...Running head: FACEBOOK Facebook History and Company Overview Facebook is a social networking service and website launched in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The story began from Zuckerberg’s dormitory room in Harvard University by hacking into the Harvard’s secure computer network and copied the student’s private dormitory ID images. He called the website Facemash which attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views in its first four hours online. Later on Zuckerberg confronted dismissal from University by the administration due to the breaking of security, violating copyrights, and violating individual privacy.  Eventually, the charges were dropped and in the next semester, Zuckerberg started writing code for a new Web site called Thefacebook which inspired by Facemash (Wikipedia, n.d, PARA1-7).Immediately after Thefacebook(the primary name of Facebook) was launched in February 2004, Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra, three Harvard seniors, blamed Zuckerberg for stealing their ideas and creating his own social website while he promised them to help building a social network called HarvardConnection.com. For this reason they later filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg (Wikipedia, n.d, PARA 7). At the beginning, only Harvard students were allowed to register in Facebook but after a while in March 2004, Facebook expanded to Stanford, Columbia, and Yale. Gradually it became...

Facebook’s 8 Fundamental Hooks and 6 Basic User Types: a Psychographic Segmentation.

...Mattos, Bibianna Cha, Christina Seong, Parinaz Ejlali, and Sara Degruttola for their assistance with earlier versions of this study. Please address correspondence to David C. Evans Ph.D. at david@psychster.com . Evans et al., “Facebook Segmentation,” 37 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Understanding the different types of Facebook users is the first step to effectively communicating with them and providing appropriate features. Psychographic segmentation is a statistical procedure that first identifies the fundamental value-propositions or “hooks” of a technology, and then derives the user types who respond similarly to those hooks. Partnering with Psychster Inc., students in the University of Washington Master of Communication program in Digital Media (MCDM) applied this method to 236 Facebook users who rated the importance of 90 value-propositions via an online survey. The 6 user types that were found can be remembered by the acronym FBSIGN: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Fans join interest groups based on politics, art, and music, and they often link their Facebook account to other websites. Branders prefer public to private networking, and they often use Facebook as a tool for business, building a personal brand, or accumulating social capital. Social-Searchers employ Facebook to learn about news, media, and entertainment, but they show little interest in apps and games....

...The Facebook "phone" is a snooze fest -- at least, that's Wall Street premature take. Investors haven't batted an eye at various rumors and reports about the social network's new home on Android, which will arrive on April 4. Facebook shares opened today at an unremarkable $25.60, and have since lost around half a percent in value. The itty-bitty decline immediately follows Facebook's late Thursday announcement about an Android-related event, which led many to speculate about the potential unveiling of a long-rumored Facebook phone. The latest leak suggests Facebook will show a special social-networking home screen and mobile phone application running on an HTC handset. The software could be made available to other Android devices. But investors could care less. They are, as is typical, embracing a show, don't tell attitude. "I'm not sure that optimizing mobile for Android is all that earth shattering," Michael Pachter, managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities, told CNET. "I don't expect much of an epiphany when they host their event." Investors' tepid reaction to Facebook's improved placement on Android shows a continued disquietude with the company's ability to profit as expenses increase, as well as an overall lack of confidence in CEO Mark Zuckerberg and crew's statements about mobile being a fruitful, revenue-generating medium for Facebook. ...Facebook: A great privacy issue It is said that the opposites attract each other. However, this fact does not apply to the social media giant, Facebook. The idea of publicity and privacy do not comply with each other. There are millions of people who use Facebook to socialize with their family, friends and relatives, share photos, and connect to various events and causes and to foster their business. Currently, there are 845 million active users on Facebook and the number is constantly increasing because this social networking site enables people to socialize and serve other purpose at an ease and free of cost. However, it does cost users to share valuable and sensitive information regarding their personal lives, their contact information and so on. Facebook collects data and other information to find old friends and relatives and users also find it helpful. But not many users understand that how their personal data is being used or to what other sources is this data being distributed. Many users on Facebook are unaware of the use of privacy settings that the Facebook provides. A study shows that nearly 13 million users have never set or did not have any knowledge regarding privacy options. It means whatever data is shared by them, be it their personal information or photos that they share can be accessed by many other people apart from their friends. And the recent studies and research also show that these privacy settings are not even safe enough to keep personal data protected...
