Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has alumni that have affected the way people live in the Hudson Valley. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, commonly known as R.P.I., has many postgraduate students that have shaped the world into what it is now. The institute was founded in 1824 in Troy, New York. Many people who have studied here have gone on to do many significant things. They offer courses in 6 major schools: Engineering, Architecture, Business, Humanities, Management, and Science. Rensselaer, located in Troy, NY, has many notable and innovative alumni that have affected not only the Hudson Valley, but the entire world. Many alumni have done impressive things once they’ve graduated in the Business, Technology, and Engineering fields. …show more content…
They make calculators, cellular handsets, and processors which are used all over the Hudson Valley. Texas Instrument’s co-founder, J. Erik Jonsson, went to R.P.I.. In an article by Texas Instruments, it states that “Erik Jonsson was a man of extraordinary talent and vision who combined a successful business career at TI with superb leadership of the diverse community of Dallas”. Erik Jonsson was such an exceptional person. He combines the skills learned at T.I., the skills learned at R.P.I, and the traits learned while being mayor of Dallas to do remarkable things. Erik Jonsson has done so much for this country. He was a mayor of Dallas and he even has a library named after him. He transformed the way we use semiconductors, calculate numbers, and use mobile phones. Another R.P.I alumnus is Sheldon Roberts. He was a pioneer in semiconductors, and a member of the traitorous eight, the eight people who started up Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley is the foundation of the world’s electronics production and research. “Favoring silicon over germanium as a semiconductor material, they left to found Fairchild Semiconductor, the first company to manufacture integrated circuits. …show more content…
WIth things like mobile phones, the Internet, and computers, technology is all around us. Rensselaer has stayed ahead of the game, as their alumni have created the greatest technological inventions ever. One notable alumnus is Ivar Giaever. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discoveries in experimental discoveries about tunnelling phenomena in superconductors. In Layman's terms, he did research on superconductors, materials that conduct electricity with zero resistance. He, after more than 60 years, is still a part of R.P.I., as he is a professor at the institute. In a post by DeSmog, a climate change site, it says “In addition to the Nobel Prize, he has been awarded the Oliver E. Buckley Prize by the American Physical Society in 1965, and the Zworykin Award by the National Academy of Engineering in 1974.” Ivar Giaever has used technology skills to his advantage. He has such impressive research, he has received some of the highest awards available. He changed the way we look at superconductors, and physics in general. This wouldn’t have been possible if he hadn’t taken technology classes as he used technology in much of his research. Another accomplished alumni is John “Maddog” Hall. He is the Executive Chairman of Linux, a computer operating system. Linux, among others, is the backbone for all computers, which are important for the world to keep spinning. In Hall’s biography, it states that “Hall

...In today's day and age, cloud storage vendors such as Amazon, microsoft etc are providing cloud services to all companies in different sectors. Flexibility, cheaper, security and reliability are the main advantages for the companies to shift their operations and storage on cloud. This migration led to the tremendous increase of big data. Data is expected to grow __ by 2020. To increase the system capacity for the humongous data, cloud services are following scale-out architecture. Scale-out architectures add more CPU, memory and connectivity hence increasing the efficiency. This practice is very expensive and in the longer run will undermine the cost effectiveness of the future data centers. However, with data increasing tremendously the computing efficiency related to data is not increasing at the same pace. Today big data analytics professionals agree that  with such rapid data growth the Moore’s law almost came to an end. Cloud data centers need an optimal computing, memory and storage architecture that can efficiently scale with the data growth and application computing demands. Most big companies offer storage products that are very expensive and old. The scale flux came up with a very unique product that can enhance the computing efficiency in the scale out architectures. ScaleFlux’s Converged Cloud Subsystem (CCS) is tightly unified software and flash-based hardware subsystem solution that easily and cost-effectively integrates into Big Data, scale-out servers. CCS collapses...

The prospect of ILinc came from Usluels work with his professor, Jack Wilson, when he worked as a programmer on multi-media projects during his time at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. ILinc was theorised as a company which would excel in the market of corporate training, but did have some noticeable shortcomings in which external help would be needed. When struggling to develop a comprehensive business plan for turning Bernstein and Usluels ideas into a profitable venture, a meeting with Mark Rice, a professor of entrepreneurship, was arranged to discuss whether or not the plan was a feasible idea and how a more organised structure could be made in for the conception of ILinc. ILinc or Secure Employment? In 1993, Mark Bernstein and Degerhan Usluel attended a career fair sponsored by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. It was at this fair that Bernstein and Usluel found that they were very much wanted by top...

A Change Recipient Perspective on Training and Competence Development During Organizational Change

...HUMAN RESOURCES Conference Paper Abstracts A CHANGE RECIPIENT PERSPECTIVE ON TRAINING AND COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT DURING ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE Olsen, Trude Hogvold; Harstad U. College; trude.olsen@hih.no Stensaker, Inger G.; NHH Norw.Schl of Economics and Business Adm.; inger.stensaker@nhh.no As organizations change and adapt to pressures in the external and internal environment, managers and employees are required to learn new competencies and skills. Ideally, new skill requirements should be identified and developed early in the change process in order to ensure that managers and employees are ready to face their new tasks and roles when the changes are implemented. However, despite good intentions at the top management level, employees and middle managers often report uncertainty and a lack of the necessary skills required to implement change. In this paper, we report from a qualitative study of two planned organizational change initiatives in the public sector. The changes involved new work tasks and managerial roles for a group of middle managers. Although the skill requirements appeared to be clear and formal training was initiated, a number of uncertain and ambiguous issues emerged among the change recipients. We examine the types of uncertainty and ambiguity that emerged and how change recipients attempted to handle these challenges. Our findings suggest that although necessary and important, formal training procedures are not adequate for resolving competence-related...

Toefl Speaking
