Human Trafficking: A Hidden Disease. Human trafficking has never been widely acknowledged in the United States, as many view the issue as an international problem. Human trafficking comes in two ways, international and domestic. International trafficking can be forced child labor or prostitution, whereas domestic is, for the most part, child prostitution (Levy). Close to twenty-seven million people are trafficked in the world, around 14,500 are brought to the United States from other countries (Buffett 116). Meanwhile, many children living in America are taken off the street and forced to become something most people could hardly comprehend. Journalists have found that the citizens of the United States are starting to realize the magnitude of human trafficking in the country, and are doing their best to shed light on this fact. In Maine, a task force was formed as a way to combat human trafficking, or “Modern Slavey.” Many of the officers were unaware of human trafficking happening in their home state, likely because a case has never been investigated or prosecuted in their area (Ordway). Human trafficking has become a large problem in Charlotte, North Carolina. Emily Fitchpatrick is the founder of “On Eagles Wings Ministries,” a group dedicated to helping victims of modern-day slavery. This group believes in saving the people affected by human trafficking they must show the victims that they are worth saving (Orlando). More than sixty human trafficking victims were found in 2004, in Long Island. The residents were astounded, for two-year people were kept locked up and the rest of the world was left unaware of this travesty.
