The Mission to Mars project is a huge exploration venture for man-kind and can possibly cause a paradigm shift in our world as we know it today. ...“In most societies, formal schooling is an important institution for transmitting knowledge and culture from generation to generation and for developing human traits that contribute to human output, social stability, and the production of new knowledge” (Carnoy, Education as Cultural Imperialism, p.1). Ultimately the word “education” would mean for one to be enlightened and obtain knowledge through learning. However, the kind of education received within the United States Prison Systems is actively doing the opposite. The oppressed inmate populations are ultimately being exploited for cheap labor in order to support a capitalist society that they do not benefit from. This paper will argue that the education being withheld from prison inmates is both cultural and educational imperialism. This paper will also argue that the Prison Industrial Complex is intentionally exploiting inmates to contribute to a capitalist labor market instead of receiving education they are entitled to in order to be rehabilitated, reduce recidivism, improve their lives and ultimately better benefit society. Incarceration in the United States is the main form of punishment, rehabilitation, or both as a consequence of felony and other criminal offenses. Introduction Chamorro elders often speak about the abundance of freshwater when they were growing up. They established personal relationships with these waters and gave them Chamorro names. Uncle Ben from Songsong Village, Rota recalled one particular spring, which he called “Agaton.” According to Uncle Ben, “Agaton” came from Bobo Mames. Bobo in Chamorro means, “spring” and Mames means, “sweet.” Thus, Agaton refers to the “Sweet Spring.” Uncle Ben recalled that Agaton would flow directly behind his house, which fed the marshland in his parent’s backyard. He reminisced about how he and his younger brothers would often go to the marshland at night to pick Ayuyu (Coconut Crab). He then lamented, “Oh, how I miss those days.” Uncle Ben also shared that in the early 1940s almost everyone dug wells. He noted that his father and mother would walk several miles to Songsong Village to fetch pails of water from a dug-up well that had supplied the entire village before European contact, as well as during the Spanish, German, and Japanese occupations. It was an endeavor that all of humanity was invested in at the time. It was a testament to the power of the human spirit and it showed how nothing was impossible if we persevered and strived to be better. The space race did not start as one would expect with the respective American and Soviet space agencies. But rather it began with the German V2 missile launches towards the end of World War 2. The V2 missile was designed by Wernher Von Braun a German scientist who had dreamed of traveling to the moon for many years; however this dream had to be secret as it was considered to be treasonous and not helpful to the German cause. Von Braun and many other amateur rocketeers were drafted into the German war machine in order to help build a super weapon and their base was Peenemünde. When the war was nearing its end the Third Reich unleashed its secret weapon, the V2 missile. It could hit anywhere within its target range and there would be no warning. First, the conditions of the American literary marketplace are briefly described. Second, documents pertaining to the realization in print of Villa’s stories and his book are analyzed as sites of negotiations between colonial subject (Villa) and the colonial master (his American editors and publishers). Finally, an account of how Villa was made to circulate in the Philippines after the publication of his stories and his book in the United States is given. From these discussions the article hopes to show that Villa’s self-fashioning by publication was both subject to and critical of the colonial condition, alternately reinforcing it and challenging it.
