Learning Through Literature: “The Necklace”
At a young age, reading was a struggle that many parents had to force their children to do, every single day. Although reading is becoming less and less popular, because of new technologies, it is still very effective and useful. As the world develops and humans begin to find other ways to get information on a culture and on the meaning of individuality, reading still proves itself the best way to learn these things. The story, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, proves that literature is the most effective way to provide readers with the best insight into French culture and the meaning of individuality through Mathilde’s journey in France.
Mathilde Loisel, a French woman who dreams of riches, goes …show more content…
The story gives the reader an inside scoop on all three social classes, the lower class, the middle class, and the upper class. Mathilde and her husband, begin in the middle class. Monsieur Loisel is happy with his status, but Mathilde is not. She strives to be in the highest class and tries to make herself appear richer than she is. She thinks that being rich is everything and is needed to be happy in life. When Mathilde gets the invitation to the ball she quickly goes to her friend in the highest class, Madame Forestier. She begs to borrow a beautiful necklace that belongs to Madame Forestier to go along with the dress that Mathilde just bought for 400 Francs, with her husbands spending money. Madame Forestier and the other women at the ball are examples of the upper class in France, while Mathilde is from the middle class. At the end of the story, Mathilde and her husband end up in the lowest class, lower than where they started, and are forced to work long hours to pay off a big debt. The story allows the reader to get a different outlook on the different social classes in France, and what it is like to be in them. In the end, Madame Loisel is struck with the reality of her lower class life which becomes worse after she must pay off a big debt for losing the necklace she …show more content…
After losing the necklace she borrowed from her friend in the highest class, Madame Loisel finally begins to learn that being rich is not the most important thing in the world because it comes with huge responsibilities and burdens. Loisel works for 10 years to pay off the replacement necklace. During this time she becomes to realize the heavy loads of work around the house such as cleaning and cooking. Reading this story provides the audience with a clear and concise example of being an individual and striving for more than what you actually are. This is a lesson that is best described in reading because the reader gets to experience the character’s choices, in this case Mathilde, and make their own interpretations on the story, unlike social media that is already created to interpret in a specific

Ritual of Mardi Gras

...Research and Background The Nacirema tribe and their strange behaviors were first documented by Horace Miner in “The Body Ritual Among the Nacirema” in 1956. Considerable effort has been extended to the study of this most unusual tribe in the years that followed and many print articles and lectures were devoted to trying to understand these people and their strange customs. Recently, many new research techniques combined with a host of motivated anthropologists and a fresh source of both corporate donations and governmental funds have uncovered new information about the Nacirema. Although there are hundreds or perhaps thousands of Nacirema rituals, ceremonies, and practices that merit intense study and analysis, the focus of this research paper is perhaps one of the most bizarre and poorly understood of all their rituals. This ritual has it’s roots in many different cultures dispersed across the world dating back hundreds of years. This most interesting ritual has been celebrated in a very concentrated region of Nacirema for hundreds of years located in a few costal cities north of the body of water “Gulf of the Land of Maize”. Although this ritual is celebrated to some degree in selected Nacirema cities of this region, the epicenter of this ritual and it’s many strange customs is the city that straddles the end of the big river Ojibwe. This city is “Crescent City”, aptly named for the villages of the city that followed the curvature of the big river Ojibwe. Once per...

...how you will utilize the academic programs to further explore your interests, intended major, or field of study. “Look, Mommy, the sun is playing peekaboo with the clouds,” I told my mother, squeezing her hand and squinting at the temperamental sky. It was my first metaphor, although I was unaware of it at the time; I was three years old. Even before I could read, I harbored a natural affinity for the English language, picking up new words easily and using them in unexpected ways. I would string them together like beads on a necklace, carefully selecting and rearranging them for the most ear-pleasing sentence. For me, words were more than a way to communicate - they were a form of art. As I delved into the written word I began to recognize writing as a powerful tool for expression. I turned to poetry and short stories to capture childhood moments, expanding my vocabulary and becoming skilled at transferring raw emotions and ideas onto paper. My parents encouraged me to make frequent trips to the library, and I often staggered home beneath the weight of a pile of novels. When I entered high school as a published author and poet, my writing continued to mature. Although I still marveled at the versatility of language, I now wielded my pen with a more defined sense of purpose. I understood that words could be used for more than the aesthetic appeal that got me through my English essays. They could be used to educate, to inform, and to spread awareness. By junior year...

From its initial launch at a Christmas bazaar, the small business has come far, branching out all around the metro. Despite its initial success and the rising demand for silver, Silver Box’s sales have declined. The company needs to have a clearer vision of what target market it is capable of achieving. Global Warming Cause: Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning power plants Our ever increasing addiction to electricity from coal burning power plants releases enormous amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. 40% of U.S. CO2 emissions come from electricity production, and burning coal accounts for 93% of emissions from the electric utility industry [EPA, pg. 10]. ...Computer and Information Sciences Sta. Mesa, Manila Pawnshop Management System Prepared by: Abaya, Russel Jan Acula, John Lester Gabelo, Jerry Paming, Krissel Silvela, Mariz Chapter I: Abstract/Overview A. Project Definition/Introduction A pawnshop is a business entity that lends money to pledgers based on the value of a collateral item. The item’s value will increase due to interest and the pledger will be given a due date. If the pledger haven’t successfully returned the money within the period of time that was agreed upon during pawning, the collateral item will be unredeemed and will be available for sale. Most pawnshop companies make use of manual forms during the pawning process, which leads to bulky paper works and poor organization of records. The clerk or pawn broker is also forced to deal with manual, time-consuming computations for item assessment, contract details, sales, and reports. The manual process often causes inaccuracy in terms of interest and payment in which computations adapt to different company policies. The proposed project will address the following problems encountered by such companies that practice the manual pawnshop system: * Inaccurate assessment of pawned item * Miscalculation of interest, due date and periodic payment for pawn transactions * Difficulty in monitoring payments * Time-consuming searching of records * Facilitates too much manpower * Inconsistent implementation of company...

The Kumeyaay People of California

...Steven R. James Nov. 10, 2014 INTRODUCTION In my quest to study the life of the ancient California inhabitants, I visited the San Diego Museum of Man which is an anthropological museum situated in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. The museum was established in the year 1915 as a result of the Panama-California Exposition where several exhibits were displayed with ‘The Story of Man through Ages’ being the first. At the culmination of the exposition, San Diego Museum Association sought to retain the available collection and start a permanent museum. As a result, the collection was named Museum of Man in 1942 and later in 1978 as the California Museum of Man. Besides housing the history of the Kumeyaay people, who are the subject of this research paper, the history of other Native Americans from the South of California can also be studied in this place. The museum has a population of over 100000 ethnographic items, 25000 images, and a large library of books and journals. MUSEUM EXHIBIT 1) Artifact Display On the second floor of the museum, a wide variety of the historic sources can be found. Among the displayed artifacts there are models of the early man, reconstructions of the bones of hominids, cave paintings, coffins of mummies from ancient Egypt, stone carvings, and remains of the Egyptian mummy known as Lemon Grove. The culture of the people of China, Egypt and the Kumeyaay people are dominant. Their traditions and way of life are represented by the paintings, jewelry, pottery...

It is a step forward from the cumbersome technique called the zinc finger nucleases and Talens. The Crispr-Cas 9 was invented at the University of California, Berkeley and reported very little in the papers about four years ago. Today, the technique is spreading quickly across the world. The discovery of such technique was such a momentous event that Science, a journal, named it “the breakthrough of the year.” With this tool, scientists have better access to understand how the genes and cells in our body work. It helps to open the doors to research that would have been too expensive to do without this new editing technique. Crispr-Cas...

As healthcare providers we are faced with trying to understand all the different cultures we encounter on a daily basis in a hospital setting. There are many different faiths, some are well known such as Christianity and some are not quite so known such as Hinduism. Different faiths have different rules and regulations that they follow. Knowing all the intricate ins and outs of every religion is going to be impossible, but that should not stop someone from trying to learn all they can regarding the patients they are caring for. Objective 3. Limitations 4. Research Methodology 5. Introduction: As India makes rapid progress in the retail arena, the Indian Jewellery market is undergoing a gradual metamorphosis from unorganized to organized formats. The jewellery business in India is estimated to beat Rs. 50,000 crores. According to the independent estimation studies conducted by World Gold Council & Mckinsey, out of the overall market share, the share of organized jewellery market is less than Rs. 1,000 crores. This accounts to about 2-3% of the total market share. But given that this is a relatively new segment of the market, it is poised to grow. Jewellery retailing is moving from a “Storehouse of value” to a “Precious fashion accessory”. Plain gold is gradually easing its stranglehold on the Indian consumer psyche to give way to diamonds, platinum and colored gemstones. The way jewellery was worn before is undergoing a tremendous change. Traditional designs are yielding to modern jewellery...

Origami Owl

...Origami Owl; a Customizable Locket Line Author: Silky Rosales MGT 450: Strategic Planning for Organizations Instructor: Charles Jarrell Date: August 30, 2013 Most recently I was talked into joining Origami Owl. I learned about the company through a coworker who invited me to a “Jewelry Bar” in her home. Origami Owl is a line of fashionable and meaningful jewelry that is unique to each customer who creates it. Currently, there are over 40, 000 Independent Designers and the company started only two years ago. My reason for joining was really to just start a collection of my own at a discounted price. The party was quite fun, it was relaxed and everyone was very welcoming to me. After sitting through the presentation and watching the women just fall in love with the pieces, I thought to myself how easy the money was to be made. The company was founded in October 2010 by a then 14 year old who wanted to buy a car when she turned 16. Bella’s parents made a deal with her. If she wanted to create a business and earn the money, they would match her investment. With $350 in babysitting earnings and the $350 matched by her parents, she invested in some clear lockets. Bella hoped to earn enough to buy an old truck-$3,000 to $6,000 but, it became apparent that she could earn so much more with her new business. She decided that selling customizable jewelry to her friends and family was how she was going to earn the money and found that it was a hot commodity. Bella’s in home,...
