Replacing Windows Apps with Open Source
Virtual Library: Assignment
I think the biggest problem with replacing Windows apps with open source apps is the mindset people have when it comes to something that is “free”. A lot of people live by the saying “You get what you pay for”. In my opinion that can’t be further from the truth when it come to open source apps (let me state for the record, not all open source apps are great and wonderful). For example, I just started using a open source program called Darktable. It’s a photo management and editor program like Adobe Lightroom and Apples Apeture. It looks and for the most part behaves like those other programs, but the biggest difference is it’s FREE not $100 plus dollars. I have used those other programs and from what I can tell Darktable is in the same class.

My experience, though, short lived in the open source world has been a good one. I agree with the author on the issue of training. I know a lot of people who think they know how to use MS Word (mainly for typing letters and memo), but they don’t even scratch the surface of what that program can do. These are the people that could use programs like Google Docs, Open Office, and etc. With proper training any one of these open source apps could do the same jobs as MS Word and save you and/or your company lots of money in the long run.

Horizon Consulting Patti Smith Case Study

...iPhone ™ , Android ™ , Windows Mobile ® and BlackBerry ® platforms. Horizon was founded by James Thrasher, a former Marketing executive, who quickly saw the potential for digital marketing via smartphones. Horizon enjoyed initial success in sports marketing, but quickly expanded to other industries. A key to their success was the decline in cost for developing smartphone applications which expanded the client base. The decline in cost was primarily due to learning curve and ability to build customized solutions on established platforms. Patti Smith was a late bloomer who went back to college after working in the restaurant business for nine years. She and her former husband had tried unsuc-cessfully to operate a vegetarian restaurant in Golden, Colorado. After her di-vorce, she returned to University of Colorado where she majored in Management Information Systems with a minor in Marketing. While she enjoyed her marketing classes much more than her MIS classes, she felt the IT know- how acquired would give her an advantage in the job market. This turned out to be true as Horizon hired her to be an Account Manager soon after graduation. Patti Smith was hired to replace Stephen Stills who had started the restaurant side of the business at Horizon. Stephen was “ let go” according to one Account Manager for being a prima donna and hoarding resources. Patti’s clients ranged from high- end restaurants to hole in wall Mom and Pop shops. Xbox One

...Xbox One's exterior casing consists of a two-tone "liquid black" finish; with half finished in a matte grey, and the other in a glossier black. The matte side of the top of the console consists of a large air vent. The design was intended to evoke a more entertainment-oriented and simplified look than previous iterations of the console; among other changes, the LED rings used by Xbox 360 are replaced by a glowing white Xbox logo used to communicate the system's status to the user. Unlike the Xbox 360 console, because its "airflow and venting system was optimized for this horizontal orientation", the Xbox One was made only to sit horizontally. Internals Xbox One is powered by an AMD "Jaguar" Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) with two quad-core modules totaling eight x86-64 cores clocked at 1.75 GHz, and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM with a memory bandwidth of 68.3 GB/s.The memory subsystem also features an additional 32 MB of "embedded static" RAM, or ESRAM, with a memory bandwidth of 109 GB/s. Eurogamer has been told that for simultaneous read and write operations the ESRAM is capable of a theoretical memory bandwidth of 192 GB/s and that a memory bandwidth of 133 GB/s has been achieved with operations that involved alpha transparency blending. The system includes a non-replaceable hard drive and a Blu-ray Disc optical drive.138 GB of hard drive space is used by the operating system, with the remainder available for the storage of games. ...The R380 did support e-mail and SMS (short message service) and it also had voice memo, an organizer, and calculator software. In 2007, the release of Apple’s iPhone was the device that really brought smartphones into the mainstream. The following year, Android smartphones were released, slowly becoming the overall number one OS (operating system) in the United States. (Shinder, 2013) Shinder states, “That as smartphones gain innovative technologies and functionality, they become more complex, resulting in numerous issues and problems.” She goes on to say, “Options and features added to their operating systems make interfaces more complicated to use, which may frustrate users.” (2013) One of the biggest problems that users had about the Windows Mobile OS was that it was too complicated and difficult to use while, iPhone’s simple interface has been credited with...

...be balanced against the importance of ensuring that the business venturing into new products is potentially going to be successful. The four elements of marketing mix, price, product, place and promotion form the basis of any good market research. Using these elements will guide the company’s research and focus the question that needed to be asked. In early October 2015 Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 4 that will be thinner, lighter, faster, and with facial recognition. The Surface Pro 4 is Microsoft laptop-tablet hybrid that can be used as a Windows computer and a tablet. More interestingly, Microsoft has chosen to target companies instead of the main stream consumer users. Based on my observations I think that Microsoft should consider making a tablet directed at the consumer segment of the market for those in who are not interested in productivity but use their tablet for entertainment like watching streaming video apps like NETFLIX and Hulu. I believe that Microsoft will benefit from the growth in this segment as the Surface prod 3 did good business. Surface tablet revenues grew 117 percent to $888 million, driven by Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 that were launched in June 2014 and May 2015, respectively....

...Michael Suazo Date: 10-03-13 Windows 7 VS Linux Based on my research on Windows 7 VS Linux, I would recommend Dr. Massenat to convert his machines over to Linux. Reason one being it would be far cheaper than buying Windows 7 ISO and will not have the need to replace the machine that are currently in use. Having Linux running one the current Dell machine will provide better performance than that of Windows XP and Windows 7. The learning curve for the Linux system will vary from student to student but like all new things we all have to learn how to adapt. The GUI is far more different then your typical Windows XP or Windows 7 desktop and will require a bit more looking and searching around to find what you’re looking for to use. Now with running windows programming on Linux there may be some issues, first of all any windows only software can be used on Linux OS by using Wine or even Cross-over. Whine is a free software that allows users to install and run Microsoft only programs for free. With all free things there is still a price to pay, and that is stability to run the programs. Cross-over is another application that can be used to run windows apps but this is not a free software. Considering that some programs will run better than others and some none at all, being able to dual boot or running windows threw a virtual machine may help with stubborn...
