Research Assignment Part 1

1. Why Windows Server 2008 does come in different versions? What is the significance of each version?
Windows Server 2008, as well as other versions of Windows, comes in different versions for different uses. Not all users need the same thing in an Operating system. Some just want it for the basics, like printing, the internet and A DHCP server. Large companies need a fuller operating system for their servers because they are going to need a lot more out of there Operating system. There are five different versions to choose from. When you select Windows Server 2008 Standard as an Operating system. There are different reasons to choose each version you need. If you are looking for an Operating system for a Printer server or a DHCP, DNS since these operating functions do not require a lot of memory this would be a good Operating system for a Low to mid-range Server.
When you Select Windows Server 2008 Enterprise it is usually adapted for Larger Companies that are using Windows Exchange server and large SQL Server 2008 Applications. Enterprise allows you to use Failover Cluster which is a group of computer that work together when running clustered roles. Windows Server 2008 Datacenter has unlimited virtualization use rights and a hypervisor-based virtualization. This version allows you to use the most processors and RAM up to 64 processors and 2 terabytes of RAM. Windows Web Server 2008 is pretty much used for Web services al so includes Internet Information Services 7.0 and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Telnet. Windows Server 2008 Server Core is available in all versions of Windows Server. It is a CLI (Command line interface) instead of the usual GUI (Graphic User Interface. This is good because it decreases the Chance of Malicious agents are greatly decreased. The O/S is stripped down like taken the GUI out and other non-essential additives to the O/S helps with boosting processing power and decrease the strain that could be put on the RAM.

2. What are the new features or enhancements made to Windows Server 2008? How is Windows Server 2008 different from Windows Server 2003?

The differences between Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 are that 2008 has Visualization management. In Windows Server 2008, has new features and technologies these technologies help with reducing the power consumption of server and client operating systems, Which helps increase server efficiency and help lower environmental byproducts.
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 was designed with Energy Efficiency at the top of the feature list to help provide customers with Fast and convenient access to a lot of new power saving features. It includes updated support for ACPI and also PPM features, including support for processor performance states and processor idle sleep states on multiprocessor systems. Can be accessed easily across servers and clients using Group Policies.

2008 has more in-build components and updated third party drivers.
Microsoft introduces new feature with 2k8 that is Hyper-V
Windows Server 2008 introduces Hyper-V (V for Virtualization) but only on 64bit versions. More and more companies are seeing this as a way of reducing hardware costs by running several 'virtual' servers on one physical machine.

3. Why is a 64-bit architecture an advantage? The first reason and the reason most people know about and why they choose 64-bit over 32-bit is the increase in how much more memory 64-bit can handle over 32-bit. 64-bits limit on Windows Server is 1,024 of both physical and addressable memory. Another Advantage is that a 64-bit Operating system can use up 64 processors and almost linear scalability with each additional processor unlike 32-bit that can only handle 32 processors. Faster bus architecture with more and wider registers, which help with greater application speed. When there are more registers, there is less need to write data constantly to memory. Function calls are also much improved in a 64-bit environment. 64-bit is more secure because of the Buffer overflow connection, data execution protection, and patch guard.

4. Explain the new features of Windows Server 2008, such as Server Core Virtualization and PowerShell. What is the role of these features and how will they improve efficiency in administering Windows?

5. What is a Read Only Domain Controller (RODC) and what are its advantages? What are the security and administrative issues addressed by a RODC?
