...World Religions Report Brandy Marples HUM/130 September 4th, 2011 Timothy Albert World Religions Report Hinduism refers to the civilization if the Hindus, the inhabitants of the land of the Indus river. This term was introduced in about 1830 and it denotes the Indian civilization of about the last 2000 years by British writers. In the last century of the second millennium BC was when the Indo-European people settled in India and their religion was Vedism and Hinduism evolved from that. By incorporating all forms of worship and belief Hinduism does not necessitate the selection or elimination of any. Hinduism does not have a beginning or a founder it is both a civilization and congregation of religion, there is no central authority, hierarchy or organization. They believe in an infinite, eternal and all-embracing principal. Hinduism is one of the most sacred religions in the world. There is no other religion that compares to it. Hindus do not try to push their religion on anyone nor do they feel their religion is better than anyone else’s. They are a very nonviolent religion and do not discriminate. Hinduism has been the main religion for Indian people for centuries, so it is vital to the place it was originated in. Sikhism, Islamism and Christianity are the other religions practiced in India but Hinduism is the biggest religion practiced out there. The temple I visited was a Hindu Temple down the street from my house in Scottsdale Arizona. The actual name of the...

...Field Trip Report on The Calvary Chapel, a Christian Church Prepared for: Professor Shaw Prepared by: Julian Aguirre DeVry University Comparative Religions Field Trip Report February 15, 2013 Memorandum To: Professor Shaw (DeVry University) From: Julian Aguirre Date: February 15, 2014 RE: Field Trip Report on Calvary Chapel, Ranch Cucamonga CA! ______________________________________________________________________________ Introduction The objective of this report is to contrast and compare the culture of the Calvary Church with Catholicism, which is the religion that I practice. A field trip was taken to the Calvary Chapel in Rancho Cucamonga On February 12 of 2013, in which a clear observation of its services was performed. Though the primary belief of the religion is based on the teachings from Jesus Christ, some of its services are different than Catholicism. My overall experience was satisfying, but not convincing enough to have doubts about my own faith. There was a spiritual feeling throughout the church, but it wasn’t too fulfilling for me. The church had no architectural Christian nature, no religious symbols, but the word of God was felt. The church Realistically, as the church was approached, the building itself had no religious appeal. The exterior front looked like an entrance to a hotel, where cabs drove up to drop off and pick up people. There was no religious vibe. My first impression of the church was that it was an industrial building used...

...World Religions Report HUM/130 Vickie Burns-Sikora July 29, 2012 The religious organization we know today as Jehovah’s Witness was formed around the end of the 19th century by a group of Bible students in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. However, it was a little over sixty years before they adopted the name Jehovah’s Witness in order to separate themselves from other Christian denominations (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2006). Jehovah’s Witness is a Christian religion but differs from traditional Christianity because of their non-trinitarian beliefs. It is a monotheistic religion because they believe in and worship only one God. From their small numbers when founded, their following has constantly increased throughout the years and today they have a worldwide membership of around seven and a half million people. They teach followers to live a good moral life and to help others, no matter what the religious beliefs or racial and ethnical background of that person may be. They spread their message through their publication of the Bible journal The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom, which is published in over 190 languages and is the world’s most widely circulated religious magazine. Jehovah’s Witnesses are probably best known for going door to door to spread their message and are seen by some people as an aggravation. They are very friendly to others and anyone can attend service to see if the religion would be a good fit for their personal lifestyle...

...World Religion Report Seventh-Day Adventist Church Axia of University of Phoenix Seventh-Day Adventist falls under the denomination of Christianity. They are a faith community rooted in the beliefs described in the Holy Scriptures. They believe that Jesus is one of the three persons; The Father, The Son, and Holy Spirit called the Trinity who makes up one God. The Holy Bible describes Jesus as the Father and the Holy Spirit as each being committed to our growth as Christians and to our salvation as their children. The salvation was made possible by Jesus being born as a human baby. He lived perfectly according to God’s perfect will, died innocently for all sins, and was placed in a tomb where he then rose from the dead in three days. When I sat down to interview my source, whom asked not to be mention by name, I asked her, what is the core or main beliefs of a SDA worshipper; she replied, “they (SDA) have a set of core beliefs we live by; we believe that the Seventh Day Sabbath or Jewish Sabbath was never changed and therefore we continue to observe the Sabbath on Saturday instead of Sunday. It is observed from sundown Friday night until sundown on Saturday night. They believe just as most other Christians that Jesus will soon return and their mission in the meanwhile is to get the people prepared for this day. The SDA believe that they have the right to “Religious Freedom based on the idea of the church that those who worship Jesus on Saturdays will be...

...World Religions Report Jehovah’s Witnesses Stephen Devon Hill Jr. Axia College of the University of Phoenix January 10, 2009 In modern society there are numerous forms of Christianity. Many may be familiar with Catholics, Baptist, or Protestants. One form of Christianity that has created mixed views since its start is that of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Some thoughts that may come to mind when people think of Jehovah’s Witnesses are cult activity, unusual Christian practices, and domineering individuals. This paper will take a look at the life as a Jehovah’s Witness. The paper will cover some of the common practices and beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The paper will also try to clear up some of the misconceptions that others believe about Jehovah’s Witnesses. The author of this paper has taken the time to research the Jehovah Witness religion by visiting a local Kingdom Hall, conducting an in-person interview with an actual Jehovah Witness, and also conducting research on the internet, as well as the library. Background Information The religion of the Jehovah’s Witness began in at the end of the 19th century. The religion was started a small group of Bible students close to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Although the Christian religion is not my own I am still going to fill you in on all of the little things that make up the religion and make it the religion that it is today. I will compare and contrast the two religions of Catholic and Christianity. It will compare and contrast the differences and similarities of the two religions. The main thing that you will read about in this report is the religion of Christianity and how it came about. The main thing that you need to know about this religion is that Jesus died for the people of his religion that they can be cleansed of their sins. While you are reading this paper and you are thinking about what this religion means to you, you need to remember that not every religion is going to affect someone like it affects yourself. The thing to keep in my when you are reading this paper is that you should have an open mind about what you read so that you can take away as much information as you can from this report. The place of worship that I chose to go check out was a church that was relatively close but the place of worship in which I believed would be the best to research. The name of this place of worship that I decided to research was Revival Christian Fellowship. While this place of worship was bigger than any other place of worship that I have...

...World Religion Report Today there are over one billion members of the Catholic Church and that number grows daily. What it means to be catholic is to love Jesus completely and to follow him and his teachings. Catholics try to integrate Jesus into every aspect of their daily lives. They believe Jesus is lord, father, the son and the Holy Ghost, the Holy Trinity. They follow the Ten Commandments, Thou shalt have no other gods before me, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, Honor thy father and thy mother, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor and Thou shalt not covet. The seven sacraments, Penance, Baptism, Holy Eucharist, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders are the heart of the catholic religion. There are actually three different branches so to say of Christianity, Roman Catholic, Protestant and Eastern Orthodox. The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. They belong to Catholic churches that are known as parishes, where they go and worship no matter where their location in the world. Catholicism can be traced back to Jesus Nazareth. Its members are headed by Bishops, whose roles originated with the disciples of Jesus. (Patheos Library website, n.d.) Vatican City and Peters Basilica stands above the grave of Peter. The pope is actually...

...World Religions Report Hum 130 Saturday 4, 2012 World Religions Report When I read the Syllabus at the beginning of this course, I wondered, what religion could I chose to do this report on. I had been away from the area for so long I did not know anyone to talk to. Someone knocked on my door and asked me if I could come outside, they would like to talk to me. There stood two men who told me they were missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (AKA Mormons). I felt like a higher power sent them to me. I knew nothing about this Church, but I had heard of Mormons and what I had heard was not good. I was curious and wanted to learn more. The missionaries started talking to me about their faith and read to me from the Mormon Bible, and we had prayer that day. They asked me to do some reading in the Bible and write down any questions I had, and we would discuss them when they came back. When they came back we started with some of the history of their Church. They talked to me about Joseph Smith and asked me to keep an open mind. They explained that Joseph Smith was a prophet sent by God to restore the gospel and the priesthood to the earth. “Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph and told him not to join any of the churches, for “They were all wrong” and “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power...

...World Religions Report Kevin Scott HUM/130 July 15, 2012 Glenda B. Mitchell World Religions Report Due to the fact that, religion is in itself a very sensitive subject, when discussing the topic great care must be taken to solicit the best answers to many questions. Religion refers to what many call a way of life, where a person expresses the belief in a higher power or faith. Assessing religion helps determine the meaning of believing in a “higher power”. This report will evaluate Pentecostalism and provide an understanding of what religion means to the people of this faith. An interview was conducted with Miss Monica Hampton, who is a believer of the Pentecostal faith. Christianity is a religion that has approximately 38,000 denominations. Many of which cannot be verified, to be significant. However, the denomination known as Pentecostal is not one of those unverified denominations. Pentecostalism like other denominations believes that there is only one God. Jesus is the son of God, and he died on the cross to erase the sins of man and granted passage into Heaven on Judgment Day. This is the central belief of most if not all Christians and the denominations of Christianity. They believe in “The Trinity”, which is “The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit are one of the same. According to Apostolic Pentecostal Beliefs website, you were required to repent for your sins, be baptized with water and The Holy Spirit. To be baptized in the Holy Spirit, means you had to speak...

...Running head: WORLD RELIGIONS REPORT World Religions Report XXXXXXXX Axia College HUM 130 XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXX World Religions This paper presents research of the beliefs and practices of Roman Catholicism; describes the worship space of the church; summarizes an interview conducted with a believer; and finally, compares Roman Catholicism to Islam. The Roman Catholic Church’s origins come directly from the teachings of Jesus and his disciples, as do all denominations of Christianity. “Jesus sent his disciples into all the world, and Paul had opened the church to the Gentiles. In a sense catholic Christianity was simply a development of Jesus’ plans and Paul’s efforts”. (Shelley, 1995) When Constantine became the first Christian Roman emperor in 313 A.D., Christianity became free from persecution and later even became the official religion of the Roman Empire. This however; marked the unofficial end of the unified church as power plays and politics became as much a part of the church as the gospels themselves. In 1054, the Eastern Orthodox Church split from the unified Church over the principle of supreme authority being held by the Bishop of Rome (better known as the Pope). During this time, the Roman Catholic Church also established its own authority to teach and interpret scripture. “Individual believers are not encouraged to read the Bible and seek its meaning; instead...

...World Religions Report Beverly Ross HUM/130 Kenneth Dietz December 17, 2010 Credentials are important when you are choosing a religion. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe in the Bible as the guiding source based on worthy credentials. Their truths are based on the sacred writings of the Bible. For example Genesis 1:1 says: There is one almighty God and Creator who made all things. They believe in one creator who has a name, and that name is Jehovah. Jehovah’s Witnesses are members of a World Wide Christian Religion who share with others information about God and his son, Jesus Christ. They base their belief mainly on the principles found in the Holy Bible, and view first century Christianity as their source. Their founder is Charles Taze Russell whose background and study of the Bible led him to conclude that hellfire does not exist, God is not a Trinity, and that 1914 marked the second coming of Christ. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that all scriptures are inspired of God and beneficial, but some people have even claimed that they are not even Christians. They believe that “There is not another name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must get saved, which is Jesus Christ”. That is quoted in Acts 4:12 of the Bible. They believe that God is greater than Jesus, and that Jesus himself acknowledged that: “The Father is greater that I am,” (John 14:28) they also believe that they should be like Jesus by making God’s name...

...World Religion Report Carolyn Maynard HUM 130 December 7,2010 Byrl E. Shaver II Abstract Christianity is the largest, and one of the oldest world religions. Although it began as one, it currently has various denominations. All of these Christian groups and churches, however, adhere to the central tenets of Christianity. Christians have a distinct understanding of the nature of God, the identity of Jesus Christ, and the role of salvation. While most of the Christian holy sites are in Rome and Jerusalem, two of the earliest centers of the religion, Christian sites can be found in all countries where the religion is present. The early Christian missions, located primarily in Florida and California, are an example of important sites for the religion in the United States. This paper provides an overview of the religion, information regarding St. Augustine Mission in Florida, an interview with a Christian, and a comparison between Christianity and Islam in order to provide a deeper understanding of the Christian faith. Christianity is currently one of the world’s largest religions. Approximately 33% of the world’s population or around 2.1 billion people profess the Christian faith (Major Religions…, 2007). Who are these people? What do they believe in? Where do they come from? Where are they going? These are some of the basic questions many people, unfamiliar with Christianity, could have about the religion. Many Christian symbols, such as the cross, are well known...
