A graphing calculator is required. Any TI newer than a TI-83 is highly recommended, for example, the TI-83+, TI-84+, or TI-nspire. The mathematics department strongly recommends the TI-Nspire CAS if you will take Calculus 1 or above.
Course Prerequisite(s)
A score of 20 on the ACT Mathematics Section, or equivalent score, or a grade of “C” or better in Intermediate Algebra from an accredited institution is required. However, it is recommended that your ACT score be at least 22. If you are using Intermediate Algebra as a prerequisite and took it at another school, then be prepared to show your transcript to your instructor, or you may be dropped from College Algebra. If you have less than 20 ACT score, then you may take a departmental exam that costs approximately $15 to be allowed into College Algebra. Your instructor will provide instructions if you are interested in this last option.
Course Description
This is a course designed to meet the general education needs of students in business, the sciences, and other programs outside of mathematics. The topics covered include, but are not limited to, linear and nonlinear equations, linear inequalities, linear and nonlinear systems, inverse functions, polynomials, rational functions, exponential functions, and logarithmic functions. Concepts will be developed using appropriate manipulation and technology.
Course Requirements/Grading and Evaluation
Grades will be determined by four in-class exams, online homework assignments, quizzes, attendance and a comprehensive final exam. Since the final exam is comprehensive, then it could contain any concept that we’ve covered throughout the course. The following is a breakdown of the percentages for this course:

Course Objectives/Course Competencies
Upon completion of this course, the student will: * Be proficient at using graphing technology appropriately. * Have a working knowledge of equalities and inequalities. * Understand and apply the basic properties of functions and inverse functions. * Understand complex arithmetic and the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. * Recognize and work with linear, piecewise, quadratic, polynomials, rational, radical, absolute value, exponential, and logarithmic functions. * Use algebraic and modeling skills to solve application problems. * Utilize regression analyses (linear, polynomial, power, exponential, and logarithmic) to formulate equations from real-world statistical data and make predictions. * Be able to solve systems of linear and nonlinear equations. * Utilize matrix techniques to solve a system of linear equations.

Attendance Policies
Prompt and regular attendance is expected of all students enrolled at Henderson State University and is necessary in maintaining acceptable grades. Class attendance is a critical element for student learning. I require that students attend 85% or more of this course for successful course completion. This means 15% of the course is the maximum that should be missed. For each absence, a student will lose points from his/her overall grade. In a TR class, upon a student’s fifth absence, he/she will be withdrawn from the course. In a MWF class, upon a student’s seventh absence, he/she will be withdrawn from the course. If class has already started and you arrive late, then you will not be allowed in the classroom. I will shut and lock the door once class begins. In the event of an unavoidable absence because of illness or emergency, the student is responsible for contacting his/her instructor. Missed quizzes and exams cannot be made up. If you need to leave class early email me ahead of time to let me know AND please sit in a seat near the exit. If you do not inform me that you need to leave early, and you simply leave during the middle of class, you will be counted absent for that day. Three tardies will count as one absence. You are not permitted to leave the classroom during a quiz or exam. If you leave the classroom while taking a quiz or exam, you will not be allowed to continue working on that quiz/exam.

Writing Expectations
Good writing skills are an integral part of a liberal arts education. Inappropriate use of grammar and incorrect spelling may result in point deductions on all assessments. Other Expectations
Students are expected to exhibit appropriate adult behavior. Participate, be Prompt, Prepared, Attentive, and Respectful. The HSU policies and code of conduct are applicable to this class. The use of electronic equipment such as cell phones, cameras, recording devices, MP3 players, headphones, etc. during class is not allowed. Cell phones should be turned off (or muted) and packed away. Students are not allowed to use the calculator on their cell phone at any time during class. Do not sleep during class. Do not eat during class. Any in-class quizzes and exams are to be taken in pencil only. If you use a pen you will automatically lose 10 points. Failure to follow these rules will result in the student’s removal from the classroom and/or course.

Cheating/Plagiarism
Any student representing someone else’s work as his or her own will receive an F on the assignment or exam, receive an F in the course, or be suspended from the university for a semester. Cheating also includes sharing calculators during an exam, using notes during an exam, talking during an exam, or using a cell phone during an exam.

You were charged a course fee when you registered for this course, which is used to pay for tutors to assist you if needed.
