Rigs vandring 1. Hvem er Rig?
Heimdal var en mand der begav sig ud på vandring og kaldte sig Rig. 2. Gengiv kort handlingen i digtet i gruppen.

...different communities will face when BP (British Petroleum) are operating near them. To begin with, I will first of all be examining the ethical concerns of the communities in which a selected business operates (P4); the company that I have chosen for this last task is BP.plc. On the 20th of April, 2010, the oil rig known as Deep-water Horizon had a major malfunction which caused a blowout; a blowout being a combination of mud, oil natural gas and water erupting from the well which then would surge up the drill pipe which when it met the surface, caused it to ignite and thus setting of an explosion – causing what happened in the picture below. The oil rig did have blowout preventers but both the manual and automatic blowout preventers failed to deploy; this being due to BOP’s having a history of failing. It has been stated that earlier that year that a couple of blowout valves had ruptured and broken down on reportedly 14 other oil rigs. Although the BOP’s are a 640,000 pound steel plate that is fixture on top of the well mouth, which can use over onemillion pounds of force to block violent emissions, it appears that this is not enough to protect oil rigs from blowouts that will cause devastating damage. As a result of this explosion, not only did 11 employees lose their life during the Deep-water Horizon blowout but it also caused millions of gallons of oil to be spilt into the surrounding environment (with 5,000 barrels worth of oil flowing into the sea with...

Bp Debate

...On April 20, 2010 there was an explosion in the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico which caused the rig to sink and the death of 11 people. The explosion also broke a BP oil pipe which leaked oil and gas into the water about 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The pipe was about 5000 feet bellow the ocean’s surface and leaked an estimated 4.9 million barrels (about 200 gallons) into the water; this was the largest accidental oil spill that has ever occurred. The oil quickly spread; some of it caused oil slicks on the surface which can be spread over long distances by pushing winds while some of it hovered in the middle of the water, just above the pipe. One oil plume was reported to be 22 miles long. This plume was formed because chemical dispersants (which were supposed to break up the oil) mixed with seawater and the oil and allowed the oil to stay suspended above the surface. As much as 20 percent of the oil ended up on the sea floor which caused damage to coral and other organisms below the surface. Some effects the spill had on the Gulf were immediately noticeable to the naked eye; pelicans cover in oil, dead fish floating in brown smudge, smothered turtles washing up on shore. Large amounts of both dolphins and turtles became ill and stranded after the accident. Originally it seemed that the only effected birds were seabirds because even tiny amounts of oil on their feathers hindered their ability to fly, swim, and find food by diving. However, it has been...

Chilean Mining Minister, Laurence Golborne, who had accompanied President, Sebastian Pinera, on a state visit to Quito, Ecuador, got the news at 11pm shortly after their arrival. Golborne informed the president the following morning and flew to Santiago via Peru on commercial flights then took a Chilean Air force flight to Copiapo before a 45-kilometre drive to the mine, arriving on August 7. Golborne, an engineer and entrepreneur, was recruited by the business friendly president who was inaugurated in March 2010 after success as Chief Executive of Censoud A, a large Chilean retail firm. Just 4 months in office with no mining background, Golborne took charge of a widely viewed disaster recovery effort. 69 days later, all 33 miners were rescued. Crew Foreman Luiz Urzua led the 33 trapped miners to form a small society to ration food, preserve morale, and protect their scarce resources. A surface team numbering...

Knowing Your Audience and Communication Bcomms/275

...Knowing Your Audience and Communication BCOMMS/275 The article Over 30 workers trapped after Chilean copper mine collapse by Weik, 2010 gave a poor accounting of the issue at hand. The flow of the article was poor, and the communication itself offered the copper miner families and employees of the company little information and no clear next steps. During times of emergency, clear and concise communications are critical. Companies should have communication plans in place to act swiftly and effectively in emergency situations. Crisis plans should be developed, ready for use when necessary. It is during these times that companies do not have the luxury to pour through materials and follow long procedures to act on the matter at hand (Woods, 2006) Effective communication is essential in the response and recovery phases of emergency management. It helps with decision making, assists in selecting from the various forms of communication, and identifies gaps in notification and response communications. Employers should communicate with their employees so they can respond in an accurate, professional, and timely manner. They need to know what to do, what steps need to be taken, and how to prioritize key functions (Woods, 2006) In the instance of the Chilean mine collapse, when disaster struck, both the family members of the miners and the employees of the...

After viewing a lot of Burtynskys projects it gets the viewer wanting to take a call of action. He is very effective at evoking emotion from the viewer through his work. This photograph Oil Fields #19ab by Edward Burtynsky, makes a lasting impression in our minds. It shows the significance of how the oil rigs or drillers take such a substantial toll on our land thus evoking strong emotions out of the viewer. Such an experience is an aesthetic experience. In this picture, Burtynsky captured the oil drillers from a broad spectrum. It makes an illusion as though they are endless. This was a better way to show the effect of oil than to capture a single oil drill. He was very smart the way he chose his form because it better depicts the content of which he wanted displayed. He did not just want to show an oil rig but rather the...

Deep Water in Deep Trouble

...environmental disasters, if not the worst, in U.S. history. When British Petroleum’s (BP) Deepwater Horizon off-shore rig-yung machine sa planta nagkukuha ng oil sa sea in the Gulf of Mexico exploded in a ball of flames on April 20, 2010, killing 11 employees, it set in motion frantic efforts to stop the flow of oil and to initiate the long and arduous cleanup process. Although the impacts of the explosion and oil spill were felt most intensely by businesses and residents along the coast and by coastal wildlife, those of us inland who watched the disaster unfold were also stunned and dismayed by what we saw happening. What led to this disaster and what can BP do to ensure that the likelihood of it ever happening again is minimized? One thing that has come to light in the disaster investigation is that it’s no surprise that something like this happened. After Hurricane Dennis blew through in July 2005, a passing ship was shocked to see BP’s new massive $1 billion Thunder Horse oil platform “listing precariously-hindi nasa ayos yung thunder horse oil platform to one side, looking for all the world as if it were about to sink.” Thunder Horse “was meant to be the company’s crowning glory, the embodiment of its bold gamble to outpace its competitors in finding and exploiting the vast reserves of oil beneath the waters of the gulf.” But the problems with this rig soon became evident. A valve installed backwards caused it to flood during the hurricane even before any oil had been...

...and at the Deepwater Horizon Drilling Rig in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The purpose of the case study is to provided analysis framework of the two cases and compare and contrast the root causes of the incidents and responses taken to the emergencies, the study will identify common themes and lessons learned from the incidents. In particular, issues relating to inherent safety of the design, operating procedures, human factors and the preparedness for protection of staff and emergency responders. Overview Both Buncefield & Deepwater Horizon fall within the oil and gas industry and the study identifies findings that are lacking within a multibillion dollar industry and which could and should have been prevented. Early in the morning of Sunday the 11th December 2005 an explosion, followed by a fire engulfed the Buncefield fuel storage depot, the fire was to turn out as Britain’s biggest peacetime blaze. Unleaded fuel was being pumped into one of the storage tanks on the site, safeguards on the tanks failed, none of the duty staff were aware that the capacity of the tank had been breached. The site is situated near the town of Hemel Hempstead, 25 miles northwest of London; it is sited in a residential and small industrial business area. The site and surrounding area was destroyed, there were casualties but no loss of life. On the 20th April 2010 a catastrophic explosion occurred and tore through the Deepwater Horrizon Drilling Rig, which at the time was operating in...

Bp Oil Spill

...Beijing No. 55 High School BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Investigation Subject: Geography Level: High (HL) Name: Stephanie Chinese: 姜智旻 Homeroom: 10-5 Word count: 1088 Student number: 4192 Supervisor: Craig Hamilton     On 20th of August 2010, the oil drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, operating in the Gulf of Mexico exploded then sunk resulting to 11 deaths. During the 87 days, about 4.9 billion barrels of oil had already spread. An estimation of 42,000 gallon of oil is oozing from underwater. From then 75,000km2 was not allowed for fishing.   Apparently, the blowout preventer device had bad managements and operations, and failed. Investigators said, “The problems with this blowout preventer were worse than we understood.” (Seth, 2014) In addition, investigators have stated that the cause of this explosion was because of the screw ups with cement, drilling mud, fluid pressure, mismanaged tests, and poor decisions. Therefore, this device should be improved so it doesn’t happen again. They have discovered that it has been the device operator’s fault in view of the fact that the blowout preventer hasn’t been tested accurately, there were problems in the wiring and dead batteries.  In order to clean the oil excess, they used powerful chemicals, which they don’t know the effects of on the environment. It was from 1.6km down to the bottom. After this cause, the British Petroleum (BP) went into investigation, negotiating with more than 50 expertise from within BP and industry....

...TYPES OF SOIL TEST IN-SITU TESTING TRIAL PITTING DYNAMICS PROBE TEST BOREHOLES IN-SITU TESTING In-situ testing techniques including Standard Penetration Testing, Permeability Testing, Borehole Vane Testing, Pressure meter Testing and Packer Testing can all be carried out in the boreholes in order to provide information for geotechnical design. Disturbed and undisturbed samples are retrieved from the boreholes for inspection and logging by engineers and subsequent testing in our laboratories. TRIAL PITTING Trial pitting can be carried out by a variety of methods from hand dug pits to machine excavated trenches. Trial pitting is generally carried out to a maximum depth of 4.5m with standard excavation plant and, depending on soil conditions, is generally suitable for most low rise developments. All trial pit investigations are supervised by experienced engineers with a thorough understanding of geology and soil mechanics. DYNAMICS PROBE TEST Cone Penetration Test To carried out the cone penetration test is pushed into a soil deposit while various measured parameters are recorded. The test is similar to the Dutch Deep sounding (or piezocone test) with the addition of a cone penetration element in the probe to measure water pressure. The test is also known as pore pressure sounding or CPTU. Mackintosh/JKR Probe Test This is a dynamic penetrometer test used to check the consistency of the subsoil. The organizations’ that had stake in the drilling operations were BP Exploration & Production Inc., (were the lease operator of Mississippi canyon block 252, contains Macondo Well), Trans-ocean (chief contractors), Halliburton, (responsible for cementing operations). 2). Should responsibility for the accident be shared among the organizations? Why or why not? Absolutely, there is a huge relationship between safety and production. Most organizations are practically interested in staying ahead of their competitors and making huge turn over, this is often seen in shift from safety of personnel and environment to a more profit oriented goal. Hazards or risk as regards to safety of personals, equipment or environments while producing Should be reduced as reasonably practice in a work environment by planning. 3). “what is more important than safety”? Why is safety so important? Safety is the utmost impertinence for any organization, over the years in almost every industry involving production of any sort, where safety regulations, procedures and processes have to be followed, there has been a perceived conflict between safety and production. ...The BP Oil Spill, which is also called the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and the Macondo blowout, started on April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. It happened when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded due to methane gas that escaped from the well and caused a blowout. After the rig sank, the oil gusher located on the sea floor pumped up oil for 87 days until July 15, 2010, when a new oil well cap was installed and halted the flow. The BP Oil Spill is considered to be the largest accidental marine oil spill in history. According to a report by the U.S. government, the oil spill resulted to the release of 4.9 million barrels of oil (equivalent to 210 million U.S. gallons). Bp Oil Spill

...Spill Case Introduction and Background This particular case study created an abundance of unanswered questions for me to consider and made me realize how poorly we are at regulating industries that continue to deplete our natural resources and yet don’t even prepare for when disasters strikes. The details of this case are alarming for a number of reasons and the most critical point that resonates throughout the entire paper, is that profit margins exceed any other concerns, to the point that even death could not convince them to make the changes to their company culture. The cycle of errors came to a complete pause, on the evening of April 20, 2010 when a “serious of explosions rocked the Deepwater Horizon, a mobile offshore drilling rig operated by BP in the Gulf of Mexico” according to (Roberto Pg.1) and one that saw a serious of catastrophically events, that would change the lives of many. That fateful night under the cover of darkness, eleven people died and several other encountered injuries that required medical attention and rescue. This occurred as direct fault of equipment, when the blowout preventer failed. The device is designed to “seal the well in case of an emergency” according to (Roberto Pg.1) and this caused for the oil spill that left many scrambling for their lives. The flames were so intense, they could be seen, by other ships located in the Gulf and they estimate the flames to be in the vicinity of at least 250 feet in the air. Their were many opportunities...
