This threats demanded to be exterminated so that Hitler could procure support from the army which feared an intervention with the SA. With the occurrence of the Night of Long Knives, Hitler was also able to convert the SA into the SS, also known as Blackshirts, a german police/ military organization conceived to serve as the personal bodyguards of Adolf Hitler. This forceful act can mainly be seen as significant because it eliminated many political threats to Hitler and Nazi Germany as a whole. It gave stability to the army that dreaded an attack from Rhom. It degenerated the power of the SA and gave the Nazis absolute power over the laws of Germany and gave support to the brutal SS. Another event that could be argued of being as significant as the reichstag fire, was the failure of the Weimar Republic. The government failed in a way which struck Germany and provided a breakthrough for the Nazis. This failure was vivid proof that a democratic government did not manage to maintain Germany and it also failed to deal with the great depression of 1929. This left many germans desperate and unemployed, many of them believed Germany needed a stronger and more efficient government, making them turn to the Nazis.
