...Journal of Applied Foreign Languages Fortune Institute of Technology, June, 2009 Volume 3 An Investigation into Effectiveness of Peer Feedback Grace Hui Chin Lin Ph.D., Texas A&M University M.S., University of Southern California Paul Shih Chieh Chien Ph.D., University of Cambridge Ed.M., Harvard University Abstract Copious researches argue the effectiveness of peer-correction in writing courses (e.g., Connor & Asenavage, 1994). Also, Coit (2004) mentions using peer feedback for correcting articles through a student-centered environment is a beneficial pedagogy to extend learners’ academic-style writing practice. Therefore, this study focused on investigating effectiveness of peer feedback from communal, cognitive, cooperative and pedagogical perspectives. This study also argues that it is English writing teachers’ obligation and responsibility that they should ensure their writing learners compose articles in an atmosphere where they can learn from their peers cooperatively. According to Coit (2004), “Based on theories in collaborative learning and social cognitive development, peer review has assumed an important role in both L1 and L2 writing classrooms.” (p. 902) When students are authorized to take on the role of the editor for their peer’s papers to carry out the correction process, they seem to be more confident and motivation-stimulated in their writing courses. In order to achieve this significant goal of releasing students’ anxiety and raising...

...Implementation Approach All the initiatives, including establishing and expanding core ICT infrastructure, delivery of services ...etc under the Digital India programme have definitive completion time targets. Majority of the initiatives are planned to be realized within the next three years. The initiatives planned for early completion (“Early Harvest Programmes”) and citizen communication initiatives (“Information for All”) have already started going live and are being completed. The Digital India programme aims at pulling together many existing schemes. These schemes will be restructured, revamped and re-focused and will be implemented in a synchronized manner. Many elements are only process improvements with minimal cost implications. The common branding of programmes as Digital India highlights their transformative impact. While implementing this programme, there would be wider consultations across government, industry, civil society, and citizens to discuss various issues to arrive at innovative solutions for achieving the desired outcomes of Digital India. ...Into The Wild Thoreau Quote Essay By: Kayla Hermening “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not when i came to die, discover that I had lived.” This is one of the many quotes that Chris McCandles lived by. He did exactly what the quote states. He went to live off the land and only have the essentials of life. During the summer when me and my family go Up North and stay at our cabin stranded it the middle of no where, this is exactly how I feel. While living in the society we live in today it’s really hard to get away from technology. The cabin is so far out that we barely get cell phone service and we can’t get the internet. We have cable but i much rather be outside riding the ATV than watching some stupid TV show about teens getting drunk and then knocked up. We don’t even have to use our cars when we are up north because we can drive our ATV right into town. Writers who come up with quotes have a great impact on society today. There are several things that quotes can influence, such as writers. In the song Runaway by Love and Theft, it says “and pack my bags and never look back, run a parallel line with the railroad tracks and make my getaway. This says exactly what Chris did accept Chris didn’t bring much with him when he left. “And from a rearview I got a clear view of who I used to be, a little bit faster don’t wanna turn around....

...Synopsis Born on May 14, 1984 in Dobbs Ferry, New York, Mark Zuckerberg co-founded the social-networking website Facebook out of his college dorm room. He left Harvard after his sophomore year to concentrate on the site, the user base of which has grown to more than 250 million people, making Zuckerberg a billionaire. The birth of Facebook was recently portrayed in the filmThe Social Network. Understanding people is not a waste of time. – Mark Zuckerberg Early Life Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984 in Dobbs Ferry, New York, into a comfortable, well-educated family. His father, Edward Zuckerberg, ran a dental practice attached to the family's home. His mother, Karen, worked as a psychiatrist before the birth of the couple's four children—Mark, Randi, Donna and Arielle. Zuckerberg developed an interest in computers at an early age; when he was about 12, he used Atari BASIC to create a messaging program he named "Zucknet." His father used the program in his dental office, so that the receptionist could inform him of a new patient without yelling across the room. The family also used Zucknet to communicate within the house. Together with his friends, he also created computer games just for fun. "I had a bunch of friends who were artists," he said. "They'd come over, draw stuff, and I'd build a game out of it." To keep up with Mark's burgeoning interest in computers, his parents hired private computer tutor David Newman to come to the house once a week and work...

...Figurative language Figurative language can take multiple forms such as simile or metaphor. Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia Of Literature says that figurative language can be classified in five categories: resemblance or relationship, emphasis or understatement, figures of sound, verbal games, and errors. A simile is a comparison of two things, indicated by some connective, usually "like", "as", "than", or a verb such as "resembles" to show how they are similar. Example: "His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry.../And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow." A metaphor is figure of speech in which two "essentially unlike things" are shown to have a type of resemblance or create a new image. The similarities between the objects being compared may be implied rather than directly stated. Example: "Fog comes on little cat feet" An extended metaphor is metaphor that is continued over multiple sentences. Example: "The sky steps out of her daywear/Slips into her shot-silk evening dress./An entourage of bats whirr and swing at her hem, ...She's tried on every item in her wardrobe." Onomatopoeia is a word designed to be an imitation of a sound. Example: “Bark! Bark!” went the dog as he chased the car that vroomed past. Personification is the attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions, especially as a rhetorical figure. Example: "Because I could not stop for Death,/He kindly stopped for me;/The carriage held but just...

Clearly and succinctly identify and explain the problem within the framework of the theory or line of inquiry that undergirds the study. This is of major importance in nearly all proposals and requires careful attention. * The Ebola epidemic is the largest in the history, affecting multiple countries in West Africa. Poverty, lack of adequate medical facilities, inadequate education, cultural/social barriers and political inertia are but a few factors that facilitate the spread of this disease which undermining the hard-won economic and social gains that many African countries were able to make. The impact of Ebola is pervasive and far-reaching, affecting individuals and communities not only psychologically but also economically and socially. Families lose their most productive members to this disease, leaving children and elderly people with no support. The high cost of the disease wreaks havoc within communities where the already fragile structures are not capable of absorbing further strain. Purpose of the study “The purpose...

...Research Proposal (Assignment 5 semester 2) Title Further investigation into people’s relationships with smoking. Aims & Objectives The aim of this research is to establish an extensive bank of valuable information that can be used to develop more effective campaigns and techniques for the cessation of smoking. This information will be collated using various design tools to create effective and accessible resources. We will achieve this by using a combination of semi-structured interviews alongside detailed observations of those who have been smoking (socially or heavy) for 2 years or more. Background This research has been instigated as a result of continued investigation into smoking; its users and the existing, often unsuccessful cessation programs. We hope the research will be used to inform those developing cessation programs of the motives and reasons behind individual smoking behaviour so that programs and advertising can be developed to achieve a higher success rate. The knowledge gained may be used to provide a greater understanding of areas related to smoker addiction that have not been explored in depth but have a substantial impact on the effectiveness of cessation. Interest in this area stemmed from the reading of “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell. In chapter 7 in particular he discusses the distinct personality type associated with smokers; as well as the significance of peer and psychological factors in relation to an individual’s dependency on smoking...

...Midterm Exam Question Student’s Name Institution of Learning Using the United States as your example, describe with pertinent examples, the pros and cons of legal and illegal migration The United States is undoubtedly the country with the largest number of immigrants in the world. Following the fast-growing economy of North America, people from all walks of life across the globe have been flowing in the United States in their thousands. Today, the densely populated North America comprises immigrants from different religious and ethnic backgrounds who have come in search of job opportunities and better lives. Both the legal and illegal immigrants play a significant role in shaping the US economy. While immigrants play a contributory role in the overall growth of the American economy, they still pose some detrimental effects upon the national economy. Both the legal and illegal immigrants bring some benefits upon the economic development of the United States. For instance, immigrants help to fill the vacant job positions in the various sectors of the economy. By so doing, the immigrants help to ensure a continued high productivity and an increased gross domestic product. Immigrants have helped to further the income, productivity and employment rates of the United States. Immigrants, especially the PhD and advanced degree holders also help to increase competition in the US economy. Many engineers and productive scientists in the United States are immigrants and play a leading...

...Heroes We live in a world where we are told we can do what we want and we are in control of our own lives, but does that mean we can take our own lives as well? Today our suicide rates are raising rapidly as the younger generations grow. As of now, the topic of legalizing assisted suicide is being as the rates of the terminally ill rise. We as morally upright people should ban together and stop the legalization of assisted suicide because it will create a black market, the emotional and mental state of the assailant is put into jeopardy and if doctors are involved in the suicide they are violating the morals the vowed to honor upon certification. If assisted suicide became legal what would happen to the bodies? Sure, some will have a proper funeral and be buried accordingly but what about those people who are financially unstable and only see death as a way out of all their problems. One possibility is they are sold to black market buyers whose specialty is body parts and organs. If assisted suicide was made legal black market contributors would see this opportunity to be able get all the organs they wanted and sold them at ridiculous prices. It could a common notion that someone of the deceased would not want their body that there “in control” of be cut up and sold off on an illegal buying place. Allen Hall presents a very compelling argument as she is reporting on a woman who is working as a nurse at Dignatis, an assisted suicide clinic named, Soraya Wernli. Wernli reports...

...reserch report Solar Energy Solar energy is a perfect source of energy. Energy with no pollution what so ever. No poisonous gasses or destruction of rainforests. This never ending source of energy comes from the sun. Solar energy is the visible energy produced in the sun as a result of a constant nuclear fusion reaction. The amount of energy at the solar constant, which is at outer edge of the earth's atmosphere, is two calories per minute per cm squared. A calorieis the amount of energy needed to raise one gram of water one degree Celsius. If we could efficiently harness the energy bombarding the earth for twenty-four hours we could power New York for a year. Unfortunately the photovoltaic cells that change the energy into electricity are so inefficient that it would take twenty-five years to pay for it's self in output. There many uses of solar energy. Some homes rely fully on the power of the sun to heat their water. Other houses have flat plate collectors which aid in the heating of the house and water. Solar Energy plays a vital role in the absorption cooling cycle in a process called solar cooling. Since wind is caused by the up and down movement of hot and cold air, wind energy can be a branch of solar energy. The same thing with tidal energy. And since the sun plays a vital role in the water cycle hydroelectric energy can be attributed to solar energy. Solar Energy has great potential in becoming a main source of energy in the...
