...RESPONSE PAPER Catherine Cahill Philosophy 201: Philosophy and Contemporary Ideas August 8, 2012 Self-proclaimed atheist H.J. McClosky attempts to promote atheism as a superior belief to that of theism in his paper “On Being an Atheist”. McClosky begins his paper by referring to philosophical arguments for the existence of God as proofs. Right away there is a problem with this language and the usage of the word proof if one intends to argue with the majority of philosophers who present arguments for the existence of God or most standard arguments. The basic outline of a philosophical argument follows that an argument is either inductive or deductive. A deductive argument holds that the premise entails the conclusion and an inductive argument holds that a premise renders the conclusion likely to be true. Neither form claims to have empirical proof but only to convey validity and soundness of an argument to be accepted by one who is sane, rational and possesses...

...Weimer Response There are many challenges presented to students in classrooms everyday. Whether it’s something of their own doing like being unmotivated, or something more out of their control like having a bad professor, struggling in college is very easy to do. These types of problems are exacerbated in online classroom settings because the student is left on their own to get the work assigned by their professor completed. They’re basically teaching themselves the content, and that makes it extremely easy to get caught behind if they lack motivation. For me, though, I’m prepared for this because I have that determination and self-starting attitude needed to succeed in an online course. While I can adapt to many different learning and teaching methods, the one that is best for me is one where I’m given the resources needed to succeed in a course and have access to the professor for any questions I may have about any particular assignment. From there, I like to be sent on my own where I’m expected to complete the work. In this class I’d like to see us incorporate peer feedback when we have essay assignments. I feel it gives the students a chance to see how each other interprets the subject, give tips on how to make their work better, and it may give us ideas in future essays. It also gives the professor a chance to allow the students to see our own writing how they see it when reading it. That way, students can have a better feel on what the professor wants in an essay when...

...Reading Response of Lack of Electronic Etiquette Michelle Singletary gave a very strong visual image of her stance on the issue of electronic use in public. The author used many examples that made this essay much more enjoyable to read. The issue presented is something we all need to spend some time and think about. As it not only affects us, but others in the society. It is time for us, to not be selfish and start thinking about others around us. I personally enjoyed this work of art as it was on a topic that actually occurs to me on a daily basis. Whenever I am sitting in a quiet place whether it be trying to study or relax, there always seems to be one person to disturb that moment. A majority of those people who ruin that time are, of course using their personal electronics. Another reason I do not like the constant use of electronics is because whenever I go to spend time with my friends, I usually end up getting annoyed. Due to the fact that they are constantly texting away, and not focusing on fun things we can do without the use electronics. This is a very important topic because it affects how we will act in the future. Nowadays there are so many that prefer to text people instead of meeting face to face or calling. Not only because it saves time but also it saves the effort it takes of having to go through all of the work. Imagine, how it will be in the future where humans communicate to each other electronically instead of verbally. It also disturbs the peaceful...

...Where Do We Go Now? At the end of the film Where Do We Go Now?, the Christian and Muslim women of the village swapped religions overnight leaving the men confused on to what was going on. While men struggled with this decision, the women carried about regular duties as if nothing had changed in their village. After this abrupt shift the men were on the way to bury Nassim, but when they got there, they were stuck trying to figure out which side to put him on, Muslim or Christian. Since the women of the village switched their religions, the men were uncertain as to whether or not Nassim, a Christian, should be buried in the Muslim or Christian side, leading the men to turn around in unison and ask the women “where do we go now?”. This was a really funny way to end the film, and also unexpected. It went from a serious moment, the funeral/ burial, to the confusion of the men of the village. The ending of the movie called for an alternative society in which there are no divisions among the villagers which is demonstrated through religious status. When the men were trying to figure out on which side to bury Nassim, I was thinking why they don’t just put him in the middle, where there would be no difference between Christian or Muslim. This is exactly what the women were trying to do throughout the entire movie and finally accomplished by switching from one religion to another, they wanted the war between two religions to end. This swap in the religions puts into...

...Respone to “Two Kinds” I found Amy Tan’s short story “Two Kinds” to be an emotional and touching story. It centers on the idea figuring out what is best for someone else. This is often a major conflict between parents and their children. Initially, I thought that it would be about a parent trying to exploit their child, which it was, but I felt so sympathetic for it. Then I came to know that the mother of the main character has lost some close family members and their family home in China. With a past like that, which parent wouldn’t want the best for their child? However, the more I read the story, the less sympathetic I felt for the mother and the more I started feeling for the daughter. She made her daughter try to play the piano, which I don’t have problem with, but even though she played badly in the talent show, her mother shouldn’t be disappointed. Afterwards, I found out what the title of the story meant when the daughter and her mother got into an argument about her not wanting to replay the piano. The mother claims that there are only two kinds of daughters, those who are obedient and those who are not. Even though the daughter seemed disobedient when refusing to play the piano again, I still felt sympathetic towards her as I can relate myself with the girl. I was forced to study in medical school for six years even though I never wanted to be a doctor. I personally think that it’s wrong to exploit the children to better their life. The mother of this story...

...Peer-to-Peer and Client/server Networks Professor: Karen Lederer Trevor Kale 4/16/2011 We shall discuess the difference between Peer-to-Peer networks and the Client/Server networks. First we need to describe how each one operates in order to view the differences between both. First we will describe a Peer-to-Peer network. In the Peer-to-Peer network every computer can communicate directly with every other computer.(2009, Dean, Pg.3) Because of this setup no one computer has more authority then another one on the network. Each person on the network can set their access and restrictions for other users to their computer. These configurations are simple to configure and due to the simplisity they do not require a great technical expertise. They also tend to be cheaper due to lack of need of equipment to establish this network. Some disadvantages consist of not being flexible, that is as they grow they become more difficult to handle. Security on these networks is very lacking due to ease of access of unauthorized access. They are also not very practical due to the lack of centralized resources requires a user to have their terminal on in order to access their resources. That is the basics of a Peer-to-Peer network setup, next we move on to the Client/Server model. In a Client/Server network a centralized computer known as a server facilitates communication between other computers on the network known as clients. For a computer to function as a server they must be running...

...WEEK 1 DISCUSSION QUESTION 1-3 DQ1: What are some ways in which receivers of messages provide feedback when listening to or reading a message? What effect does this have on the message? Provide examples Receivers of message provides feedback through body language, eye contract, facial expression or verbal acknowledgment. This effects the sender and the message by either having a positive or negative effect and or determines either a favorable or negative respones, depending on the feedback given by the receiver on the content of the message which might effect the context of the message. For example, if a person rolls their eyes, it can be they are disinterested, dissatisfied or simply aren't listening to the sender. This has a negative effect on the message because it will likely get lost in translation. DQ2: Which step in the communication process do you consider to be the most important? Why do you think this? Which of these steps is the most uncomfortable for you? Why is this? How might you work to change this? I believe the most important step in the communication process is the MESSAGE. The message comprised of ideas, thoughts, feelings, or opinions to be communicated. Sometimes it can be short and concise or as complex as quantum physics. It all depends on what is needed to get across to the receiver and how it interpreted it. ENCODING would be uncomfortable/difficult part. It is uncomfortable/difficult because in my line of work I deal with new and inexperience...

...Synopsis on: Comparing working capital practices in Canada, The United States, and Australia Introduction: The survey is done by Nabil T.Khoury, Keith V.Smith, Peter I. MacKay. This survey was motivated by the desire to understand how working capital is managed by smaller firms in Canada. This includes the management of current assets and current liability accounts, as well as the working capital of the firm in aggregate. Research Methodology: They used a survey instrument that was used in three earlier comprehensive surveys (U.S. 1978, U.S. 1988, Australia 1989) of working capital practices. We ended up with 18 questons that are comparable across four surveys spanning two decades and three countries, wihich enables us to see how working capital practices have varied over time and across international bodies. Objectives: • To have better understanding on how working capital is managed by smaller firms in Canada. • To provide useful perspective for considering future research directions in working capital management through these comparison. Research design: The first comprehensive survey of working capital practices was conducted in 1978(Smith & Sell,1980). The survey instrument used consisted of 35 questions. From a sample of 653 of the largest U.S. industrial firms, 210 were usable, for 32.2% response rate. The survey was replicated a decade later in 1998(Belt & Smith, 1992). The survey instrument was expanded to 38nquestions and sent to a sample of 448 of the largest...

...The New Family: The Different Family Look Daysha Jones SOC203: Social Problems Gina Rollings August 27, 2012 Abstract A lot of experts and others are angry at the fact that same-sex couples exist, now they are worried that if they adopt children that their minds will be corrupted into believing that this is “acceptable behavior.” Also possibly lead to them leading this lifestyle, which they feel could lead to others becoming homosexual. In my opinion, I feel this is a social problem because there has been huge debate over whether or not same sex couples are a part of societies norms. I feel that same-sex couples should not only be able to marry, but be able to complete their family by adopting because many do not have the option or financial stability to afford a surrogate. So it is up to them to either adopt as a single parent or find someone they trust to do it for them, and I feel they should not have to go all of that trouble for the sake of starting a family. There are polices and other legislature in place, but it is not enough The New Family: The Different Family Look Perhaps one of the hot buttons issues in our society today has to be same-sex couples wanting to get married, legally, and start a family by adopting. Same-sex relationships have maybe been around for who knows how long, probably even centuries no one knows; but up until years ago when same-sex couples were getting arrested for attempted to get married people begin to really take notice that...

...Cultural differences in Daily communication between China and America 1. Introtion People have different lifestyle, thinking patterns, behaviors and values, which all inflect one another. In many cross-cultural conversations, misunderstanding can be caused by distinction in the understanding of a same word in the culture difference. A serious question may therefore bring great laghter, while an innocuous statement horrible anger, which caused by culture difference. Experts in sociology claimed that every single culture is distinctive. The word 'culture' is defined as follow in Oxford Advanced Learner's English Chinese Dictionary: customs, arts, social institutions, etc of a particular group or people. Among all distinctions, difference in daily life plays a special role. More details of lifes oversees are shown with the rapid development of communication and media. Facing that very difference between the Chinese and the American however, seems to have led to confusion and even further, false and unscientific evaluation, thus the eventual cultural conflict and descrimination. This paper will therefore focus on the distinction of the Chinese and American culture from the aspect of daily communication . 2.The Importance of Cross-Cultural Communication Because of various reasons, there are a lot of cultural differences between China and the U.S. This creates a barrier for cross-cultural communications. Due to globalization and social development...
