Religious Experience Church is attended my millions every Sunday around the world, and also throughout the week. Unfortunately, I have never been a part of a service until recently when I sat through a Methodists gathering two Sundays ago. I believe in god because there is really no reason not to believe in something that has not been proven wrong. The service was held inside a nice two-story building with the nicest windows you could imagine. It all started at 9 o’clock sharp that Sunday. The power you feel after entering a church is almost overwhelming, you can literally feel the powers held within the walls. When I first walked into the front doors on the church I was met by two elderly ladies giving out free small bibles, they pointed me to the basement and said everyone is downstairs. I took their advice and headed to the basement of the church where I was greeted by a old high school friend it made it a lot easier for me to be here with someone other than myself to talk to. They served breakfast to everyone that showed up to church early, they had endless amounts of food and almost any kind of breakfast you wanted they had ready to put on your plate. It was like an endless buffet this really set the right mood for me. I literally ate two full plates worth of food that morning. With out much time left before nine everyone started heading back upstairs to get their seats to start the service. After the pastor had everyone seated we started saying prayers and reading from the bible. It was very interesting speaking all together in sequence to sound as one as we repeated after the pastor. It was like one deep unified voice it was like we all came together as one that day. During the first five minutes younger boys probably ten years of age walked down the isles with what looked to be lit torches and they marches in sequence to the front of the room and lit candles around the pastor as we repeated after him. It was very intense and seemed way too real it was almost as if everything was dawning on me, honestly I didn’t know what to think about everything that was going on. As we proceeded on through the service we only listened to the pastor preach and occasionally answer or repeat what was being said. During this time I saw the pastor hand out three different baskets, one to each of the different sections. It was passed around and eventually got to the very back row where I was sitting along with about ten other people. The woven wooden basket was filled with money, I did a small good deed and put in all the spare change I had with me that day and then I passed it down the line. I sat there and thought about all the different reasons as to why the church would send around little baskets taking donations from the people that attend, and I could not think of one good reason as to why this had happened. It really didn’t make sense why they would take the money from the people that are attending the church. I remember thinking if churches need money why don’t they do little food drives or get donations other way besides taking money from the people that actually want to be there. I know that five dollars is not much to adults but for someone that work for low wages it can be hard to put any money at all in the basket as it is passed down the line. I feel as if you get judged if you do not put any money in the basket as it passes you. I guess these are the questions everyone would have that have never attended a service before. Towards the end of the service we only listened to the pastor preach to us about many different things. The same young boys that walked the isles before with the torches are headed to the front again with the same utensils just without the flame and extinguished the flames of the candles they had lit before. Shortly after the candles were put out the pastor dismissed us and we walked out the same front doors like a herd of animals heading to the same place it toke a little while to get completely out the doors of the church because there was so many people. During the service and breakfast I would say there was at least 100 people present the Sunday I was there. It was completely full in all three sections, we sat in the rows like packed sardines sitting shoulder to shoulder with people on both sides of you. It was very uncomfortable and I found it annoying that I could not move around even a little during the times I needed to without hitting or bumping into the people around me. I’m not sure if every service is like the one I attended but I definitely have considered going back to that church it seems like the right church for me if I decided I wanted tot start doing something like that on my day off every Sunday. It really was all about the windows for me this is what had me the most interested during the time I spent in the church. Every window was a little different from the next and a few had portraits of Jesus’ body and face in them, which I found very neat. There was not a window that you could see out of besides the ones on the doors of the church because the colors in the windows where very deep in color not allowing much light in or out. The only object I noticed that was used throughout the mass was that the pastor held a different colored book then the rest of us. We had standard blue bibles, while his looked to be a yellowish/gold color. Obviously it was not a different book it was just bound differently because all the pages numbers he read from matched ours. I am not sure if he has it like this to show power, or to just show the difference between himself and us. There were many meaningful symbols hanging in the church that I noticed during the time I was there. In the basement in almost every room I looked inside of with my friend had a huge portrait of the face of Jesus. It was enlightening to see just how far the church had gone to spread the word of Jesus. Even in the play room for the little kids there hung another portrait. This room was for the kids to stay while their parents went upstairs to listen to the pastor so that there isn’t any interruptions or babies crying during the mass. I found this to be a very helpful step, because I can only imagine a baby crying the entire time we are all in their paying our dues and being able to hear what is being said over the noises of the baby. I didn’t understand many things during my time in the church, for instance the money basket being sent around and the eating breakfast before the actually church started and also why you could not see out of any windows unless you were leaving the church. These all were questions I tried to find answers to but there was nothing obvious that stood out to me as to why they did this. I do believe this was the most normal service anybody could ask for, but I do not know what a normal service is like since this was my first attendance to one. I was not pressured to do anything while I as there, I actually saw many people not put money in the basket as I came around but I felt obligated to donate. Also, about half the crowd did not follow along during the songs we sang or repeating after the pastor. What the pastor said during the service all made sense to me and I could understand everything that was said. No foreign tongue was used at all during the service. The songs we sang were very short and talked about Jesus’ good doings on earth and why we praise him over anyone else. This service seemed to be earthly, but like I mentioned earlier while I was in the church it almost felt as if I was experiencing a power much greater than I had ever had before. I am not really sure how to describe the feeling but I felt like I was in the right place to ask for any kind of forgiveness. Women were not really involved with much of the service. The only women that helped where the ladies in the kitchen of the basement making food for all the people that came early and the babysitter in the basement watching after the kids as the service was going. Other than that the pastor was a man, and women along with men sat in the pews and listened. The message being passed to us was that Jesus is our ultimate savior and in his salvations we must praise him and be as much like him as possible to lead the best and most fruitful life that we can. The lesson being lectured was to clean your sins and don’t repeat the past only live for the future and never look back. During the service the pastor would ask questions to any of us in the crowd about what was going on while he would preach. The service was serious but was not taken that way people could talk back and forth and the pastor would get all of us involved with his readings. There was no right or wrong way to go about this service. Lastly, I learned many things from coming to a service for the first time ever. I got to see how people viewed god while being in church rather than shearing judging them from an outside standpoint. It really is not fair to judge religions strictly off of what you believe because everyone is different, and we ultimately have no scientific proof that this supernatural being ever existed.

...Death Death is a reality that is feared the most no matter how hard we try, we can’t escape. We are totally powerless to overcome death. The issue on the role of religion in death is relevant because living in a community surrounded by various religious beliefs means that remarkable events like this (death) can be perceived differently. The issue is controversial because most of the religions have a strong viewpoint regarding life and death and their concept differs a lot. While some religions believe that there is nothing but our life in this world. We live and we die and nothing destroys us but time, while other religions believe that the body dies and disappears, but the mind goes on - the mind has existed endlessly and continues...

...our attention to the six dimensions of religion: doctrines, rituals, myths, ethics, experience and society. These are very important elements of religion. All religions have doctrines which are at the center of their activities. The doctrines involve the codes, creeds and the cult. Again, all religions have the performance of rituals. The rituals are performed in physical terms but have spiritual implication for the believer. It is these rituals that enable man to identify with the spiritual world. Examples of such rituals include libation, prayers, sacrifice, etc. Furthermore, all religions have a mythological element that makes it difficult to explain the inexplicable. Countless stories abound in the world religions about their founders, their experiences and their concept of the spirit. There are myths that are not easy to comprehend. Again, every religion has an ethical dimension. They all emphasize on good conduct or morality. No religion encourages bad or unacceptable conduct. Believers are enjoined to live a way of life that reflects the philosophy of the religion. The codes are expected to be followed religiously by members. The day to day activities of believers and what they perceive as the interference of the spiritual is seen as the experiential dimension. Issues like miracles and healing are linked to religious experience. Most religions have these elements. Lastly, religion is society based. There can be no religion without society. ...The Influence of Religion on Society’s Daily Life By Aris Totle FOUN 1001: English Society, as it is known, is built on the basis of religious teachings. Religion has a huge impact on daily life. Almost every aspect of everyday life has been influenced by religion. Religion can be described as a system of shared beliefs. Christianity, being the most widely practiced religion in the world, especially in western territories such as the United States of America, Europe, and the Caribbean; has also been the most influential. Although many persons may not be practicing the Christian religion, their values and daily practices are still mandated by Christian beliefs. The biggest influence that Christianity has on everyday life probably is that the social norms that exist in society today are almost all based on the teachings of this religion. Social norms refer to rules that govern socially acceptable behaviour. Societal norms and practices in western civilizations are largely dictated by Christian beliefs. Religion greatly impacts the morality of individuals within these societies. Collectively as a society, and individually, persons attempt to live their lives in accordance with codes of morality and ethicality. Morals refer to an individual’s own principles regarding right and wrong. Ethics also relates to right and wrong conduct. There is a strong connection between religion and morality and ethics. Although these are distinct concepts, and morality can exist without a...

...Ashley Castle World Religions D040 April 26, 2016 Extra Credit Islam and Sikhism are basically different religions that reflect different beliefs about God. These differences reflect fundamentally different views on the nature of the relationship between God and the individual, as well as differing practices of worship. Both religions have a long tradition and followers all over the world. They share some similarities as well. Islam means “complete surrender to the trusting God” and Sikh, from the Sanskrit or Hindi word “Shishya” means disciple. These two religions have a founder that connected with god and were told to teach others about him and to be their leaders. The founder of Islam is Muhammad, which means the worthy of praise. At the age of forty, Muhammad experienced something strange, while he was meditating in a cave outside of mecca, on Mount Hira when an angle named Gabriel (jibril) appeared to him and delivered a special message from Allah, which means the God. He recited Qur’an to his people of mecca and the people started to believe that Muhammad was a prophet. Fundamental authority is the Qur’an and most emphasis is placed on the basic five pillars and all of Islam is based on the principle of mercy, and those who expect mercy from God must be merciful themselves. Islam preaches the divine presence of God or Allah in daily life. By prying regularly, they believed that Muslims can come to better understand the nature of God and partake in his divinity. The...

...Religion has been a really hot topic ever since it was established and it has been the cause of devastating battles in the entire world. Two of the most remarkable effects that organized religion has caused in society today has to do with the establishment of the laws and rules that society is govern. The other significant effect of organized religion has to be the influence in behaviors and traditions. Since the early stages of humanity religion has played a very important role in the creation of rules and guidelines for society. Religion provided the standards in which kings and rulers of the land based their laws over their subjects and maintain power for a very long time. These rules had evolved into the current laws that government had implemented into their judicial system. The example that illustrate this evolution is how the roman catholic religion influenced European and the American governments. Europeans specially the Spaniards based their laws deeply on their religion and emphasize all their efforts into converting anyone with a different ideology into christianity. This was evident during the conquer of the American continent when the native americas were rip off their believes because they were different and had to be subdued. Even after the independence from Europe laws were based on believes and gradually changed into todays rules and regulations for society. Depending of the geographical location and the respective religion of the area many societies behaved...

...Modern Religion Christianity has evolved in many ways over the centuries. When you look back from when Christianity was first discovered until now it has gone through many changes. Over time the world has become more technologically advanced and people in the world have gone through many changes as well. It is very important that churches adapt and keep up with the modern day ways of life. A few decades ago when the Christian churches wanted to go and minister to people they traveled by car or even foot and went and knocked on people’s doors. In today’s world if a church wants to minister to the community all they have to do is get online and they can reach out to millions of people at a time. The Christian churches today that are still very traditional and still do things by the book are the churches that aren’t really growing as fast. When you look at the Christian churches that have advanced technology and have made changes to accommodate the modern world those are the churches that are thriving. For example, there are Christian churches today that have applications that you can download and donate money online or even download a bible directly to your phone. In today’s world, convenience is the key. People in the modern world want things to be instant and easily available to them. That is the way that the world is and if the Christian religion is going to continue to grow then it has to move at the same speed the rest of the world is moving. As the world grows...

...I never even knew it was there, and you wouldn’t just by driving by. I pointed this out to my friend and he quickly quipped “of course not, we don’t advertise.” It was a dingy looking building with a little sign as you walked in saying Mosque and some other writing that I couldn’t understand. I was nervous and excited all at once. I love, LOVE, learning knew traditions and rituals of different people but for some reason I needed a reason to go here. With all the bad press the Muslim faith has received over the past 10 years it was hard to explain a reason for purposely putting myself in that position. My friends are not the most tolerant people when it comes to non-European faiths. Leading up to this Sabbir had to educate me in my behavior, dress, and what to expect in general. I was to wear casual attire but no shorts or anything with loud print. He said the best thing to do would be to wear something that I would wear to my church. The emphasis was on not wearing anything distracting. He also said the best thing to do would be to watch and keep silent and ask questions afterwards. You don’t talk during the prayer itself. I went to the Maghrib, or the evening prayer. It is the fourth daily prayer which is completed just after sunset. Apparently the exact time varies if you are Sunni or Shia but in these mosques they are usually performed in the Shia tradition. I had to take my shoes off before I entered and the room itself looked at first like a gymnastics studio. There were...

...Assignment 1: Report on the Religious Life of Planet Earth Sandra Graham Professor David Jividen Religion 212 November 4, 2012 Discuss the criteria you will employ to determine if people on earth are religious — in other words, what does religion look like. People such as me spend a lot of time trying to make sense of their life. I believe that everything we do is leading us to a place in our life. What is in store for them? Why did God or their God choose this path for them? In my religion we believe that we are here for a small time and these tracks we lay in life pave our way to a greater ending. Some get comfort from the certainty of death in believing that there is something greater. That is does not end with death. When you think of religion and its teachings, you are taught for example the Ten Commandments. These are guidelines that will lead us to eternal bliss. I think that many religions operate in the same way. Describe three (3) examples of behaviors or beliefs you observe that meet the criteria you established above. The first example I can think of shows belief and observance on certain days. Usually in the Christian belief they use Wednesday and Sunday church services for this time. In the Christian religion you worship on Wednesday evenings along with Sunday morning service and Sunday evening services. The main service takes place on Sunday mornings that is usually when the whole...

...individuals have been studying the different religions of the world only to find there are many obstacles in this area. Webster dictionary defined religion as “a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices. Traditions or rituals play a critical role in individual and institutional religion and can strength the bond between the individual and the sacred. Why study religion? The study of religions of the world can bring enlightenment and understanding of other religions (Molloy, 2010). It is important to understand the complications associated with studying regions of the world. Religious traditions are passed on from generations through spoken stories and experience. A good example of an oral story is some of the ritual dances and ritual clothing Native American partake in during ceremonies. As scholars study these oral traditions many details could be over looked due to a language barrier. Many written religious documents are written in spiritual language called Hagiography (Molloy, 2010). This is a spiritual language with the purpose of creating devotion to a high entity. This language can be challenging to translate and put in a document with the purpose of educating. Religious traditions are used to created devotion, bring communities together, and give hope during trying times. Many traditions include myths, stories, doctrines, and texts (Molloy, 2010). Myths tell the story of a religion. In Christianity the death and resurrection...
