...child residences would form “families” within the group. They defined roles, such as mother, father, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, etc. The residences also developed de facto rules and structures within their community. While there are many, many arguments among the residence, each child relies on one another for emotional support because in many regrades, the other residence and staff is their only support and relationships. This was interesting, and something unexpected, in an environment where residence changes from month-to-month. Being a new person at the shelter, the residences do warm up to new people fairly easy, and include them into their community fairly quick. One resident even expressed that is what they liked about the shelter, “always having new faces come...

...There are four main phases involved in the process of decision analysis that is the problem structuring, preference elicitation, recommendation decision and sensitivity analysis. Under the problem structuring phase several issues need to be identified and defined. The first task to be carried out involves context decision definition. For example, this is the stage of identifying a college. After defining the problem, the objectives or objective is defined. For example, to come up with the decision of attending my college, the main objective was to find a college which offers the course that will assist me in gaining access to my career. In addition, the college had to offer that course at an affordable price and be near my place of residence (Howard, & Matheson 2005). The next step involves the generation and identification of decision alternatives. Under this step, I evaluated different colleges which I could attend that offered the same course as the one I needed. After this, a hierarchical model of the objectives is formed. This assists in easily understanding the relationship existing between the objectives more easily. Moreover, a basis for further analysis is also created. Finally, measures are provided so as to identify the extent to which the decision alternatives satisfy the stated objectives for example, college A was going to offer the same course that I wanted to study but at a much higher price compared to college B which was going to offer the same course...

...Does Disciplinary Power enforce good or bad behaviour from students in York University Accommodation? Introduction When looking at Foucault’s concept of disciplinary power, we looked at our own expectations compared with our actual experiences of living in university run accommodation. With most students coming to university, it is the first time that they will live on ‘their own’, without the rules and restrictions that they had when living at home with their parents, therefore a degree of freedom and independence was expected. However, we noticed that our actions were restricted by the rules imposed on us due to the acceptance of the university run accommodation. From our own experiences, we witnessed students displaying bad behavioural characteristics through resistance. This led our group to investigate the impact that the rules have on students’ behaviours and the universities use of disciplinary power to ‘control’ students’ behaviour. We also wanted to determine from the student’s perspective, the impact these controls had on their behaviour. Methodology There has been a lot of research conducted to study the behaviours of students and their resistance to authority, however they were not written in the students’ perspective. By investigating the behaviours of students from their perspective, it allows us to have a more accurate account of their experiences and the impact that the university’s restrictions has on them. It also enables us to determine why students either...

...This principal has been set up through practise and is not detailed in an act. Whereby, if the child is living with one parent and doing well with that one parent. Then the court will not change things, they will leave them how they are. This minimalist principal can be seen to be upheld in the case of Ellis v Ellis. In this case, ‘both parents wanted residence of their two children. The children were currently living with the mother and the father had gone off to live with a younger Finnish women. The father wanted residence because he said that the mother caused emotional problems to the children, was worried about her parenting skills. However, the sheriff upheld the status quo principal and the mother was given residence. The sheriff made the decision because the children were doing well at school and were settled. The sheriff also had evidence from a lot of witnesses saying that she was in fact a good mother. There was also the uncertainty of the father moving to Finland’ . Children over the age of twelve have the right to have a say in where they live. The courts will take into account the view of Andrew who is aged ten and Anna who is aged seven depending on their level of maturity and...
