in western...

...one of the most popular religions, they are more likely to say that the deceased will get reincarnated. It is all in a culture and religions aspect of the other world. Where do we go when we die? Do we really know? The United Church of Bacon says that they enjoy the life they are living now and don’t believe in an afterlife as there is no proof. Christians believe we go to heaven or hell depending on how we lived our life and Jains see afterlife as a depiction of what you did when you were alive. You can either be reborn, go to one of the eight levels of hell or join the liberated souls in the highest level of heaven. Afterlife is a big part of all religions as many religions live by the fact of what you did during your lifetime will make the ultimate decision for when you die. There is no definite answer on where we go because so many of us believe in different things. Whilst studying the different afterlife’s it was interesting to learn everyone theories. If you are Muslim you are spending your present life getting ready for your next life. “According to Hinduism, death is regarded as a natural process in the existence of soul as a separate entity” (Religious Movements). Many religions are based on the thesis of an afterlife, where you will go after death is all dependent on the God you serve. Religions of the World (Final)

...In the world today there are many religions that any person can choose to worship, some of these are Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam as well as many more than one can choose to follow. Therefore, people are pushed toward certain religions. Most often people learn religion from what their parents believe in, for example the first religion I ever learned about is Baptist. Religious stories have been inspirational to many children all over the world of every religion; a good example of this is the biblical story of David versus Goliath. Most laws that I know of are close to the Ten Commandments from the Bible. Religion can play a vital role in teaching morals and ethics. The two religions that I chose to compare are Catholicism and Judaism I chose these because they are two religions that are interesting. These religions are extremely similar but in some ways they are polar opposites. The religion I chose to do an interview with a member of is Catholicism I did my interview at “Our Lady of Fatima Church” in Alcoa, Tennessee. The church itself is very beautiful. The location of the church is ideal to people in Alcoa and Maryville Tennessee. Inside the church they have their own baptismal pool. I believe that the church is one of the most beautiful churches I have seen. The church is a very large building with a fewer smaller buildings connected by a covered walkway. I have seen colleges smaller than the church. While inside the church I noticed that some preconceived...

World Religion Final

...World Religion Report My New Experience with the Catholic Religion I am not a religious person and never really classified myself to be any religion. Growing up however, I did attend a Christian Church with my father every so often. I also attended vacation bible school every summer at Christian Churches so if I had to pick a religion I guess it would be Christianity. I believe in Heaven and Hell and I believe in Jesus Christ and God but I never attend church anymore. It is not that I would not like to but my fiancée and her family is Catholic and that is who I live by and who I am mostly with. Also, and not making excuses it is hard for me to attend church with two young children. My intentions for this assignment were to interview my half-brother who is very religious in the Christian religion but they live too far away and both our schedules are way too hectic. So I had to hurry and change my plans for this assignment. I knew that my fiancées side of the family is all Catholic so I asked the most religious of the family, which is my fiancées Aunt Carole. To research this paper, I interviewed my fiancés Aunt Carole. I do not often see her with both of our conflicting work schedules, but took advantage of a recent visit by asking her to attend a Catholic Sunday Mass with me. We stayed on after the Mass had concluded and I was able to interview regarding her views on the Catholic religion while we sat in at St. Andrews Catholic Church, which also happens to be where...

Some of the movies would include scandals that were about priest themselves or about the church hiding some secretive group that had the power to control governments. Some of the stories that have been told, included Bishops and or Cardinals that were the true governing entities over Kings in the times of old. Some of these stories talked about demonic possessions' that only the Catholic church could exorcise. Whatever the story or movie, the Catholic church has influenced millions. It is also known that the Catholic church owns many valuable items such as, ancient texts, various artwork, a library that can not be rivaled, and arguably, loads of money. Even with the "Hollywood fame" and valuables that the Catholic church may have, the Catholic religion has been rocked by scandals and persecution. Nonetheless, the church has stood their ground and continues to strive and its followers, still hold their faith to the church as sacred as ever. For the first thousand years of Christianity there was no Roman Catholicism (Roman Catholicism, religionfacts.com). There was no other denomination at that time to distinguish Roman Catholicism from other denominations. If you were Christian, you were considered catholic. Religions of the World. Final Project

...World Religions Report By Julia Taylor Axia Colledge of University of Phoenix Many people think that Islam is a religion that based on terrorism, violence, and no rights and disrespect for women. According to the reading material, Professor of Indo-Muslim Culture, Harvard University also says: “The idea that the Muslims conquered everything with fire and sword was unfortunately deeply ingrained in the medieval mind. All these misconceptions about Islam as a religion and the legends and lies that were told about it are really unbelievable.” I was very curious about what is the true nature of Islam, and because I have been living here in Kuwait, as in point of fact, I had a chance to learn about the true Muslim culture, true believers of Islam, and I learned that Islam is not a new religion, but the original path of monotheism. I already knew what Islam’s faith is about: “There is no god but God”; that Mohammad was a prophet – God’s messenger; that Islam separates male and female, but I was surprised to learn that Islam is also about deeply Love and Passion to Allah-The Creator. According to Fisher (2005), “Islam is Arabic word which means peace, purity, acceptance and commitment. As a religion, Islam calls for complete acceptance of the teachings and guidance of God. A Muslim is one who freely and willingly accepts the supreme power of God and strives to organize his life in total accord with the teachings of God. He also works for building social institutions...

Final Project World Religions Report

...World Religions Report Antonio Smith HUM/130 April 28, 2012 David Latoundji ` The following is a review about the religion of Islam. Islam began in what is now Saudi Arabia, and like Christianity and Judaism, traces its history back to Abraham. In the Islam religion the belief is there is no god but God and Muhammad is his messenger. God or Allah is the focus of the Islamic religion. Muhammad is not worshiped in the Islam religion, but the life and death of Muhammad is regarded as very important to the religion. The sacred book in the Islam religion is the Holy Qur’an. It is stated that Muhammad received the Qur’an through a series of revelations from God. The Holy Qur’an is considered to be a book of perfection in the religion of Islam. The teachings of the Qur’an can be summarized as teachings of belief of God, prayer and worship, and performing good deeds, like helping people in need whether Muslim or not. The name of the site I visited is The Islamic Center of Lawton. It is a Mosque located on the South side of Lawton, Oklahoma, where I reside. The physical address is 913 SW F Ave. The building does not appear to be a typical place of worship. It is a building that basically looks like an average office building. When I walked in I automatically recognized the many prayer rugs on a padded section of the floor, and copies of the Qur’an and books with Arabic writing on them on bookshelves. I also noticed a picture of the Ka’bah and The Great Mosque...

...I used to play soccer for a club, just for recreational purposes,in fact i was one of the cofounders of the team. The team we assembled was a mixture of young and old, and for this reason we were the laughing stock of the league, because all other teams were made up solely of young players, who were exceptionally talented. The team ended up on the wrong side of the score for the first few games we played, and got nicknamed the “whopping boys”. Eventually we grew tired of the nickname and of our performances on the field, and we decided to try and improve things, first thing we did was to elect a leader for the club. Even though i didnʼt want the job, i was voted into the position, and as the president it was my duty to represent my team when the league called for club meetings. At the time we were all students, so it was decided that we would all contribute towards any and all expenses, but unfortunately when you dealing with a blend of young and old, things donʼt always go according to plan, people constantly made up excuses for not showing up for practice, or for not contributing towards our equipment. Even though it wasnʼt my duty, i took it upon myself to ensure that every single player showed up for practice, i used to drive up to the houses of all those who didnʼt have any transportation. It was a tiring job, but i realized that if i wanted the team to be successful, i had to make certain sacrifices, some of which included taking money out of my own pocket...

Two Students Accounting Case

...the students are Bill and John. Bill believes that the completed -contract method is most like recognizing revenue at point of delivery because in the end the final product is delivered and has fulfilled any requirements to recognize revenue. John believes that percentage-of-completion is most like point of delivery and this allows a company to recognize revenue over time. I support Bill’s opinion that the completed-contract method is closest to recognizing revenue at point of delivery. The reason I support this is because while there is still construction taking place, as in the percentage-of-completion method, there still is no actual product being delivered. Along with no product being delivered, it is possible that the final product may never actually be made. If there’s a chance the end product not being made then there is no way to recognize revenue for that product. Using the completed contract method we hold off on recognizing any revenue until the final product is finished and delivered to the client. In my opinion completed contract fulfills the requirements of revenue recognition which are (1) the amount has to be realized / realizable and (2) the revenue must be earned. In completed contract at point of delivery the item can be considered earned now that it is completed and ownership has passed to the final customer. Percentage-of-completion does help serve large contracts that take years to complete so that a company can recognize some revenue every year. The problem...
