Mark Edmundson's excerpt from "Education's Hungry Hearts," mentions how "having a hungry heart" makes all the difference for educators to feel passion for their choice of career. A "hungry heart" not only defines a student's eagerness to learn and greed for knowledge, it also represents a teacher's desire to change the attitude of his or her pupils. The most attention is not given to those who speak of interesting subjects with tones void of any emotion, but to those who view the most trivial matters with more passion than any other can. The reason that makes Edmundson's view on having a "hungry heart" make "all the difference for a young person seeking an education" so agreeable is perhaps the most ironic of all. As the society gets more and more caught up with the advancements of technology, science, and education, knowledge becomes something less of which people are hungry for, as it makes way for a new generation of mandatory, test-driven learning. …show more content…
It is as if learning is second to scoring high on a short term memorization exam. How can an individual be infatuated with gaining more knowledge if the process to learning only involve impractical information that they will not need in life. Up until the time that I enter secondary education, going to school is an enjoyable experience that stirs up a fire to learn within me, the “hungry heart” to know more about the science of this world, about art and literature, about the history of our earth. And the same enthusiasm and energy will also make the process meaningful the teachers educating the crowd of students. Even with toddlers, the same eagerness to learn about their environment helps motivate the parents and teachers to pass on the knowledge that they receive when they were
