Ha’s Experiences About fourteen million men, women, and children are forced to leave their homes because of persecution, war, and religion. In Thanhha Lai’s book, Inside Out & Back Again, Ha and her family has come to a decision to leave South Vietnam And their home because of the Vietnam War which will make her life seem like it is coming inside out. To get where she is today, Ha has faced refugee camps, homesickness, and leaving their only home. First, Africans are forced to leave their homes because of persecution, civil wars, and poverty. Same thing for Ha but they decided to leave instead of forced out of their homes. Since the war was getting closer Ha’s family had to leave. The book states, “In the distance bombs explode like thunder, slashes lighten the sky, gunfire falls like…show more content… She also wants to go back to Vietnam. On page 195 it explains, “No one would believe me, but at times I would choose wartime in Saigon over peacetime in Alabama.” (Lai 195). She misses Saigon and all its wonders that she used to travel. She also misses your papaya tree and its wonderful fruit. She had a dried papaya that had sugar and other preservatives from the U.S., and her mom watered them down and she said, “Not the same, but not bad at all.” (Lai 234). She still wishes she had a real fresh papaya, but she thinks it is ok. Also sometimes she wishes that they never left because she thought she brought the family bad luck by touching the tile first on Tet. She is telling her mother, “Did I ruin the luck of the whole family? Is that why we’re here?” (Lai 214). She thought it was all her fault and brought them into this mess. In the end, Ha has faced many events in her life. Ha’s country is facing a civil war and she left her only home on a boat to America.
