Textbook and Materials: Steiner and Steiner, Business, Government and Society: A Managerial Perspective, McGraw Hill, 13th Ed. (2012), ISBN 978-0-07-811267-6. In addition, readings from other works will be assigned and posted on Blackboard. From time to time, optional reading materials will also be posted.

Course Description and Objectives: This course is completed as a cohort group with MBA 902 Competing in a Global Market II: Analysis and Implementation of Strategy and is taken with the approval of the program Director. A key objective is to provide students with insights into the influences and interactions that society, law, government, and personal values have on the daily and long-term decisions of management. Using an interdisciplinary approach, we will closely examine the legal and ethical environment of business using a wide variety of materials ranging from the textbook to news reports. In this respect, we will attempt to construct a framework wherein socially responsible business decisions can be made, integrating your current knowledge and experience with content in business strategy, global perspectives, and ethical/legal dimensions, necessary to succeed in the global business arena.

Stated differently, you will address the following: • Social responsibilities, legal and ethical duties of business • Forces within and without business which impact management tasks, business operations and stakeholder expectations • Analytical skills, critical judgment and ethical decision making • Various roles we play and things we can do to improve and develop our ability to achieve desired results

During our study, we will develop a tolerance for ambiguities, recognizing that there are issues as to which reasonable and knowledgeable parties may reach different conclusions and sometimes, there is no desirable course of action. The challenge is developing a decision-making framework to maximize the probability of achieving the business goals while minimizing risks.

The course will rely on discussion and case analysis to cultivate understanding of the subject matter. Each class member’s active participation enriches our learning.

The format and structure for many of the class sessions will be student directed.

NOTE: In addition to a final scholarly research paper, students work in small groups to decide and justify ethical decisions in a number of case studies and then discuss with entire class; each student is responsible for leading an interactive class discussion on an assigned business topic with ethical and legal ramifications; and critical thinking is assessed by class participation during each class session.

Course Requirements: This is an issue-oriented course, which requires reading, writing and speaking to refine your ability to identify an issue and its ethical/social implications, gather and interpret relevant information, clarify different positions and develop recommendations to formulate a reasoned position/response.

Course Materials: Students are responsible for all assigned readings and case materials. If you miss a class, you are expected to submit a summary of the key elements of the subject matter assigned for the missed class.

Homework Assignments: All homework assigned will be covered in class either the class it is due and/or the following week. Please make sure the work is completed and turned in on time – which means the beginning of the class for which the assignment is due. If you will not be in class to hand in an assignment, please e-mail it to walters@lasalle.edu, prior to the commencement of the class.

Class Discussions: Active participation is expected from all class members both individually and in collaboration with others.

Class Presentation: Students, either individually or with a partner, are required to prepare and lead a discussion relating to the subject matter of the course, including an original, referenced, PowerPoint presentation.

If you partner with anyone, both students must speak and share responsibility for responding to questions.

This affords the student(s) an opportunity to demonstrate both leadership and presentation skills within the context of facilitating a class discussion

The length of each class discussion, including questions and answers, will be determined based upon the subject matter and number of participants.

At least two different perspectives must be presented using pro/con format or a plaintiff vs. defendant format or another way of addressing opposing views.

You are leading the discussion and educating your peers on the topic you select, based upon your research and analysis – not the textbook’s authors.

At least 3 scholarly sources are required and your PowerPoint presentation must include references and a bibliography. Of course, you may use as many sources as you like, but make sure at least 3 are scholarly and that your research is current.

A sample “A” presentation slide deck is posted for your information.

Please submit your presentation to your instructor prior to class for posting on BlackBoard.

Each class member in the audience will complete a comment sheet and return it directly to the presenter(s). Accordingly, those student comments are not factored into your grade. The purpose is to afford each presenter direct and thoughtful peer feedback with a view toward skills improvement. Separately, there will be a ranking by your peers, which will be factored into your grade.

Research Paper: Each student will write a research paper on an issue or topic relating to the course but not the same topic as your class presentation. After you select the topic that you find of particular interest, have the topic approved, research it using at least 3 scholarly sources (other than the text) and write a documented paper including footnotes (see below for more particulars). You do not need to cover every possible aspect of the general topic you select – just be thorough as to your choice and make sure your supporting research is as current as possible.

Unlike your class presentation in which you will present at least two opposing or conflicting perspectives, your research paper should focus on a specific issue, present your views and the research supporting your hypothesis and set forth your conclusions. For example, you may determine to research whether or not there is any correlation between performance of a stock price and corporate social responsibility programs, how is “ethical decision making” interpreted and applied in other countries, how do companies vet charities, or how will Dodd Frank impact consumer lending. You have an opportunity to select your own area of interest for the paper – with the only topic limitations being that it must relate to the course subject matter and it cannot be the same topic as your presentation.

Think about the topic, research it, reflect and develop your ideas, and write your paper with appropriate citations and references to your source materials.

No more than 50% of your research paper should be from outside sources. The rest of your paper should be your observations, research analysis, synthesis of information and original ideas. This is your opportunity to take a stand and support your position.

The library has requested copies of your papers to add to the collection. You can withhold permission to make the papers available without any adverse consequences or you may decide that you want to make your work available.

If you have any questions, whether relating to selecting a topic or changing a topic or wondering whether or not a source is recognized or something else, please do not hesitate to ask.

The paper must be at least 15 pages long, not including the cover page, executive summary, and bibliography. Stated differently, your paper should have a cover page, an executive summary and a bibliography, however, they do not count toward the 15 page requirement.

Outside sources such as scholarly journals and law review articles are required for the paper. You may use as many sources as you elect but at least 3 of your sources must qualify as “scholarly.” Internet sources such as Wikipedia may be useful for background informational purposes but are not a substitute for vetted, scholarly sources. Newspaper articles add color and emphasis to a paper and may offer support for a perspective but they are not scholarly sources. La Salle’s internet accessible library offers excellent resources, including the following, which are particularly relevant to many of the issues we will be covering this semester: Labor Law Journal; Employee Relations Law Journal; Journal of Business Ethics; Business & Society Review; Journal of Business & Professional Ethics; and Law Review articles. Please do not hesitate to ask for help.

Incomplete citations will not be credited. The La Salle Librarians can teach you techniques for simplifying creating footnotes and a bibliography. Also, the Sheeky Writing Center is staffed to assist you in graduate level writing. You can even access the service remotely and I encourage you to use it.

Papers are to be submitted in both hard copy and electronic format on December 5, 2012.

Grading: Grades will be based on the quality of presentations, the paper, class attendance, homework and class participation.

The paper, due on December 5, 2012, will be evaluated on both form and content. Important considerations in evaluating whether or not the writing is effective include: Grammar (correct grammar and spelling), Organization (the paper is organized and flows well), Purpose (the purpose of the assignment is achieved), Word Choice (sentence structure and word choices reflect understanding and convey ideas in a professional manner), Quality and Use of Resources, and Attribution and Bibliography. See the rubric for Grading for Course Paper and Learning Goals.

Presentations will be evaluated on Substantive Content, Creativity, Ability to Engage class members in the discussion and respond to questions, Grammar, Purpose, and Quality and Use of Resources. See the rubric for Grading for Class Presentation and Learning Goals.

Regular attendance, homework and active class participation are necessary in order to demonstrate an understanding of course subject matter and to cultivate critical thinking skills.

Criteria for assessing critical thinking skills in connection with class discussions and problem analysis include: Problem identification (the student clearly articulates the main problem(s), Alternatives (the student presents at least two strong, viable courses of action that could be considered), Analysis of each alternative course of action (the student discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative), and Proposes a course of action/makes a recommendation (the student selects an alternative and provides rationale to support the selected alternative). See the rubric for Grading for Class Discussion for additional information regarding assessment of the quality of arguments.

Written Assignments: All written assignments are due in on time in electronic format and a hard copy in class. Grades will be reduced for work not turned in when due. If you are unable to attend class on the day an assignment is due, it is up to you to submit the work electronically.

Guidelines for written assignments: • All material must be original work and must not be copied, paraphrased or taken from any other work unless properly referenced. • I want to know your thoughts, ideas, recommendations and your logic. • The purpose of each assignment must be achieved. • Your work should be double-spaced, typewritten, I inch margins, size 12 font. • Use resources appropriately to support ideas • Check sentence structure, word choices and overall content to convey your ideas related to the assignment in a professional manner • Include a title page for each assignment that identifies the assignment, your name and the due date.

Plagiarizing of any kind will not be tolerated and will be handled according to school policy.
