Research in Motion (RIM) is a Canadian wireless device company which is the designer and manufacturer of the Blackberry Smartphone. Research in Motion was founded in 1984 and is headquartered in Waterloo, Canada. The company also creates solutions for the worldwide mobile communications market including the software that allows the Blackberry Smartphone to provide mobile access to email applications, media and the internet. As a company reliant on its intellectual property, RIM has to be careful. All actions carried out on RIM’s internal network are logged, which means that employee that want to have private conversations should bring in their personal devices. Any conversation on company network whether verbal or written, is transparent and in visibility. Also, to protect its advantage as much as possible, RIM followed a very careful and consistent policy of securing as much patent protection for its products as possible while continuing to push ahead with product development and continuously extending its technology capabilities.
RIM has been involved in a series of suits relating to alleged patent infringement. * 2001 – RIM sued competitor Glenayre Electronics for infringing on RIM’s “Single Mailbox integration” patent. The suit was eventually settled. * 2002 – Filed suit against start-up competitor Good Technology and also file additional complaints throughout the year. Good Technology agreed to a licensing deal and settling the outstanding litigation. * As RIM was awarded a patent for a keyboard design on the hand-held email devices, the company sued Handspring of its Treo device. Handspring finally agreed to License RIM’s patent to avoid further litigation.

Although the Research in Motion has sued several competitors, they also have been sued. There has been multiple lawsuits against RIM for patent infringements, with the most notable one brought by NTP Inc. for patent infringements in email over wireless technology. After a long-running legal battle, RIM announced on March 3, 2006 that it had settled "full and final settlement of all claims" paying NTP Inc. US$ 612.5 million. However, to the despair of RIM, another lawsuit was brought by Visto Corp on May 1, 2006 for patent infringements; this has yet to be settled. RIM’s mission for its technologies is to always be on and always be connected. An industry influence for RIM is wireless technology. Wireless is one of the hottest markets and is expected to continue to grow as support for new services continue to grow. RIM has been able to place themselves as the second largest supplier of smartphones. Comparing RIM to their competitors they have a few core competencies that make them a strong designer, marketer and manufacturer. These competencies are: * The ability to sell their Blackberry devices to over 200 carriers which can run on a multitude of networks. * The ability to advertise their products across different networks * Employees being connected to their business at all times allows for effective communication * Consumers have the opportunity to choose from a large selection of Models. RIM is currently recognized as the wireless data communications industry leader for designing and developing the BlackBerry wireless solution. The company continues to maintain its leadership by focusing on the further development of two-way wireless technologies and enabling applications, protecting its intellectual property. The policy of the company is to apply for patents, acquire and/or seek other appropriate proprietary or statutory protection when it develops valuable new or improved technology.
