... Information Technology (IT) costs are up as well and it is up to the companies to insure that they are utilizing the IT resources to the fullest. "Many organizations find that they have some software titles that are out of compliance [with licensing agreements], while others are being underutilized” (Johnson, 2012). The new system that we are proposing to Riordan, we are confident that it will not be underutilized and that the company gets full use and potential out of this system. Real Time Locating System (RTLS) is what we are proposing to Riordan. We will be discussing aspects of this system in detail that will talk about some of the components, how information will be received, the benefits of RTLS, and some business details that would drive the need for Riordan to acquire this system. As we know, Real Time Locator System (RTLS) is an accurate program that accurately locates and tracks items and assets (Yanying Gu; Lo, A.; Niemegeers, I, March 2009). RTLS utilizes readers that process the signals received and tags that determine the location of objects....

...Inventory Management By: Jared Farnsworth, LAT In the fall of two thousand two I was introduced to radio frequency identification or RFID while I was doing my advanced individual training (AIT) for the military in Fort Lee, Virginia. At this time RFID was still in its infancy and not too many people were using RFID at this time. Not really too much was known about the benefits that it provided for inventory management either. The military was in the beginning stages of development and found it useful to link all of the databases at every military installation to make inventory control that much more reliable. Throughout my career in the military I used the RFID system quite a bit, mainly for inventory management. I used it for the control of medical equipment for the Army hospital that I was attached to. Everything had to be documented since all the supplies were highly vital to the proper running of the hospital. Other uses for the RFID system are for loss prevention, tracking inventory replenishment, managing work-in progress, and the removal of production waste through lean management. However certain problems do exist with the RFID system such as misuses and privacy issues. Over the next few paragraphs the benefits and problems with the RFID system will be discussed. “Theft and loss prevention and price markdown management are two of the most promising uses for radio frequency identification technologies deployed at...

...I think that the subject of RFID is very interesting. I believe the application is what the “fuss” should be over. I think using RFID to track cows, so if they wander off, the farmer can find them again is an outstanding application of RFID. The same goes RFIDs in hospital bracelets on newborns to prevent the unauthorized removal of the baby from the hospital. (Both my kids had them in their bracelets). But what I feel is concerning is that we live in an age of “me, me, me” “now, now, now”, and we want to put this technology into everything. And as justification, we say “it will make my life easier”. Really? Was it really that hard to swipe a credit card? Apparently so, because all we have to do now is tap them. What about product tracking? Companies are interested in this technology to track their products from purchase to trash. A container of milk containing an RFID tag is picked up at a grocery store. The expiration date can be automatically sent to your cell phone. Instead of standing in line to check out, you can just walk past a tag reader. This can calculate the total of your purchase and send the bill directly to your bank. In addition, the manufacturer of the product can be notified to ship more products to the store, and the store can be notified of the empty space on its shelf. Once home, and you put your milk into your “smart refrigerator”. This can track your usage, and when you empty the container, you can have messages sent to remind you to buy more milk, or...

...new technologies such as social networking, biometric technology, RFID, and cloud networks have completely changes the way companies operate. They have redefined and replaced older technologies and have managed to do so at a rapid pace. If companies do not set themselves up with flexibility to implement new technologies they will soon be out of business. Cloud networks have become increasingly popular due to the cost savings and effectiveness of their design. A company is able to save money by not having the overhead and staff to maintain and service their own servers. I think that this type of network will soon become a standard business model for all companies. As the security features continue to advance, the cost savings provided by the cloud will be too great to pass up. The cloud has also contributed to the rise in another type of network, the social network. The increasing popularity of social websites such as Facebook and Twitter has spawned new ways to market and advertise. The traditional forms of advertising are slowly being phased out and being replaced by more direct advertising based on the information a user provides to their social networking site. The ability to capture and use this information as well as the ability to adapt to new social network sites will be a pivotal quality in successful business in the future. Another technology that is evolving rapidly is RFID. With new RFID technologies business in the future will be able completely change...

...Wal-Mart, a leader in innovation in the retail industry has already adopted this comprehensive technology. The challenge I may face by retailers and suppliers is to develop an inventory notification system that incorporates RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology at its best. I will fill this gap by providing a solution using Radio Frequency Identification tags to keep track of products on store shelves, in inventory, and products that are bought. The system will feature radio frequency identification tags and readers. Readers will be located in the storage room and at the point-of-sale terminals. I will be focusing the project on software development and will outsource the supply of RF tags and readers. I propose a way to give more control to the end user by building a notification system with multiple types of alerts that allows the user to control which applications notifications are used for each alert. This will help create adaptive rules for rating the importance and urgency of inventory to determine which notifications a user wants to see. On the other hand, a computerized inventory and monitoring of a company is needed to save time and money. My project aims to design and develop management software that will incorporate RFID technology. My project will also enable store management to know the current status of products on the shelves, what is selling, and what is in the stockroom. Features of the software will include notifying users of empty shelves...

...How Walmart Uses E-commerce in Its Supply Chain In 2011, Walmart’s sales amounted to $419 billion and were ranked first in Fortune 500’s list of world’s largest companies by revenue. (Walmart 2011). What contributed to Walmart’s success? With heavy investment into their supply chain management system it has enable them to reduce overall costs, minimize inventory levels, and optimize logistics and distribution thus making them more successful. Analysis will be made as to why Walmart is concentrating on supply chain projects, why some suppliers are not in compliance with mandatory RFID tags, and how e-commerce improves transaction processing. Why Walmart is Concentrating on Supply Chain Projects Walmart is investing heavily in projects to constantly improve their supply chain which will allow them to lower overall costs and increases profit margin. An illustration of this is that prior to the efforts on supply chain management in 2002, on sales of $218B, they generated a return of 3%. In 2011, their profit margin increased to 6.1% while doubling revenue. By constantly upgrading the management of product through the various distribution channels and the process in which consumers receive products, time and money can be saved by Walmart which in turn benefits the consumer. In order for Walmart to remain successful on a global level, being competitive is the key. To be competitive in the “front of the house”, they must remain competitive in the “back of the house”. ...

...RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. The job of RFID system is primarily the same one that barcodes perform today, to store and provide information about a product, a pallet of goods or entire inventories. RFID systems are, however, far superior to barcodes. For example, they can process several products at once without any direct contact. And RFID tag consists of a microchip which contains a small antenna. The antenna transmits information can be stored on the microchip than on a barcode label – up to several kilobytes. The key benefit of RFID is that data no longer has to be laboriously processed using scanners. Instead this can all be done through radio transmissions, fast and at a distance. While barcodes always need to be read separately, RFID chips can be read “in bulk”, which saves time. In warehousing logistics, for example, a stock inventory can be generated at the push of a button. The possibilities for RFID in logistics are endless opening up completely new opportunities for the sector. Smart Medication: Many products have to be kept chilled during transport such as foodstuffs, liquid medication and cosmetics. An RFID sensor tag developed in the DHL innovation center and fitted with temperature sensors monitors the goods and their temperature during the entire transport process. Reading can be taken at every point of processing. Shippers, recipients or controllers can check on the condition of the products without having to open the shipment. Moreover...

...INTERNET OF THINGS Introduction: The next wave in the era of computing will be outside the realm of the traditional desktop. In the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, many of the objects that surround us will be on the network in one form or another. Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) and sensor network technologies will rise to meet this new challenge, in which information and communication systems are invisibly embedded in the environment around us. This results in the generation of enormous amounts of data which have to be stored, processed and presented in a seamless, efficient, and easily interpretable form. This model will consist of services that are commodities and delivered in a manner similar to traditional commodities. Cloud computing can provide the virtual infrastructure for such utility computing which integrates monitoring devices, storage devices, analytics tools, visualization platforms and client delivery. The cost based model that Cloud computing offers will enable end-to-end service provisioning for businesses and users to access applications on demand from anywhere. Smart connectivity with existing networks and context-aware computation using network resources is an indispensable part of IoT. With the growing presence of WiFi and 4G-LTE wireless Internet access, the evolution towards ubiquitous information and communication networks is already evident. However, for the Internet of Things vision to successfully...
