Reward System for a Human Service Organization

The way employees will fulfill your dream is for them to believe and share in your dream, making your organization the best it can be. As there are many rewards that can be used such as recognition, promotions, reassignment and non monetary bonuses (i.e. vacations, days off) or a simple thank you could be used. Rewards influence behavior, attitude, job satisfactions and performances.

Rewarding and recognizing employees is tough for any organization. Though it can motivate employees to explore more effective ways to do their jobs, it can also discourage efforts. Reward systems should focus on positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is the most effective tool for encouraging desired behavior. It stimulates people to take actions because they to want and they get something of value (internally and externally) for doing it.

An effectively designed and managed reward program can drive an organization to involve team members, individuals and managers in developing their own incentive and reward systems. In designing an effective reward system you need to include, performance payoff, total compensation package, incentive plans should include all managers and employees, systems must be administered with care and fairness, and incentives can be only for performance of a job.

The reward system that I created meets the basic needs, they are competitive benefits, and employees are treated as individuals. The system I created is called the Star Program. It is a multi-tiered reward system. The theme is acknowledging each employee as a star to the organization. Each star represents a separate program.

Reward System Created:

The First Star – “The Shining Star Award” is a certificate program. This system is created for the whole organization, not just from the department heads and down. This is for everybody to thank each other. The employee receives this certificate with a star on it when they witness or experience great service or team work. A Shining Star certificate is given to show their appreciation. Employees can give this certificate to anyone in the company, regardless of their title or position or department they work in. One copy goes to the employee receiving the award and one goes into a bowl for a bi-monthly drawing. Meaning all the names in the bowl will have a chance to win a prize and these include different gift certificates for different things. Some gift certificates may be for a local coffee shop for a free cup of coffee, another may be a free lunch at a fast food restaurant or sub shop or a dozen donuts at the local bakery. If they are picked out of the bowl they get to pick the gift certificate they would like. To keep it fair and to avoid the system being abused to get these certificates, drawing a name from the bowl is made so no one knows who will win. The winners that receive the Award initially will be posted in a common area for everyone to view, as well as, the winner of the bi-monthly drawing. There would also be no limit on how many Shining Star Award Certificates you receive either. If you are doing things that earn you this award your name can be in that bowl numerous times.

The Second Star – “The Super Star Award” is awarded by directors to employees for great job performance. These awards are called “Company Bucks”. Meaning each director is allotted up to $50.00 a month in bucks to give their “Super Stars”. These bucks can be used for a longer lunch, a two hour start time for their work day (i.e. if you have to be in work at 9:00 am you can let your director know in advance that you are going to use your bucks on a determined day and you would arrive at 11:00 am) or it can work for the reverse and be able to leave on a determined day using your bucks for a two hour early release day. This award is given when a director sees an employee doing excellent work, such as going out their way to help customers handle problems, coming up with solutions or giving a customer/client extra attention to help their situation and needs. This reward is for directors to reward great behavior the moment it happens. This is the reason for a monthly allotment for each director. Directors also can use their allotment by saving it throughout the year and throw a party in honor of the entire team’s success in the organization, instead of giving it out monthly to one individual. Director’s may feel that they have a great team and they all need to be awarded this award and save it to throw this party at the end of the year.

The Third Star – “The All Stars Award” is given based on recognition of an employee’s performance that goes above and beyond the job description. It is based on a cash incentive that allows directors to give an employee a certain dollar amount this would be determined by the organizations department heads. Also depending on how much money the organization could give. This would also be if it is a profit or non profit organization. The award is given based on who makes major contributions to the corporation as a whole. To win employees would have to do something truly exceptional. This award would be given yearly, but not as a holiday bonus. Holiday bonuses are already in place with signing on to the company. Example of someone who could win this award would be someone working late, comes in on the weekends to make sure the organizations systems are running properly such as a tech person. They would be one who would receive the All Star Award. Going above and beyond what is expected one to do, instead of waiting till the first business day and all chaos breaks loose because the systems are down and clients/customers have to wait until a Human Service worker can get into the system to process the clients information.

This awards program is given to teams and individuals and includes the entire organization. It is created to improve company productivity, have fun, and to recognize those that are doing not only their required job but are doing more than required and produce a happy and peaceful place of work, adding in exceptional work done for the organization. These awards were made to appeal to the entire organization. The All Star Award is cash based, but keeping in mind the others are gift based. Therefore, the employees will not expect payment for doing their jobs. Though cash based awards aren’t necessary for the other awards to be successful. Employees like to be told they are doing a good job money isn’t always needed employee’s just want recognition of some kind. That is the purpose of the Shining Star Award, which is given by anyone working for the organization.
