...Arc of Justice- Residential Segregation The Arc of Justice depicts the struggles, injustices, and hatred experienced by ethnic minorities in the United States during early part of the 20th century. Throughout the book, author Kevin Boyle shows to us the violence and oppression endured by blacks as they strived towards success and racial equality. A key struggle for many African American families trying to improve their lifestyle and social status in northern American cities, was finding a place to live and raise their families. Those who dared to move from the cities’ black quarters into white neighborhoods faced fierce opposition from white supremacist groups and residents alike. ...Racism in America American racism has been an issue since the time of colonial period all the way to the time of slave trade and slavery. America is still one of the leading countries where racism has been practiced to a larger extent from the colonial periods where it was sanctioned and heavy punishments were administered to the offenders. America being a country of long history, it has people from different races namely; Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans and Anglo Americans (Rhoads, 2005). The definition of social class according to Pew research and based on the results of their survey is the stratification of individuals based on income, education level, financial satisfaction, occupation wealth and prestige. Based on those factors individuals are grouped into levels of socioeconomic class namely: upper class, upper-middle class, lower-middle class, and lower class. For the sake of their survey, Pew research grouped together the individuals in the lower-middle class and lower class into one group. Any observer of American society would quickly note that there are large variations in wealth, material possessions, power and authority, and prestige in our society. They would also note differences in access to education, healthcare and leisure. Income is one of the biggest measures or indicator of socioeconomic status. In the United States there is inequality in the distribution of income. Those in the upper class aka the elite represent the smallest percentage of the population yet they hold majority of the income.
