1.0 INTRODUCTION 2.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Media is everywhere. TV, Internet, computer and video games all vie for our children's attention. Nowadays, we can easily found children as young as two years old are playing with an electronic devices and gadgets anywhere. As students head back to school with the latest tablets, laptops and smart phones in their knapsacks, some parents worry the abundance of gadgets in their children's lives could be affecting their grades and health. President of Early Childcare and Education Council (ECCE Council) Prof Datuk Dr Chiam Heng Keng said television should never be used as "babysitters" or "educational" tools. "Scientific studies by neuroscientists have shown that for 100 billion neurons (brain cells) to be wired to form neural paths, a young child needs to interact with human beings and things in their environment. In 2010, a joint study by Ohio State University and Open University of the Netherlands surveyed 219 students and found a relationship between Facebook use and negative academic performance. It found Facebook users had GPAs in the 3.0 to 3.5 range and studied one to five hours a week; non Facebook users had GPAs in the 3.5 to 4.0 range and studied 11 to 15 hours a week. Gadgets also affect health of the kids. According to the Active Healthy Kids Canada 2012 report card, 10- to 16-year-olds get an average of 6 hours and 37 minutes of daily non-class work screen time. Only 19 per cent of this age group met the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology's sedentary behavior guideline of no more than two hours of recreational screen time per day. Another study released in June 2012 in the journal Child Development followed 6,250 children from kindergarten through fifth grade and found that those who were obese scored lower on math tests than non-obese children. Dr Chiam said in Malaysia, the issue had not received the attention it deserved, especially from parents who still used television and gadgets to keep their children occupied. "Implementing guidelines on television exposure for children can be tricky in Malaysia as no research has been done on the topic." This issue has to be discussed thoroughly as it is a multi-sectoral responsibility involving the government sector as well as the social sector, especially parents.

2.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Parents who expose their children to too much television and information technology (IT) gadgets may be putting their child's mental development at risk, especially those below the age of 3. According to the sources from a survey of Kaiser Family Foundation, children are spending an average of more than 7 hours per day on the electronic device. These data show that, kids today are easily used up more than 50 hours weekly, which means the time consume is more than working hours of an adult, if we take an average of 8 hour per days for 6 working days.
Media technologies (TV, video, games, Internet, music, mobile phones) have brought about a substantial change in the experience of childhood in our society. These changes leave many parents unprepared for the challenge on how to regulate their child’s time with such technologies. There is now good evidence about the impact on children from media technologies, and this constitutes a health issue. Given the situation, it is high time that our local government takes serious effort in studying the possible dangers that may arise from this useful technology. 2.3 PURPOSES OF THE STUDY
Given the uprising number the usage of gadget among children in the country and wide variety of gadget exist, there may be a corresponding increase in the complaints about the impacts of gadgets towards children. Apart from that, there is a big chance that the number of inquiries from the public in relation to the grades of their children in accordance with the increase in the reports made by parents on the health effects.

In response to this possible national concern, the EtiQa Club of University Technology Mara (UITM) was set up recently to investigate the issue further. The purpose of the study described in this research report was to find out how kids spend their time with gadgets and how it will affect their social life and health.

2.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objectives of this study are: 1. To describe the current trends in kids attitudes and behavior in relation to the usage of gadgets. 2. To find out if there are any health related effects that kids may have experience 3. To investigate extend of knowledge and anxiety levels of the public about the impact of gadget on kid’s social life and the potential health risk. 4. To explore the current and near future of solutions to reduce the impacts of gadgets on kids.

2.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Objective 1 * To describe the current trends in kid’s attitudes and behaviors in relation to the usage of gadgets.
Research Question 1 * What are the current trends in kid’s attitudes and behaviors in relation to the usage of gadgets?
Objective 2 * To find out if there are any health related effects that kids may have experience

Objective 4 * To explore the current and near future of solutions to reduce the impacts of gadgets on kids.
Research Question 4 * What are the possible current and near future state of innovation that may serve as solutions to reduce the impacts of gadgets on kids?

2.6 SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY
In Malaysia, the issue had not received the attention it deserved, especially from parents who still used television and gadgets to keep their children occupied. The findings of this study is important to help the public to find out the impact of gadgets in Malaysia, the extent of health related symptoms that kids could have experienced and to investigate the public’s level of awareness of this problem. With this information at hand, standard safety measures could be publicized and more extensive studies could be planned for the future. 2.7 SCOPE OF STUDY
This first study, which was initiated by EtiQa Club of UiTM Shah Alam, on the issue of the impact of gadgets on kid’s social life and health, involved the participation of 30 students of Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies at UiTM Shah Alam. The respondents, which are 12 female and 18 male of students, are randomly selected by the research team themselves. The data collected via questionnaires were distributed from November 5 to November 8 this year.

...What is a report? A report ‘reports’ on something in a concise, formal way using clearly defined sections presented in a standard format, which tell the reader what you did, why and how you did it and what you found. It is the formal writing up of a practical experiment, project or research investigation. A report is written in a way which presumes that the reader knows nothing about your experiment or research. It is usually written more concisely than an essay, with headings and sub-headings and perhaps bullet-point recommendations, etc. A research report must be written in sufficient detail so that someone reading it would be able to replicate your research exactly.
