1. How would you characterize the MySQL vs MariaDB problem? What were the key reasons for MariaDB's creation? Do you foresee this becoming the norm (corporate-community forks) or is this simply a set of really disagreeable personalities? Truly Open Source because all code in MariaDB is released under GPL, LPGL or BSD. MariaDB does not have closed source modules like the ones that can be found in MySQL Enterprise Edition. In fact, all the closed source features in MySQL 5.5 Enterprise Edition are found in the MariaDB open source version. MariaDB includes test cases for all fixed bugs. Oracle doesn't provide test cases for new bugs fixed in MySQL 5.5. All bugs and development plans are public. MariaDB is developed by the community in true open source spirit. MariaDB has a lot of new options, extension, storage engines and bug fixes that are not in MySQL. 2. How does GPL version 3 differ from GPL version 2? There are many differences between the two versions of the GNU Public License, but it’s important to note that GPLv3 serves as an alternative, rather than a replacement of GPLv2. The reason for this is that the two licenses are incompatible, and there is no legal way to combine any code that uses the GPLv2 with any code that will be used under the GPLv3. One of the common issues facing those who utilize GPLv2 software is the uncertainty as to whether other code that is used or distributed in conjunction with GPLv2 Code would be subject to the terms of the GPLv2, including the obligation to make the source code available under the terms of the GPLv2. Prior to the GPLv3, the open source community commonly made a distinction between software that was dynamically linked and software that was statically linked to GPL-governed code, with many presuming that dynamically linked code was a separate program that would not be governed by the GPLv2. The GPLv3 sheds some new light as to the scope of software that is subject to the GPLv3, but does not provide complete clarity on this issue. The GPLv3 requires that a work that copies or adapts "all or part of" the GPLv3 Code and that would require "copyright permission" would be subject to the terms of the GPLv3. In describing the source code that must be made available under the GPLv3, Section 1 of the GPLv3 includes a requirement that "the source code for shared libraries and dynamically linked subprograms that the work is specifically designed to require" must also be made available in source code form under the terms of the GPLv3. Accordingly, under the GPLv3, one needs to conduct an analysis based on the facts and circumstances in determining which code that is used and conveyed with GPLv3 Code is subject to the terms of the GPLv3, and should not rely merely on the distinction between dynamically link linking and statically linking in making this determination. 3. How is "commercial FOSS" different from "commercial proprietary software"? What kinds of editions do software companies like Alfresco and SugarCRM offer? What license do these products use on the FOSS edition, and how do you think they generate revenue? Commercial FOSS - freedom to run the program for any purpose also, how the program works as well as modify it. Freedom to redistribute modified copies to others to help the community benefits. All these freedoms are preconditions to access the source codes. Commercial proprietary software - companies incorporate both open source and IP protected code into the final proprietary software they release to the market. Alfresco offers a business model similar to SugarCRM in that it uses a community edition (open source) as a loss leader. The primary difference being that the company uses a subscription based model, because the software deployment is over the cloud as SaaS. Alfresco uses LGPL which allows them to distribute their software without the need to release the code. SugarCRM adopted the GPLv3 license in 2007, which means the code is available to anyone. The Sugar application is available in five different editions, each with additional functionality. Sugar Community Edition is the base level edition, with Sugar Professional, Sugar Corporate, Sugar Enterprise, and Sugar Ultimate, each adding more capabilities. SugarCRM licenses Sugar Community Edition under the Affero GNU Public License version 3. Sugar Professional and Sugar Enterprise are licensed under a commercial SugarCRM license. Base on five different editions from Sugar Official website, it has different price for that. Start bottom up the Sugar Community Edition is free, Sugar professional is $35 per month, Sugar corporate in $45 per month, Sugar enterprise is $60 per month, and last one Sugar ultimate is $150 per month. 4. What kind of an impact will FOSS have on the enterprise? Will it lead to an improvement of operations, help make better decisions, provide a competitive advantage for strategic use of IT? For this question, think of the pyramid model that you have come across in ISYS 363 * Lower cost of ownership: The lower cost ownership is one of the main reasons for enterprises to adopt Free Software. * Better performance: All too often, commercial software strives to create unnecessary complexity in software products in order to generate revenue. * Better quality: More people are involved in reviewing FOSS source code than proprietary software. * Decreased management workload: The software source code is publicly available and managers have the opportunity to integrate the software to support company needs. * Good support systems: Since FOSS development involves a community of programmers and computer experts, the situation allows the FOSS user to experience rapid implementation of new features and security fixes * Unlimited upgrades: Commercial software sometimes does not share its code, and therefore, upgrades are not possible.
Concerns Regarding the Use of Open Source Technology in Business * Poor Code: From the business perspective, FOSS may involve issues and risks for Program Managers. * Lack of vendors: About sixty-five percent of commercial software users stated their preference of commercial advantages over open source because of the lack of vendor professional services (Asay, 2008). * Complex legal restrictions: According to Koohgoli, the CEO of Protecode, the issue is not about the use of open source, but with the unmanaged copyright and licensing issue (Pearlman, 2009). * Availability of new features: Since the open source community is based on volunteerism, new features for software cannot be expected. * Difficult initial adoption: Commercial software might be costly, but the systems are easier to adopt.
Business Implications * Software industry implications: FOSS has had financial impacts on commercial (proprietary software providers). * Security and reliability: Whether free software is used within a business or by individual consumers, the software needs to be both secure and reliable. In addition, the use of open source can provide companies with different perspectives because open source inspires innovative thinking. I say this because the fundamentals, motivation, and ideals behind open source can be translated into possible competitive advantages.

College is something many people try to tackle in their lifetime and also a fear many people never tackle during their life. One of those comments being that the national average drop rate for the course was a 60%. During my first night in class we were informed that our first paper would be a website evaluation.
