...Research Critique, Part 1 Kathleen J. Good Grand Canyon University: NRS 433 October 19, 2014 Problem Statement In 2010, after the earthquake that struck Haiti, thousands of nurses and healthcare workers traveled to Haiti to volunteer to help with relief efforts. In the year and a half after the earthquake, when looking through peer-reviewed literature, it was revealed that “all of the publications are anecdotal in nature” and “there was no original research using scientific methods that systematically explore volunteers’ experiences. In addition, none of the publications specifically addressed the issues faced by nurses caring for children. This is where this study being discussed saw a gap in knowledge. “Research that focuses on the pediatric population in disasters is generally lacking” (p. 242). Worldwide, children comprise a huge population, so knowing how to care for them, especially in disaster relief, is important. “This study sought to fill part of the knowledge gap about nurse volunteers who care for children in disaster situations.” The authors of this study point out that filling this gap in knowledge is important because “it takes a scientific approach to nurses’ experiences and will help inform nurses who consider volunteering in future humanitarian missions” (p. 243). In a grander scheme, it also gives aid agencies, such as the Red Cross, more information on how to treat children post-disaster. Purpose and Research Questions Clearly stated, “The purpose...

...Queen Elizabeth I was the only English queen never to get married. It is said she may have feared marriage after her father had her mother and step-mother executed in front of her own eyes. She also may have feared childbirth since two of her stepmothers and grandmother died during childbirth. Due to her strong dislike of marriage and her lack of children, she was labelled as the “Virgin Queen”. However, shortly after becoming Queen, rumours spread of Elizabeth’s relationship with Robert Dudley, her “sweet Robin”, who was an old childhood friend. Elizabeth had made Dudley the master of the horse which basically meant he was in charge of taking care of her horses. This position guaranteed her a daily interaction with Dudley. There was also rumours...

...The Apple I Before the PC, personal computer, computers could take up whole rooms and weigh tons. But that was before the mastermind engineer Steve Wozinak built the Apple I, and the great marketer Steve Jobs. The Apple I was built on a circuit board in Steve Jobs' garage with the idea of using as few chips as possible and setting them in rows as to make the computer smaller. The greatest part about the Apple I computer was that it was incredibly adaptable and it can still be hooked up to cell phone now. The Apple I was a hit, and it is known as the first PC, but it definitely wasn't the last Apple device. The Apple I was only the beginning of a revolution that we still see in effect today. I see Apple products and devices every where I go especially school. Here at Voorhees Middle School every student is given an iPad to use and, that would not have been possible without the Apple I. Without the Apple I beginning the PC age, we could still be using computers the size of two rooms in order to learn. Apple has changed the way that we learn, and we use our iPads in class everyday in order to do homework, take notes, and study. Without Apple we would still be doing homework and notes on paper which would be a waste of paper and cost the school a good amount of money....

...Business Research: Part I Funding is an essential and key element to any business. Whether a home-based or multimillion dollar industry everything within business comes down to funding. Therefore; Lack of funding is the most common problem amongst businesses. Learning Team “A” will not only explore questions to determine the cause of the problem, but also the team will consider alternate variables to resolve this situation. Having the ability to manage a lack of funding is one of the most challenging problems for management. Purpose of Research The purpose of conducting research is for the company to determine what factors may contribute to the company’s lack of funding. Without the use of research to determine the cause, the company has perceptions and theories with no solid evidence to determine the problem and a cause for the problem. Additionally, conducting research into the problem and possible causes could lead the organization to finding solutions to combat the problem. Research Questions The management dilemma is the lack of funding available for organization. The questions that management will ask during its research are how can the management of the organization solve the lack of funding? The main research question is, what can management do to increase the funding for the organization? What can the management change in the organization’s budget to make the funding sufficient? ...Research Proposal, Part I Rodriquez Richmond Don Fairbee Courtney Westmoreland CJA/334 - RESEARCH METHODS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE JOHN FERRANTE May 2, 2013 Introduction Correctional inmates engage in drug-related and sexual risk behaviors, and the transmission of HIV, hepatitis, and sexually transmitted diseases occurs in correctional facilities. However, there is uncertainty about the extent of transmission, and hyperbolic descriptions of its extent may further stigmatize inmates and elicit punitive responses. Whether infection was acquired within or outside correctional facilities, the prevalence of HIV and other infectious diseases is much higher among inmates than among those in the general community, and the burden of disease among inmates and releases is disproportionately heavy. A comprehensive response is needed, including voluntary counseling and testing on request that is linked to high-quality treatment, disease prevention education, substance abuse treatment, and discharge planning and transitional programs for releases. General area being studied Sexual activity among inmates is a complex phenomenon that occurs along a continuum, from the entirely consensual to the violently coerced. The New York Times detailed a gang-run system of sexual slavery in a Texas prison, where at least 1 gay inmate claimed he was bought and sold numerous...

...Running head: Business Research Methods I Business Research Methods I Aaron L. Richards, Bill Houston, Christi Lawson, Jeff Smith QNT/TM561 – Research and Statistics for Process Control Dr. Joseph Hamel University of Phoenix June 13, 2011 Abstract Insert Abstract Text Here. Business Research Methods I Introduction Riordan Manufacturing is an industry leading plastic manufacture with facilities located in both North America and China. Riordan has struggled to meet their effectiveness standards for multiple categories and they are looking to implement one of three quality improvement methods to improve process efficiency. If Riordan is to maintain an industry leader, changes must occur in processes across the board in relation to accuracy, availability, quality, timeliness, and cost. However, the first effectiveness measure to be looked at should be the receiving of raw materials from suppliers since every other process thereafter deals with inventory. In addition, the formulation of a solution involves certain steps be taken. Firstly, a process-driven research question should be formulated defining the initial problem. Secondly, a methodology such as Six Sigma, ISO, or Baldridge must be chosen to improve the process. Thirdly, a research design should be created to define any and all variables involved in the solution, and fourthly a sample design should be identified for the collection of data. Process & Methodology In any process improvement...

...If someone asks you what is love, how would you answer the question? In the past, I would simply say: "I don't know." I am not into such sentimental business. Naturally, expressing emotion is not my specialty and I tend to dodge it. My mom usually brings up the event in which she asked me the classic question of "who do you love more, mom or dad?" I, merely three years old, gave the astonishing answer: "I love myself more!" Although I don't really remember it, I know this answer could only come from me and I am proud of it. This is who I am, and I won't answer such sentimental, stupid question. Consequently, I am a cool person as I grow up. Despite of my lack of amiability, people generally admire me for my unique personality and sharp wit. I enjoyed it at first, but later I realized I am not really happy. Since I am not willing to share my thoughts with anyone, no one really understands me. There is no one I can truly talk to when I have trouble. I found I have lost the basic, common joy of being a human....

...I believe in forgiveness. I feel that it has a very strong impact on people. It can be good because it allows people to make up and move on. That might be the case and it might not be, it all depends on the person and what act they would be forgiving. I think that forgiveness can change people for the better. I feel that forgiving someone could, bring the sense of trust back between the people. What I mean by this is a friend might have done something with you and blamed it on you to cover themselves. And once you forgive them you can trust them again. Some might say that you can trust them again yes but be cautious. Also it is the right thing to do. We all have had some incidents were we forgave someone or someone forgave you for something...

A research question, which is more specific and focused than a general topic, is the question that your research paper will answer. For example, if your general area of interest is social security, a possible research question might ask, “How can low-income families save more money if the United States had a reformed social security plan that includes personal retirement accounts?” As you develop a research question, remember that you need to research sources to support your topic. Do not pick a one-sided question that will limit your research. Instead, develop a research question that lends itself to further exploration and debate—a question you genuinely want to know the answer to. Try to pick a research question that is neither too broad (covering too much) or too narrow (covering too little). It should be broad enough to be discussed in a short research paper. ...Current Events in Business Research RES/351 July 28, 2014 Annette West Current Events in Business Research For the purpose of this assignment I ended up going in two totally different directions. Initially I wanted to research “burn out” on the job as I personally feel it and I personally see it every day at work, but in the end I decided to research on a second issue at my place of employment and that is “working off the clock”. I began working for my current employer, the federal government, in 2009. Since that time I have noticed the common practice of the expectation of my fellow workers and myself, without specifically being asked, to perform our duties and not report our time that was in excess of eight hours per day. Most recently I was asked by our local Union to become a Union Stewart and since accepting that position I wanted to research as to why this is normal practice and how we can go about correcting this issue. In researching the University’s Electronic Reserve Readings I have decided to use a paper labeled “Working off the Clock and Its Impact.” To begin with I believe it is common knowledge that it is against federal law to allow any employee to work outside of their normal working hours without compensation. According to the Department of Labor’s (DOL) website “the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) prescribes standards for wages and overtime pay, which affect most private and public employment. The act is administered by the Wage and Hour Division....
