However, not all burhs were public, especially in Wales, were the archaeology reveals a number of forts with private defences and accommodation. One example of this is Rhuddlon, were only four structures were found, three of which were grubenhauses (Quinell, Blackley and Berridge, 1994; 211). Due to the lack of structures it seems plausible that it was a private fortification. This is confirmed with the belief that castles were the private structures. However as already mentioned this was not necessary the case. Nevertheless, the archaeological evidence from Rhuddlon is limited due to the lack of knowledge if the fortifications would be used for the people inside, or like the Wessex burhs, was a place of safety for a number of people living
