...“Where were the auditors?” Current Issues and Perspectives “Round Trip” revenues, “Swapping” revenues, “Vendor Financed” revenues, “Cookie Jar” reserved revenues, “Channel Stuffing” revenue, Enron’s impenetrably murky and creative accounting, WorldCom’s financial accounting shenanigans, obfuscated financial reporting practice, corporate malfeasances, the list goes on and on. Abuses in financial reporting have raised a red flag on the efficacy of the audit process and auditors’ objectivity in certifying the credibility of their clients’ earnings statements. The pervasive practice of “earnings management” is threatening the very integrity of financial reporting. Public criticism of the accounting profession, heard for some time, reached a crescendo in the aftermath of the Enron bankruptcy. “Where were the auditors?” This question has been much asked since Enron, with almost no warning, sought bankruptcy protection a mere four weeks after its announcement of the need to restate its financial statements. The follow-up question: “How could this happen to a company that had received an unqualified auditor’s opinion on its historical financial statements for so many years?” The Enron and WorldCom scandals have alerted the financial community and regulators to financial reporting abuses. Corporate governance is suddenly front-page news, forcing many corporations to restate earnings and leading to the passage of the U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act to hold corporate executives accountable...

...Trade-related Challenge: Facebook in China Loretta F. Clark University of Maryland University College Executive Summary As the world is evolving and is also becoming flat, we see how national companies are looking to expand to different regions of the world. Global expansion has a number of complexities and processes. With this expansion there are times when companies hit roadblocks. To overcome the roadblocks, companies should develop entrant strategies including acquiring assistance from their government to negotiate with foreign nations. Facebook is currently witnessing a roadblock in China. China will not allow the Internet social networking site to enter the Chinese market. This trade barrier presents Facebook with challenges; however, the company has options it may pursue to overcome the obstacles. Options include: * Pursuing a partnership with an established Chinese company * Customizing Facebook to isolate the Chinese market * Entering neighboring countries outside of China * Enlisting the assistance of government agencies * Enlisting the help of Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s) Implementing these options gives Facebook differing entrant strategies into the Chinese market. The company may reluctantly have to make some compromises and may have to weigh the cost versus the benefit for entering China. Even though cost is typically financial, Facebook will have to consider what other concessions it will have to make such as filtering content...

...A social networking service is a platform to build social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his social links, and a variety of additional services. Social networking is web-based services that allow individuals to create a public profile, to create a list of users with whom to share connection, and view and cross the connections within the system.[1] Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging.Social network sites are varied and they incorporate new information and communication tools such as, mobile connectivity, photo/video/sharing and blogging.[1] Online community services are sometimes considered as a social network service, though in a broader sense, social network service usually means an individual-centered service whereas online community services are group-centered. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, pictures, posts, activities, events, and interests with people in their network. The main types of social networking services are those that contain category places (such as former school year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages), and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with American-based...

...When beginning Tee Leaves, we had a vision but didn’t know where to begin. Through the process, we became educated on digital software like Photoshop and Illustrator. We played around with many different designs and concepts before we decided on what is now our final product. We also began coming up with creative ways to market our Namaste Tank. And from this, we learned a great deal about online marketing, particularly through Facebook and Chinese micro blog. We also saw firsthand the importance of knowing your target audience. We struggled through this a bit before really figuring out whom it is that we are targeting and how to best communicate with them. Renren—students and friends: ("on-campus network") is a Chinese social networking service that exists as the Chinese remake of Facebook. ...CIS610-Foundations of Management Information Systems Case: Netflix Leading with Data: The Emergence of Data-Driven Video Question: What advice would you give to the CEO of Netflix? Ruohua Cui, Yang Cheng, Tien-Ni Kuo, Yitian Ren Digital distribution market is undoubtedly the future of the video rental industry. Netflix has already taken a good lead in it but must have fresh ideas to keep its advantage in the industry. Beating its competitors in the domestic market is important, however, Netflix should jump out of its own circle into a new market to gain the first mover advantage. Looking at the global market, China is a good choice for Netflix’s next station. Using the Porter’s Five Forces model, Netflix can examine its advantages and disadvantages see whether entering China is good choice: * Bargaining power of customers China has a growing economy with a large group of new middle-class, who are able and willing to consume on entertainment. Nowadays, Chinese usually watch films on free websites with a low picture quality and slow Internet speed. While the number of people watching films are increasing, the picture quality is becoming more important for the viewing experience. Providing a fast, flexible and high-quality service, Netflix can persuade many customers into its subscription model. * Bargaining power of suppliers: China’s film and TV show makers have been facing a major problem: plagiarizing (including unpaid online watching), which substantially...

You should also include some thoughts on why FB would purchase WhatsApp. This is a real application of structure and process of an organization. Your posting and any responses should be posted by March 22 at 6 pm Its hard to believe but Facebook is only 11 years old and it connects more people than any other company ever has. The number of people using Facebook is staggering. They claim more than 1.2 billion with more and more signing up everyday and this is without most of China. Unfortunately for folks in main land China the government continues to block Facebook and instead they are using knock off versions of Facebook. Two of the more popular Chinese versions called QQ and Renren. Facebook has changed the way we keep in touch. First the Internet connected the world and then Facebook has made the world smaller. People use it to stay in touch with loved ones and old friends but also use it to contact with new acquaintances. Some people say that nothing is “free” but for the most part the individual user pays nothing…at least for now. It has changed the way we share our lives with others and is a unique way in which people can express themselves. In addition to expression, it also changed the way people consume information. Facebook users get up-to-date information on friends but it has also become an outlet for news, politics, sports, references, and entertainment. Since the information on Facebook goes both...

...Few people will have failed to notice the recent emergence of social media—especially much-publicized applications such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Wikipedia. Even the most casual of internet users will now be aware of the notion of social network sites and blogs, maybe even wikis and virtual worlds. Since being declared Time Magazine‘s ‘Person of the Year’ at the end of 2006, social media have come to dominate the ways in which digital technology is now used around the world. Of course, there are distinct geographical and cultural variations within this global adoption—whereas people in the USA may log on to Facebook and Twitter, Chinese users are more likely to access Renren and NetEase. Yet in all these guises, the general principles of social media remain the same. These are internet applications that rely on openly shared digital content that is authored, critiqued and re-configured by a mass of users. Social media applications therefore allow users to converse and interact with each other; to create, edit and share new forms of textual, visual and audio content; and to categorize, label and recommend existing forms of content. Perhaps the key characteristic of all these social media practices is that of ‘mass socialization’—i.e. harnessing the power of the collective actions of online user communities rather than individual users (see Shirky, 2008). The growth of social media over the past five years has transformed the ways in which the internet...

...Topic Paper: Social Media Trends In China Investigate the Microblogging—Sina Weibo Heng Zhang Digital Strategic Communication East Tennessee State University Introduction Social media channels continue to grow in popularity across China in recent years. For a country with over 1.35 billion inhabitants, using social media has become a key way for individuals and businesses to communicate. Of all the Chinese social media products to join the market in the last few years, none has had as great effects as Sina's Weibo. Sina Weibo is a Chinese microblogging website. It was launched by SINA Corporation on 14 August 2009. Similar to a hybrid of Twitter and Facebook, it is one of the most popular sites in China, with a market penetration similar to what Twitter has established in the USA. Sina Weibo presenting a relatively unfettered space for speech. In just four years, the site has attracted over 500 million members, more than the population of all but two countries in the world. For all its success, though, Weibo has confined itself to China; until 2013, when Sina introduced an English-language version and allowed users to login via Facebook, Weibo made virtually no effort to expand to foreign market and focused instead on recruiting users from within China. Given the country's large population -- and still-modest level of Internet penetration -- this strategy makes sense; however, there are still plenty of people in China who don't use Weibo. Weibo as the most...

...Taming Chinese Cyberspace -- a vision from Weibo Yicheng Zhu Reg. No. 110136970 Course: JNL 6032 Media Censorship Course leader: Dr. John Steel Abstract In this essay the recent fashion of Weibo in Chinese media is discussed, especially on the Chinese authorities and government's attitude towards it, moreover and more importantly, the way of how Weibo is being censored is explained. According to previous theories, internet cannot be regarded as a safe and free place for ideas and liberated speeches, Weibo is a good and exaggerated example as it is born in China--a nation long been considered to be less democratic. But is it really true? Was the limit of speech and media censorship really necessary? How does China want to assert them? Introduction As the 'Arab Spring' had cause enormous shake in the Middle East and north Africa, we had witnessed other great overthrows of regimes, and internet undoubtedly participated as a important role in the movement. When another civic protest took place in numerous western countries, we can also sense the huge power emanated by the social networks. The Chinese government was well aware of this, and they had foreseen the danger and unrest that these social networks could bring, 2 years earlier Twitter was officially shut sown---possibly because of the riot in Xinjiang one month before the blocking--and Weibo appeared as a Chinese replica to replace it. As theories have been...

...Information technology (IT) is a critical resource for today’s businesses. It both supports and consumes a significant amount of an organization’s resources. Just like the other three major types of business resources—people, money, and machines—it needs to be managed wisely. IT spends a significant portion of corporate budgets. ...First off, social media is mostly only accessible to Western countries. Countries such as China, North Korea, Cuba, and Turkey all have restricted access to certain websites, and banned access to others (Iosifidis, 2011; Fuchs, 2014). In China, domestic equivalents – Weibo, Baidu, Renren, Taobao, etc. – of popular social media websites such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter have been set up so that online interactions and information can be more controlled and monitored by the state (Iosifidis, 2011). There have also been, at times, concerns about censorship of social media in Western countries. After the September 11th, 2011 attacks on the United States, panic brought about the quick passing of the Patriot Act, which gave the United States government and law enforcement greater surveillance and investigation powers. Unchecked power to search through personal Internet usage and private social media accounts (without warning or need of a warrant) allowed the United States government to become a “big brother” (ACLU, 2015)...
