PSY 325: Statistics for the Behavioral & Social Sciences

October 1, 2012

Research Study Analysis Researchers gather data in order to conduct studies that assist in the behavioral and social sciences. The analysis of this data can determine tendencies among populations, the best course of treatment for common social diseases, such as drug or alcohol addiction, or the reasons behind behavior among certain populations.
Introduction
A number of studies have been conducted in order to provide members of the medical and psychological community with information to determine the best course of treatment for patients with alcohol addiction. These studies take into account other factors, such as personality disorders, chronic diseases, and also address the use of medication and psychological treatment. The first study entitled, Personality Disorders Among Alcoholic Outpatients: Prevalence and Course in Treatment, attempts to determine the prevalence of personality disorders among men and women seeking outpatient treatment for alcoholism. The hypothesis is that if there is a personality disorder present, it should help determine the type of treatment an alcoholic receives. The treatment chosen should be tailored to the patient’s comorbid personality disorder, or lack thereof. The second study entitled, Chronic disease and recent addiction treatment utilization among alcohol and drug dependent adults, “the objective of this paper is to evaluate the association between the presence of chronic medical disease and recent addiction treatment utilization among adults with substance dependence.” (Reif, Larson, Cheng, et al., 2011) The hypothesis that is being studied is whether the presence of a chronic disease will effect an individual’s decision to seek treatment for an addiction. The third study entitled, What Works for

These tasks were not assessed, but will be of great help to you for your assessed work in teaching block two. Throughout teaching block two you are required to undertake an individual research project, focussing on one space from the list attached. You will present this research in the form of a research journal (artefact one). Each studio has been allocated a ‘type’ of space, either domestic, sacred or public and you can choose your individual space from within this list. In studios, you will break into groups to compare and contrast your spaces, come to some conclusions about each ‘type’ based on this comparative analysis, and present your findings in the form of an exhibition (artefact two). Each group will consist of 6-7 students. Marking of the work will be based on a combination of your...

How Would You Justify Spending Time and Money on a Business Analysis of Your Company? Can Such an Exercise Really Pay Off in Ways That Make It Worth the Effort?

...Module: Business Analysis and Assessment Week: 06 Discussion Question Name: Sahr Dauda Date: 18 July 2012 Question: How would you justify spending time and money on a business analysis of your company? Can such an exercise really pay off in ways that make it worth the effort? Analysis, as summed up from my readings, can be regarded as a clinical and structured decomposition of a subject into its constituent parts with the aim of acquiring salient information and deeper understanding of the said subject and to offer robust solutions for improvements. It is thus a process that is inherently iterative and involves, as proffered by Williamson et al., (2004), lots of research to gain deeper insight into the business which encompasses all aspects of the business and its environment. In short, it is a holistic process that unearths the secrets of the business and identifies areas needing attention. It thus seeks to find answers to questions like where is the business now, what does it do and how does it do it, where does it want to go and how can this be achieved (Williamson et al., 2004). Yes, it consumes time and money but insights so garnered from the analytical process leading to formation of strategies will give the business a favourable competitive position and superior profitability. To reduce time and money spent, analytical tools are used to aid in the process, besides bringing structure to it. Note here that only the right necessary tools are used, as a few too...

Global Market Research Case Study Analysis

...Global Market Research Case Study Analysis The situation discussed in the case tells of an opportunity afforded Sperry/MacLennan Architects and Planners; the Canadian company was founded in 1972 as a one-man architectural practice and years since then they have become a very respected and profitable company in the field of architecture. It has been recorded in text that Aaker, Kumar & Day (2007) stated, “Eight market niches were identified for Canadian architects in the United States, one of which was educational facilities, in particular post-secondary institutions. This niche, identified as most likely to match S/M’s capabilities, is controlled by state governments and private organizations. Mitch Brooks, a junior partner in the firm, has plans to identify and evaluate other possible markets for S/M’s services as part of his October presentation to the board. Other parts of the United States, or the affluent countries of Europe, where recreational facilities are regularly patronized and design is taken seriously, might provide a better export market, given S/M’s string of design successes at home and the international recognition afforded by the Amherst facility design award.” (Chapter 3). Fortunately for S/M, things began to take a turn in the right direction when their persistence and faith was rewarded in 1983. Sperry won the competition for the aquatics facility for the Canada Games in Saint John. Sperry had gained renowned nationwide acknowledgment for its sports facility...

Marketing Research: an Analysis of Three Case Studies

...INTRODUCTION An appropriate sample and correct methodology is necessary when conducting a research in marketing. To reach the desired sample, sampling size must be chosen carefully in order to avoid bias and increase the accuracy of data. To investigate this, we have a statement on size, “the larger the sample the greater the precision and reliability” (Chisnall, P. 2005, p99) and one on the sampling technique “Accuracy of relative techniques often refers to the correct identification of the target species and correct enumeration of the target species in each sample unit.” (Fleischer, S.J. and Allan,1980), which are to be proven correct from the conclusion of 3 articles that were analyzed. Looking at the sampling techniques used in the each article and their sampling size, the ideal number of sampling techniques for a research as well as the number of participants will be determined [ OR An appropriate sample and correct methodology is necessary when conducting a research in marketing. Compare and Contrast How Content Analysis and Ethnographic Research Have Been Used to Study Children’s Understanding of Friendship.

...perceived by children. This essay is to provide the likenesses and differences between two studies which investigated this subject. The first study which will be discussed was accomplished by Brian Bigelow and John La Gaipa in which they used the content analysis approach. The second study to be considered was completed by William Corsaro in which the ethnographic method was used. The research by Bigelow and La Gaipa was similar to that of Corsaro’s as not much research had been done prior to their investigations within the study of friendship in children. However these investigations differentiated in the method of how data was obtained and portrayed. In 1975 Bigelow and La Gaipa requested 480 children, with an equal range of girls and boys, aged between six and fourteen years to write essays on friendship. They requested 60 students each from eight difference schools, 30 boys and 30 girls, from eight different areas in America. The specific information targeted was what they sought in a best friend and how this differed to other relationships they had. (Brownlow, 2012, p.242). The approach they took to their findings was content analysis, they had exchanged the qualitative data they held into quantitative data. Bigelow and La Gaipa collated the data from these essays and converted them into a numerical format so that a frequency count could identify any consistencies within the study. They had a determined list of twenty one friendship expectancies and tallied these when found...

Choi ∗ , Mei Li Department of Supply Chain Management, W. P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287-4706, United States a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t Our study examines the state of qualitative case studies in operations management. Five main operations management journals are included for their impact on the field. They are in alphabetical order: Decision Sciences, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Journal of Operations Management, Management Science, and Production and Operations Management. The qualitative case studies chosen were published between 1992 and 2007. With an increasing trend toward using more qualitative case studies, there have been meaningful and significant contributions to the field of operations management, especially in the area of theory building. However, in many of the qualitative case studies we reviewed, sufficient details in research design, data collection, and data analysis were missing. For instance, there are studies that do not offer sampling logic or a description of the analysis through which research outcomes are drawn. Further, research protocols for doing inductive case studies are much better developed compared to the research protocols for doing deductive case studies. Consequently, there is a lack of consistency...

Management Research

...Elements Of Research Design Instructional Goals 1. To clarify the various components of research design as indicated in Figure 5.1 of the book; 2. To highlight obvious combinations in research design choices; for example, a lab or field experiment is invariably conducted to establish cause and effect relationships; a lab experiment is always done in a contrived setting with maximal researcher interference and in a longitudinal fashion.; 3. To stress the importance of making optimal research design choices aimed at balancing scientific rigor and research costs (and feasibility). Discussion Questions 1. What are the basic research design issues? Describe them in some detail. Basic research design issues are primarily a function of the purpose of the study (whether it is exploratory, descriptive, or hypothesis-testing), and relate to such aspects as the type of study to be done (causal or correlational), the setting in which it will be done (natural or contrived), how much of researcher control will have to be exercised (very little in the case of field studies, to very much in the case of experimental designs), how many times data will have to be collected (one shot versus longitudinal), and the unit of analysis – i.e. the level at which data will be aggregated. For most correlational studies, the field setting with minimal researcher influence will be the choice. Most field studies are generally cross-sectional, though some could be longitudinal. Longitudinal studies, though...
