In his memoir, Chung delves into the pasts of his parents, who were of Chinese descent, yet were raised in Vietnam. From the colonization of France, through the invasion of the Japanese, to the rising communist wave which crashed upon South Vietnam, the upbringings of Vinh’s parents were marked by hardship, perseverance, success, and family, which enabled them to sustain themselves throughout the various warring stages within Vietnam. Vinh’s father, Thanh, along with his brother and Grandmother Chung, were left in poverty after the death of Vinh’s grandfather. Despite this difficulty, they were determined to overcome this state of life by creating a rice-milling business named Peace, Unity, Profit. ...RICE AND BULLETS Hernando R. Ocampo Without taking his breakfast, Tura left the house very early in the morning with an old jute sack slung across his shoulder. Long ago the sack had contained rice for his family—for his daughters Ine and Clara, for his little son Totoy, and for his wife Marta. But now the jute sack was bulging with the sharp, hard edges of three big stones which he had gathered the night before. "What are those stones for"? Marta asked. "Mister Remulla said we must have three big stones in our sack. He said these stones would represent the three biggest islands in our country," Tura explained. "What are you going to do with them?" Marta asked. "I don't know," Tura answered, seemingly peeved. “Mister Remulla said that with these stones we'll soon have something to eat, and that is all I care about. He told us we ought not to be hungry. We have as much right to eat and live as the proprietarious have." Marta had ceased to ask further questions. At the mention of rice she had suddenly seemed satisfied. But this morning, before Tura left, she asked again, "Are you sure there will be no trouble?" "How could there be? Mister Remulla knows what he is doing. He said that is what they do in America. He came from America. He ought to know." And slinging the jute sack with the big stones across his shoulder, Tura left his wife on the threshold, while his three children, ill-clad and ill-nourished, looked sheepishly on. Out in the street Tura wondered how things...

...Biology 160 Term Paper Genetically Modified Organisms INTRODUCTION There is a lot of controversy surrounding genetically-modified organisms and whether they ultimately do more harm than good. Genetically-modified organisms are most commonly used to refer to “crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques” (Whitman). The goal of modifying these organisms is to enhance or introduce a desired trait, such as increased resistance to herbicides or improving the nutritional content of the particular organism. This is generally done in a lab using a “Gene Gun” or an Agrobacterium method as described in detail in the next section. However, as convenient and simple as this idea sounds, there are many concerns that will more than likely change the course of future modifications in organisms. First, I'll be describing the methods used to date to modify the genetic composition of an organism. Then, I'll be highlighting the benefits and the potential consequences of genetically-modifying organisms. SCIENCE BEHIND GMO'S Upon researching, I discovered an interesting fact about genetically modified organism's: it has apparently occurred in nature for millions of years through a species called Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which turns out is the cause of crown gall diseases in many ornamental and fruit plants (Keefer). Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a species of soil-dwelling bacteria that has the ability to infect plant cells with a piece of...

...America Today By: The most important achievements of African-American civil rights movements have been the post-Civil War constitutional amendments that abolished slavery and established the citizenship status of blacks, and the judicial decisions and legislation based on these amendments, notably the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision of 1954, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. These legal changes greatly affected the opportunities available to women, nonblack minorities, disabled individuals, and other victims of discrimination. The Brown decision demonstrated that the litigation strategy of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) could undermine the legal foundations of southern segregationist practices, but the strategy worked only when blacks, acting individually or in small groups, assumed the risks associated with crossing racial barriers. Thus, even after the Supreme Court declared that public school segregation was unconstitutional, black activism was necessary to compel the federal government to implement the decision and extend its principles to all areas of public life rather than simply in schools. The initial phase of the black protest activity in the post-Brown period began on December 1, 1955. Rosa Parks of Montgomery, Alabama, refused to give up her seat to a white bus rider, thereby defying a southern custom that required blacks to give seats toward the front of buses...

...scenario of genetically modified foods has many different parameters. These parameters include ethical, religious, legal and environmental ramifications. It would be equally as irrational to say that genetically modified foods were more or less dangerous than they were beneficial. The perspective to the scenario should be taken on both micro and macro levels, and to perceive their effects in the most open-minded scenarios as possible. Much of the rhetoric against genetically modified foods focuses on a fraction of what they entail; while, perhaps, leaving out economic models that suggest fewer alternatives. A great example that sets the playing field for genetically modified foods is the nutrition shortage in Southeast Asia. In this region, rice is the...

...Evaluation on pasta When I cooked my pasta I forgot some of my ingredients therefore I had to use my initiative and cooked it the way that I thought would be best to complement all the ingredients that I had brought with me in the end it all turned out alright this is reflected in the star profiles of when other people tasted it. Next time I cook it I might add either tuna or meatballs this will enhance the flavours and also give it more depth taste wise. When I was presenting my pasta I put them in the middle of my plate and arranged them so that they were in a square in the middle, after that I got a piece of tissue and wiped the edges of the plate where there was some sauce. I did this so that my dish looked professional and more appealing to the eye. In the lesson I had set my self a time frame so that I would have enough time to clean the dishes. My time frame was thirty minutes which I abided by and ended up finishing 15 minutes early which was a strength because I got more time to finish cleaning up my area. The recipe was easy to follow because the steps were clear and easy to read this is because the language used in the text was not too formal. When other people tasted my food they complemented me on the use of Italian herbs, I got no criticism, which I was pleased with. I would say that some of my strengths were that I used my initiative and used the ingredients that I had and I did not let forgetting some of the ingredients affect the final product (pasta dish). ...The Ballot or the Bullet by Malcolm X April 3, 1964 Cleveland, Ohio Mr. Moderator, Brother Lomax, brothers and sisters, friends and enemies: I just can't believe everyone in here is a friend, and I don't want to leave anybody out. The question tonight, as I understand it, is "The Negro Revolt, and Where Do We Go From Here?" or What Next?" In 4my little humble way of understanding it, it points toward either the ballot or the bullet. Before we try and explain what is meant by the ballot or the bullet, I would like to clarify something concerning myself. I'm still a Muslim; my religion is still Islam. That's my personal belief. Just as Adam Clayton Powell is a Christian minister who heads the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York, but at the same time takes part in the political struggles to try and bring about rights to the black people in this country; and Dr. Martin Luther King is a Christian minister down in Atlanta, Georgia, who heads another organization fighting for the civil rights of black people in this country; and Reverend Galamison, I guess you've heard of him, is another Christian minister in New York who has been deeply involved in the school boycotts to eliminate segregated education; well, I myself am a minister, not a Christian minister, but a Muslim minister; and I believe in action 15 on all fronts by whatever means necessary.Skaber autoritet da han er en præst ligesom alle de andre frohedskæmpere, dog ikke Kristen, men dette har ingen indflydelse – vil...

...When Japan is mentioned, the first picture painted in ones mind is the look of the ancient temples, a mountainous terrain covered in mist, bullet trains among other famous features. These are among the unique aspects that are synonymous with the Asian nation that today is one of the leading economies in the world. Like other countries however, Japan has its history and the general information that one has to take a detailed look at in order to understand the nation well. Japan is an island nation that lies in the eastern side of Asia continent in the Pacific Ocean. It neighbors countries like China, North Korea, South Korea, and Russia which are to the east of Japan, while on the south it borders Taiwan. Japan stretches from Sea of Okhotsk in the north towards south up to the East China Sea forming a chain cluster of islands those total up to 6,852 islands that together are known as the Japanese Archipelago. Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku are the four largest islands in the mountainous nation of Japan accounting for around twenty seven percent of the whole land area. In total, Japan sits on 377,915 square kilometers with land forming 364,485 sq km and water occupying the rest 13,430 sq km. Comparing the area occupied by the whole of Japan to an equivalent in the U.S, it is said to be slightly smaller in size than the state of California. This island nation has a relatively long coast line that stretches for 29,751 km. Legendary stories trace the creation of the nation...

...goods. Indian companies competing with British companies were also prohibited, and Indian companies, such as cotton textiles, were controlled by Britain (Beck, 358). The British East India Company bought raw materials for cheap prices, and then later sold the finished products for more. Local farmers were forced to grow cash crops, like indigo and rice, instead of food crops they needed to feed their families. This resulted in many people dying from famine (Smith, 57). While Britain’s economy flourished, India’s suffered. India was both negatively and positively affected socially by imperialism. Indians, who were mostly Hindu or Muslim, were angry for being forced to convert to Christianity. Also their system of agriculture was disrupted from being forced to grow cash crops. Indian families used to be self-sufficient when they grew their own food, however, the production of cash crops took away their self-sufficiency and significantly reduced food production (Smith, 57). Indian traditions and culture were not respected. One example of this was the cause of the Sepoy Mutiny. Britain had been using pork and beef fat to grease the bullet cartridges sepoys were using. Cows and pigs were considered sacred animals to Hindus and Muslims, which most of the sepoys were (Sarah, 2). On the other hand, Indian daily life was also improved by imperialism. India was modernized with new technologies like railroads, telegraph and telephone lines, bridges, dams, and irrigation canals (Schroeder...

... personal gain and notoriety. This essay will consider both points of view relating to how it affects the human lives and what effect it has on the society. Idi Amin was best known for his brutal regime and crimes against humanity while in power as President of Uganda from 1971-1979. In his time as leader he sent out killing squads to hunt down and murder those opposed to his views, which included people from every order and rank, including journalists, lawyers, homosexuals and students. He also expelled all Asians from Uganda in 1972. He then soon became known as the “Butcher of Uganda” for his brutality. It is believed that 300,000 people were killed during his presidency. He was once known to of said “You cannot run faster than a bullet” and this just is an example of his evil mind. A further example of a leader using he’s powers in a fatal grievous manner was Kim Jong-IL who was a dictator from North Korea who starved and tortured his people. 200,000 prisoners were held in labour camps, when they were too weak to work as they had been starved, he would either torture drawn or dissect them, if they were lucky they would be shot or gassed. He kept the camps well hidden, when people arrived at the camps if you had a deformity or amputation or a baby he would have them injected with liquid to make them swell up and endure a painful death, the babies were buried alive facedown to suffocate. He spent all his countries money on his Military Enrichment Program...
