Response to “The generations at work” Recently as I was flipping through the Star newspaper entertainment section, I came across an article titled “The generations at work” written by Jean. It was such an intriguing article that it made me ponder for some time but I won’t agree or disagree to it, it is simply just my point of view. The article talked about the Generations that the X and Y, of the old timers and the restless young ones in the working industries. About the differences of how things are done between these two generations and ideals. “YOUR generation is just too materialistic! All you think about is money, money, money. There’s more to life than that.” (pgh.1) Well, it goes without saying that money makes the world go round. I won’t deny this true albeit fact of our current generation. I do agree that there is more to life than money alone such as love, friends and family. Money simply cannot buy true love, real friends or the bonds a family provides. It cannot buy happiness in the long term or more importantly, life itself. “When I was your age, I never thought about money. True, it is important. But what was more important then was having a job and supporting our own families.” (pgh.4) “Next came loyalty and integrity. Once we started working, we would stay with the company until we retired” (pgh.4) this sentence caught my attention as I was reading through the article. Unlike the current generation of youngsters (Generation Y) who jump ship at a moment’s notice for a better offer such as higher pay, better benefits and chances of promotions and increments, those of the old generation (Generation X) tend to stick with the 1st or 2nd company/organization they joined in their earlier years till the day they retire. “I have lived much longer than you, young man. ...First Response essay In this response essay, I will firstly be analyzing the various concepts put forward by Hu Shi. I will then attest to these arguments before evaluating the article as a whole. Hu Shi’s article “The Significance of The New Thought” in his book China’s response to the West provides an interesting and rational perspective regarding the attitudes displayed in the May fourth movement.
