...Jamie Velez Elizabeth Hughes Paul Way EDUC 268 Remember the Titans - Five Step Analysis Plot Summary In April of 1971, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling that ended all stateimposed segregation in public schools. This was the same year that T. C. Williams High School located in Alexander Virginia was integrated. This is the setting for the movie Remember the Titans, staring Denzel Washington who portrays Herman Boone the head coach of the Titans. Herman Boone is brought in as an assistant coach to join the all white coaching staff. When Herman Boone is appointed head coach over a wining white coach he is reluctant to accept because the same things had happened to him when a white coach had been appointed over him in South Carolina. He finally accepts the head coach position when he sees that the black residents see him as a symbol of pride and respect that is lacking in their community. The movie starts with a riot after a white storeowner kills a black teenager. This incident underscores the racial tensions that exist as a result of the desegregation of the high school. Coach Boone has to overcome the racism within the team, the coaching staff, and the community to build a winning racially mixed football team. Leader Description In the movie we have four primary leaders: · Herman Boone, the black head coach · Bill Yoast, the white assistant coach · Gerry Bertier, the white unofficial leader of the White athletes · Julius Campbell, the black unofficial...

...Interpersonal Conflict in Remember the Titans I choose the movie – remember the titans. It is an inspirational movie, making my blood boiling from the beginning to the end and teaching us that we are all equal no matter what race you are. It talks about not only the games, but also racial conflicts, friendship and the significance of life. The story goes like that: in the early 1970s, two schools in Alexandria Virginia integrate forming T.C. Williams High School. The Caucasian head coach of the Titans is replaced by an African American coach from North Carolina. Tensions arise when players of different races are forced together on the same football team. Many of these tensions are eased during the two-week training camp in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. When players return to Alexandria the players find the city in turmoil due to the forced desegregation of the high school. Through facing a lot of objections and questions, the players and the coaches still choose to unify, depend on and trust each other. As the season progresses the team's success causes the community to accept the changes. After the Titans' perfect season, the team and the city are closer than ever. There are many interpersonal conflicts in the movie, such as the racial conflict between the black and the white, the conflict between Coach Herman Boone and Coach Bill Yoast, the conflict between Gerry Bertier and his girlfriend Emma and so on. Because of different cultural background, conflicts arise between...

...Remember The Titans Within this organization there are two main leader who take very different approaches in there method of management. Coach Boone is the head football coach, he is very strict when it comes to his players as well as his team staff, he takes a classical approach at management. Division of labor and priorities are some main concepts used in the classical approach, Boone believe’s everyone should know where they stand and who is the boss, he is focused on building a strong winning team. Coach Boone is straight forward and to the point, in the first team meeting he informs the team that, “Best player will play, color don’t matter,” and he lets the players know, “This is not a democracy, this is a dictatorship. I am the law.” This shows Boone believe in division of labor, by matching the players skills to their position, and that he leads with bureaucracy, letting it be known clearly who is in charge. Coach Yoast is the former head coach made assistant defensive coach, who choses to lead with a behavioral approach to management. Yoast tells Boone he wants his players to hold their positions even after Boone takes over, he also tells Boone he too strict at camp and that the players should be having some fun. This shows Yoast believe’s that the players will preform better for the team if they are satisfied with the position they have, and if they are having fun while playing and practicing. Taking a behavioral approach to management, Yoast have confidence that...

...Remember the Titans Jessica Valentine SOC 318 Sociology of Sport Dr. Marnie Carroll May 18, 2015 Remember the Titans Our general public has truly and still right up 'til today managed a large number of issues that significantly separates societies, organizations, associations and all the more essentially individuals. Sports can in a flash be put in this classification when matters identified with isolation, race and ethnicity are interrelated. I have chosen the film "Remember the Titans" to examine the effects of the previously stated as they relate to sports all through this paper. In 2000, Remember the Titans was an American sports film focused upon fanciful African American football mentor Herman Boone who was depicted by super star Denzel Washington. This motion picture was not just one of the top rated and enthralling films of its year, however offered groups of onlookers a complete representation of mutual activities and leads in the lives of individuals like themselves. Using our text to break down and thoroughly describe the movie in regards to realistic conflict theory, cultural theory and racism all of which plays into the factor of sociology of sport. Prejudice is the amazing conviction that races have unmistakable attributes and inherited variables, and, likewise, certain races are better than others. The realistic conflict theory suggests that contentions between two distinct gatherings will emit as the gatherings contend over the same constrained assets...

...the injury of one of them. Even though this decision threatened his friendship with Ray, Gerry still fulfilled his responsibility. Another quality of leadership Gerry shows is open-mindedness; he connected to all of his teammates—even the black ones. In fact, he became very good friends with Julius Campbell, one of Gerry’s black teammates. Despite the racism and tension in the air, Gerry made it his duty to be positive and lead the Titans to victory. “Remember the Titans” is not only a commemoration of the breaking of racial barriers in Virginia, but also of the true meaning of leadership. Julius Campbell and Gerry Bertier, as well as many other people in this movie, prove the viewers that leadership is about being a trendsetter, standing for what you believe in, and having a positive influence. Successful leaders look for opportunities, not obstacles. Bertier in many ways is the protagonist in this movie however he probably wouldn't want to be considered above anyone or more important than any of his teammates. As one watches "Remember the Titans", Gerry Bertier stands out as a true leader and captain and embraces it throughout this movie. He gives us multiple examples of his emotional intelligence as well as his passion: Two qualities I believe every leader must possess. Bertier's passion is reflective in nearly every scene he is present, most noticeably when he is on the football field. He loves playing the game, and he loves his teammates, and he loves his...

...Gloria Bicolli Remember the Titans HRD 363 Midterm Tuckman and Jensen 1977 Tuckman and Jensen model focuses on the development of internal relations among the team members. There are 5 stages, Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Adjourning. The movie Remember the Titans was very inspiring especially because it is based on a true story. This movie showed all of Tuckman’s 5 stages. Stages of Group Development The first stage is forming; this is when members get to know one another. This is one of the most important stages. In the movie, this occurs when all of the football players are in the gym ready to meet Coach Boone. All the different race groups were together. In this interaction, the athletes have come together for the first time, they are unsure of their roles on the team, and they are also unsure what to expect from each other and the coach. Coach Boone asks Petey whether or not he likes football. The coach is very directive he tells the team “This is no democracy”. (YouTube) After they went to Gettysburg College for Camp, the coach made them sit in the same positions they had on the way to camp. This was one of his ways to form the team. The team walks to camp together, this is the first time we see them grouped whites and blacks together as a team, which signifies they have finished the forming stage. The second stage is storming; this is where all the conflicts and disagreements happen although the majority of the movie conflict occurs consistently...

...without him. Yoast reconsiders realizing the boys would lose the chance at scholarships and becomes the defense coordinator. During football camp racially motivated conflicts are handled by Boone with forceful coaxing and extreme athletic training. The boys develop racial tolerance and become a true team. Upon returning from camp, Boone is informed by a black school board member that he will be fired at the loss of a single game. The Titans slowly gain community support, while battling racial prejudice, having an undefeated season. Prior to state semi-finals, a white school board member approaches Yoast and implies he wants Boone fired because of his race, offering Hall of Fame induction if the team loses the game. Referee bias being more than apparent during the next game, Yoast confronts the head official threatening scandal exposure to the press unless the game is refereed fairly. The loss of candidacy induction for Yoast is the result of the teams win. During the towns’ victory celebration the team captain is paralyzed in a car accident. The Titans win state and return ten years later for his funeral. A conflict between interdependent parties requires the parties to be dependent upon each other. The actions whether good or bad affects all involved. This concept is expressed when in a scene between Gary and Juleus during a practice at football camp. Gary feels Juleus is not doing his part playing as a team member. Juleus expresses to Gary that he is unfair in his treatment of...

...LaQuita Taylor Submission #2 2/29/16 Corporate Social Responsibility is defined as voluntary activities undertaken by a company to operate in an economic, social, and environmentally sustainable manner. The school board’s decision to make Coach Boone the head coach over Yoast, who was the more seasoned coach, was a prime example of this. The school board was trying to please the black community by doing this. The town of Alexandria was currently in an uproar over a shop keeper shooting a young black man in his store. The school board did this because there were a lot of schools integrating but keeping the head coaches white. At the time this was an appropriate decision to make to keep the community from rioting like the really big cities. Boone handled the situation like a man. He respectfully declined at first, but with urging and acceptance from the black community he accepted the position. Before he had the first team meeting, he went to Coach Yoast and apologized for taking the position. Coach Yoast was not very accepting at first but, after camp and seeing what Boone was trying to do, he came to respect him. Even after receiving the head coach position Boone still faced problems. As the season began he was told that if he lost one game he would be fired. When Coach Yoast was approached about his Hall of Fame nomination and what he had to do in order to be inducted into the Hall of Fame he was conflicted. He had come to like Coach Boone and this caused an ethical dilemma...

...Rick James CO2520 January 13, 2014 Review of Remember the Titans Concepts of the Roles In 1971 T.C. Williams High School was newly segregated in Alexandria, VA. During these turbulent times the school certainly had its share of issues therefore all of the Roles came into play during the movie “Remember the Titans.” The Roles of Power, Culture, Social Comparison, Historical Time Period and Social Roles was involved in the growth of a town and its high school football team, the Titans. The Role of Social Comparison and Social categorization are the expectations associated with them typically arise out of our culture and our place within the cultural hierarchy. (Alberts, 2010 pp 96-97) So when school was segregated stereotypes and ethnocentrism showed its ugly head. The Role of Culture played a heavy role with not just the football team and students, but it also the way of life in the town. Everything that everyone believed in was strained. Life as everyone knew was forever changed. Along with the culture shock came the Role of Power. The head coach position was a big part of the movie. A black head coach Herman Boone (Washington) is hired to lead the school's football team. Boone takes over from the current coach Bill Yoast (Patton), nominated for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame. As a show of respect, Boone offer a coaching position to Yoast which at first he refused. Yoast eventuality reconsidered because his players had planned to boycott the school and possibly...

...This paper will apply Bruce Wayne Tuckman’s development model of group dynamics to the film “Remember the Titans”. Each of the four stages of development as defined by Tuckman will be clearly marked with a start time and a finish time (1965). Within each stage of development the team will also be rated using Hersey and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Model II (SLMII). The team will be give a developmental level based to the team’s follower readiness. Lastly both coaches style of coaching will also be rated on the SLMII. Forming The first stage of Tuckman’s model in the film occurs when the black athletes are in the gymnasium ready to meet Coach Herman Boone (11:00). In this interaction the athletes have come together for the first time, they are unsure of their roles on the team, they are unsure of what to expect from each other, and they are unsure of what to expect from their new coach, Herman Boone. The newly formed group’s tentative attitude about roles is shown when Boone questions Thomas “Petey” Jones about whether or not he likes football (11:20). The uncertainty of roles is also shown when the old head football coach William Yoast disrupts Boone’s meeting with the black athletes by entering in with the white players (13:25). Coach Yoast does not know how this confrontation between him and Coach Boone will play out. The white players in this scene are equally unsure as they come into gym. The end of this phase occurs when the team is shown walking into...

The coach goes on to explain that thousands of men died fighting the same fight the players were fighting amongst themselves that day. As the boys stand there, speechless, the viewers of the film realize that this is a pivotal point in the movie Remember the Titans.
