...George Orwell's essay 'Shooting an Elephant' gives remarkable insight into the human psyche. The essay presents a powerful theme of inner conflict. Orwell feels strong inner conflict between what he believes as a human being, and what he believes and should do as an imperial police officer. The author is amazingly effective in illustrating this conflict by providing specific examples of contradictory feelings, by providing an anecdote that exemplified his feelings about his situation, and by using vivid imagery to describe his circumstances. A police officer in the British Raj, the supposedly 'unbreakable'; ruling force, was afraid. With his gun aimed at an elephant's head, he was faced with the decision to pull the trigger. That officer was George Orwell, and he writes about his experience in his short essay “Shooting an Elephant” to save face, he shrugged it off as his desire to “avoid looking the fool” (George Orwell, 77). In truth, the atmosphere of fear and pressure overwhelmed him. His inner struggle over the guilt of being involved in the subjugation of a people added to this strain, and he made a decision he would later regret enough to write this story. In his essay, Orwell describes how the abuses and treatment he witnessed oppressed him with an intolerable sense of guilt, (Orwell, 72). This is not some minor pang, or nagging worry. The shame pressed down on his shoulders with an unbearable weight. He also describes the injustices in detail...

...on Adam's part in God's righteousness alone. Secondly, God (through implication) commands Adam to live according to his capacity to reason rationally. It is made clear to Adam that the first commandment, having to do with faith, is the primary commandment, since it is the only one God articulates. But, when Adam passes the information on to Eve, he does not make this distinction as clear. He also further convolutes the distinction with other things he says. Thus the order of importance of the two contradictory commandments is lost when told to Eve. Then, In book 9, Satan takes advantage of Eve's lack of information by presenting Eve with a situation wherein the conclusion that rational reasoning would produce is at odds with the conclusion that a blind trust in faith would produce. Eve cannot abide simultaneously by both of God's commandments in this situation. By eating the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge (as Satan tells her to), Eve is guilty of losing faith, which initiates the "original, mortal sin" (9,1003-4). However, acting reasonably is what Adam tells her is otherwise valued by God and is generally the human connection to the divine. Therefore, while Eve is guilty of losing faith (which she understands as one of God's commandments), she is entirely following God's (and Adam's) commandment to be reasonable. God's commandments are inherently self-contradicting. From Eve's perspective, the contradiction (of the commandments) is even more apparent, and confusing, since the...

...DOMINION IN CHRIST A king rules his domain with a word of authority. God created and maintains everything by His Word of power. You who resemble God must rule everything by your word of authority. Your language should be always, “let there be”! Jesus in His earthly Adam was created to rule and have dominion over all other creations (Ge.1:26). This is God’s intention and also His blessing. The purpose of the new creation is to rule and reign in life (Ro.5:17). Sin, satan, sickness and world cannot have dominion over you. God has commanded you to subdue it under your authority. You are born to rule! A king rules his domain with a word of authority. God created and maintains everything by His Word of power. You who resemble God must rule everything by your word of authority. Your language should be always, “let there be”! Jesus in His earthly walk ruled over the demons, diseases, nature and everything by His Word power. You are engrafted in Him. His Words now go through your mouth and rule everything. You are God’s Zion. Out of you should go the scepter of God to subdue all enemies (Ps.110:2). Jesus still rules through you in midst of His enemies. It was not Adam alone who was created in the image of God to dominate. Eve was also included. In Christ, there is no male or female. The gender difference is broken in Christ (Gal.3:28; Col.3:11). Life in Christ knows no barrier of gender or creed or race or color. All human beings come from Adam and Eve. It’s the devil who brought all...

...Protagonist of the story is Job because all of this story are about him, Job is spirit of the story. The antagonist of course, Satan played that role. There were many objectors to our protagonist but Satan was considered as the chief antagonist who managed to destroy Job’s wealth, wipe out his children and make him to suffer many other things like nasty skin boil for instance. Job is dynamic character because through the story he changed from a loyal servant who favor god to a man who fall into distress because of his suffering then finally realize his mistake and submit to God’s will in total obedience. God and Satan can be considered as static characters because through of this story, they seem not to change anything inside. God still God, he always has his own rule and ways, he is wise enough to do everything for a reason. In the book of Job, the author used indirect exposition to reveal characteristic of characters. We read the story and then made our own impress about characters. Job is heroes of this story. He has many things that people dream of, a wealthy landowner and owner. He is loyal, faithful and after many tests and challenge, has found the right way to serve god and lived happy fully. The main conflict in the book of Job is the one between Job and Satan. The conflict of this story has two main sections. The first one focus on the attack of Satan on Job and he react. In the second, it...

...understanding and easygoing. From Lines 1013-1096, Adam explains to Eve that they could have it much worse, and suggests that instead of bringing harm to themselves or others they should instead admit their faults and beg for his pardon. Adam’s speech to Eve about begging for forgiveness and God’s subsequent acceptance represents kindness and honesty prevailing over hate, and shows the inverse of what the council of hell chose to do. From lines 1013 to 1096 we see a change in Adam’s feelings toward their situation. Instead of feeling contempt for Eve and Satan and wanting to act out on his hatred, he thinks rationally about what the consequences of those hasty actions may be. On lines 1020 through 1028, Adam states that even though death may be a quick solution to their problems, he doesn’t doubt the vengefulness of God and says that he will not exempt them from paying for it later, and will make “death in them live.” On hurting Satan, he says that that will only put him out of his misery and allow him to escape his punishment, while adding onto theirs. This shows that Adam is choosing not to let hate overwhelm him and dictate his actions, unlike the council in hell, who chose to corrupt mankind out of spite for God. Adam goes on to say that their punishments are not so bad, and that they almost certainly thought they were going to be killed as their punishment when Jesus came down to judge them. However their punishment is birth for Eve and having to hunt for Adam. Adam says that...

...Emmanuel Avila 9/14/14 Per. 2 Childhood Narrative It was a cold winter day in New Mexico 2008. It was snowing and I can feel the snow getting into my shoes and melting. It made my feet a wrinkly after I took my shoes off. We were visiting a family friend and they had a big back yard. While everyone was inside I went to the backyard to play. Then I met this kid… I forgot his name but, lets just call him devil child. I don’t what in God’s name was wrong with this child but he had the worst attitude, and temper. I don’t remember what I did to devil kid but he was mad hell. I was sitting on a old dog house that looked like it was going to break any moment. It smelled like crap and it gave me a splinter when I touched it. But I still sat on it. Back to the devil child he was mad as hell. He got so mad until the point when he threw the closest thing he could find at me. At first I thought it was a stick but while it was in the air, coming at me that’s when I realized it wasn’t a stick. It was a full-length fixed blade knife. I can still remember that knife like the back of my hand. It had a polished wooden handle with a stainless steel, razor sharp, blade. It struck me on my bottom left lip. The blade sliced my lip leaving it hanging. I fell off the doghouse but it felt like falling of a cliff. I landed hard on the soft white snow. My mum took me to the hospital where I got six stiches on my lip. I fucking hate that kid still to this...

...Arnold Friend potentially tends to be a beast. In the story, it argues whether Arnold Friend represents Satan or not. I think he does, because he represents a devil figure for the main reason of tricking Connie to ride off with him. Arnold is portrayed of having shaggy black hair and drives a convertible jalopy painted gold. Arnold is not a teenager when Connie realizes the features, such as the painted eyelashes, wig structure, and his stuffed boots. Those features led to her thinking that he wasn’t a teenager, who he isn’t and he’s way much older actually. Oates portrays Arnold to be a psychopathic stalker, but never states the value of his role. She asks him how does he knows her name, and his response was he knows a lot about her. He begins to tell Connie all her friends’ names and tells her where her parents are. The passage below paints a picture of Arnold’s character. But I know what it is. I know your name and all about you, lots of things, Arnold Friend said. He had not moved yet but stood still leaning back against the side of his jalopy. I took a special interest in you, such a pretty girl, and found out all about you—like I know your parents and sister are gone somewhere and I know where and how long they're going to be gone, and I know who you were with last night, and your best girl...

...Temptation All of us experience temptations. So did the Savior, but He “gave no heed unto them” (D&C 20:22). Similarly, we do not have to yield simply because a temptation surfaces. We may want to, but we don’t have to. 3. Satan, who is called the tempter (Mt. 4:3; 1 Thess. 3:5), is out to get us. He doesn’t care how spiritual we are, or how secure we are in our Christian homes; he is going to tempt us to sin hoping to lead us away from God and our families. FIRST, TO RESIST TEMPTATION, WE MUST UNDERSTAND WHAT TEMPTATION IS. Temptation is an enticement or an allurement to sin against the will of God. 2. James explains temptation this way: (Jam. 1:13-15) “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” 3. These verses teach several things about temptation. a. First, God does not tempt us to sin, in fact, (1 Cor. 10:13) explains that God provides us with a way out of temptation. God allows us to be tempted in order to refine our faith and to help us grow in our dependence upon Him. b. Second, temptation in of itself is not sin. Jesus was tempted, however, He was without sin. Temptation only becomes sin when we give into the temptation. 4. Temptation is a process...

...sunrise to sunset.” Praise should be the first activity when you open your eyes in the morning and the last activity when you close them at night. David said, “I will thank the Lord at all times. My mouth will always praise Him.” God is seeking for worshippers: John 4:23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. * The spirit part of an unsaved man is dead. * However, the spirit part of those who have received Jesus in their lives is alive. * There can be no true worship unless our spirit is alive. This happens when we receive Jesus as our personal Savior. I. Music in the beginning God created music but Satan distorted it. He used it to deceive many and steal the worship and praise that belongs to God. Music in the beginning was ordained by God and was pleasing to Him. God gave Lucifer the ministry of music for one reason only, and that was to lead the angelic hosts in worship to God. Music was given or created to minister to God the Father. It was born...

...Abstract Young Goodman Brown portrays a common disaster a young Christian experiences when he/she allows him/her self to stray from the familiar paths prescribed by the Bible and other mature Christians. The journey of Goodman Brown parallels many who have attempted to walk the Christian path and somehow strayed into dangerous territory. The story is about a young man named Goodman Brown who goes on an errand of evil intent taken place in the darkness of a forest. Upon arriving, brown encounters another traveler who is revealed to be the devil. The devil employs cunning tactics that compel the young Christian to abandon his faith and returns to live out the rest of his life without hope and in despair. Being aware of some of the tactics the devil uses to deceive young believers would help others to stick to the familiar paths. The story contains elements of some tactics the devil uses to deceive young, and sometimes even old, Christians. It does not help that the character in the story, Brown, is somewhat enticed by the devil’s suggestions or illusions (the text does not disclose whether or not the people that where encountered on the journey were the actually people themselves). Browns curiosity of evil is likened to any person’s sinful curiosities and each person must choose to either take the advice from others that some sinful behavior leads to destruction or there are some who find that they must experience sin for themselves. Two factors indicate...

...Things aren’t always as they appear to be. This is true in John Faustus’s case in terms of his relationship with Mephistopheles and in turn the devil himself. Poor Faustus believes it is he who has called upon the demon Mephistopheles and it is his tongue that orders the servant of hell, yet he could not be any more mistaken. In reality, Faustus is the one with strings attached to him and it is Lucifer, Mephistopheles, and the Evil Angel playing the role of the puppeteer. Nevertheless, Faustus remains a student to the ideology of Christianity throughout his adventures, even amongst the bleakest of hours. God never leaves the side of John Faustus, as He relentlessly tries to bring Faustus back onto the path of righteousness. Though it was indeed Doctor Faustus that summed the evil form of Mephistopheles and bargained with the devil for control over him, it is really Faustus who is being controlled by the Evil Trinity. The Doctors free will, one of the distinguishing factors of humankind, one of Gods greatest gifts given to man, has been taken away from him. The Evil Trinity is subtly controlling his every move, poking and prodding him so that he stays on the path they have laid out for him, the path to Hell. Whenever Faustus begins to question his decision and seek repentance, either Mephistopheles distracts him with earthly pleasures or facts of hell, the Evil Angel whispers some doubt in his ear, or the Devil himself appears and threatens John that it is all over and far too...

...In “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, one can see that Arnold Friend is Satan, because he deceivingly lures and steals just like Satan does. The first way Arnold is Satan is portrayed through his deceivingly luring character. In the short story, Arnold drives up to a fifteen year old girl’s home in a gold painted car. He then honks four times in order to deceive the girl, Connie, into believing she actually knows him. Friend hopes the familiar sound of the honk will convince her that he is a friend. In addition, he seems to have the perfect attractive face in Connie’s eyes. But she also feels as if something were wrong for she thinks, “His whole face was a mask, she thought wildly, tanned...

...In “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, Ray Bradbury uses a variety of mythological, literary, and biblical allusions. An example of a literary allusion is when Mr. Holloway vents to Will about his thoughts when he says, “I asked myself, why would Mephistopheles want a soul?”(Bradbury 203). This alluded to Mephistopheles, a fallen angle spirit of the devil, in the novel Dr. Faustus. Mephistopheles preys on people who are in dark despair and people with un healable wounds so they can sell their souls to the devil. Bradbury made this allusion because Jim was willing to sell his soul to the carnival so he can become older just like how Faust sold his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. An example of a mythological allusion is when Bradbury says the “Medusa gaze of Mr. Dark”(Bradbury 245). This alludes to the mythological monster Medusa who would turn the people who look at her face into stone. Mr. Dark gave this gaze that froze will yet Jim was already frozen from the gaze of Mr. Dark, which left him in a trance. An example of a biblical allusion would be when Will reads “born in the dust, raised in the dust, and some day winds up back in the dust”(Bradbury 31). This alludes to bible because it was said that people came from dust and will die and end up in dust again. This alludes to Jim will most likely die if Will does not protect him. In “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, Ray Bradbury uses symbols such as the number 3 and the colors red and white. Bradbury uses...

...es. Oates is trying to teach us about stranger danger. Connie the main character is stuck between reality and fantasy. In the 1960’s Connie and her friends are going to a local diner to hang out with the older teenagers. This where Connie met a boy named Arnold Friend. In the story, the author is using symbolism to mainly talk about the purpose of meeting Stanger in public. In the beginning, Connie view the car as important symbol of independence, power and freedom. When she first recognized the car “she draw her shoulder up and sucked in her breath with the pure pleasure of being alive” (Oates 201).When Connie noticed the car “convertible jalopy painted gold” she knew it was Arnold Friend. When she first saw Arnold “Connie slit her eyes at him and turned away, but she couldn’t help glancing back and there he was still watching her” (Oates 201). She did not know at the time that she was under Arnold Friend spell. At the drive in Arnold stated “Gonna get you, baby” He is giving her a warning that he is coming to get her. She has not understood what he was saying because she under his spell. Connie is describing Arnold Friend to have shaggy black hair that looks like a wig and painted on eyelashes. Oates is trying to tell us Arnold friend is not a teenager he is much older. Connie does not know if she is dreaming or this is happening in real life. She greatly wants the attention from older men, but she did not think about the situation she about to go through with Arnold Friend...
