Robyn Rihanna Fenty (born February 20, 1988), known by her stage name Rihanna is a Barbadian recording artist, actress and fashion designer. She lived the life of a normal island girl going to Combermere, a top sixth form school. Rihanna won numerous beauty pageants and performed Mariah Carey "Hero" in a school talent show. Her life changed forever when one of her friends introduced her to Evan Rodgers, a producer from New York who was in Barbados for a vacation with his wife, who is a native. Rodgers arranged for her to go to New York to meet Jay-Z, CEO of Def Jam Records. He heard her sing and knew she was going to be incredibly successful. She was 16 when she was signed to Def Jam. Since then, she's amassed phenomenal success. After watching Rihanna’s 2013 Grammy performance of her hit song ‘Stay’ it led me to conclude that Rihanna has a Strong personality, an assumption which is based off the application of Evolutionary psychology and Existential psychology concepts. As she sang, the audience could feel her raw emotion, it didn’t feel rehearsed it felt real, which was only suitable since the song can be seen as a representation of the current dilemma she currently faces in her love life with ex lover Chris Brown.
Existential Psychology is the study of human existence, however Rollo May focuses on concepts like freedom, responsibility, Authenticity, Death, courage, anxiety, destiny, dasein , daimonic , etc. All of which can be found in the traces of rihanna’s personality that is made visible to us. It is stated that the most important attribute of humans is freedom of choice. In the words of Sartre “Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself, such is the first principle of existentialism” (1957, p.15). Along with this freedom to become whatever type of person we choose, we must assume full responsibility for what we become or what happens to us. So when analysing the decision rihanna made to take back Chris brown after he abused her, was ultimately her choice and she will have to bear the consequences of this decision, be them good or bad.
Because some people may look to rihanna as a role model of young girls, they do not support her decision to get back together with her abuser, the love of her life, Chris brown. But in spite of all that rihanna still continues to rebuild her relationship with him. This is what Rollo May would referred to as Authenticity. If a person exercises their free will to expand consciousness further, to establish values that minimize anxiety and provide positive relationships with fellow humans, and to create the challenges necessary for personal growth, then they are said to be living an authentic life. But if however, a person lives in accordance with someone else’s values and does not exercise his or her free will to enhance personal growth and effective living, the person is said to be living an inauthentic life. [ (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2011) ]. To live an authentic life takes courage, because this life involves taking risk. There was a risk involved when Rihanna decided to go public about her true feelings towards Chris Brown which she did in an interview with the even popular Oprah Winfrey. Moreover existentialist emphasizes Death, to which May declares “to grasp what it means to exist, one needs to grasp the fact that he might not exist”. People die symbolically, by degrees, each time one of their established values is threatened. Such a threat is perceived as an attack on one’s existence and therefore it too causes anxiety. [ (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2011) ]. By making her decision public, rihanna’s music career could’ve suffered or died, which ultimately will result in her feeling anxiety before she did the interview, but in the mist of all that, she found the courage to override this anxiety and go onto living her authentic life.
Rollo May defined Destiny as “the patterns of limits and talents that constitutes the ‘givens’ of life” (1981, p.89), these refer to the things we have no control over like; where we were born, our sex, our parents, skin colour, talents, intelligence etc. Although we had no control over these givens we still have a freedom to choose how we want to use them. For example Rihanna was born in Barbados with the ability to sing and perform, in Barbados it is only thus far a person can reach in the entertainment industry, however she did not let that stop her, she choose to use her talents to the best of her ability and now she is one of the biggest stars in the world. She even said this is one of her songs off her new album. In it she confesses “Mother Mary I swear I wanna change, Mister Jesus I’d love to be your queen, but I’m from the left side of an island, never thought so many people will even know my name.”
In the mist of this one question reoccurs, “What does she see in him?”. This question can be answered by David Buss and his Evolutionary psychology theory, in terms of mate selection. Evolutionist believe that the main goal of human behaviour is too pass on of genes, therefore according to genetic similarity theory, we seek out mates that are genetically similar to us so that if an offspring is produced our gene pool will live on. Chris Brown and Rihanna are the same complexion, they are both good looking and slim built. It is said that women choose their mates on the ability to provide for them and their offspring, as you can see Chris Brown would fall into that category as he has a successful career. Men however view women as sex object and choose their mate on their ability to reproduce, and physical attractiveness. Rihanna was recently crowned the sexiest woman alive by Esquire Magazine, and she is at the top of every man’s wish list.
Let’s retract for a minute to the incident in 2009, when an argument between the couple resulted in rihanna being left bloodied and battered and Chris Brown having to be brought in front a court of law. According to Buss, jealousy is an evolutionary adaptation that protects long term relationships. Buss recognizes that they are occasions when jealousy motivates abuse, violence or even murder but he contends that jealousy evolved as a means of protecting a long term mating arrangement [ (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2011) ]. Women get jealous if they assume their spouse has another emotional attachment to someone else, they see this as a threat to their financial stability, if was alleged that on the night of the incident Rihanna confronted Chris about having relations with another women. Now fast forwarding to 2012 there was another incident in a night club where Chris Brown and Drake as well as their entourages got into a brawl, allegedly over Rihanna, due to the fact that Drake briefly dated rihanna after she broke up with Chris. It is said that men get jealous when they imagine their spouse having sex with someone else, thus is it clear as to why Chris responded the way he did that night in the club.

The Carpenter's Wife - a Critical Essay

... She wears highly decorative clothing of embroidered silk rather than a more practical linen or wool. Even her purse, an object that only has to carry belongings, is decorated with silk tassels and “perled with latoun” (line 143). The apron she wears at first suggests some sense of practicality, as she does not want to dirty the clothes beneath it, but it is described as “whit as morne milk” (line 128), which shows the opposite: that this is another ornamental object that is as unsoiled as the rest of her clothing. The unstained white of her apron and undergarments give her the outward appearance of purity, while the reader knows that internally she is far from pure. Following the account of Alison's clothing comes a brief personality description. Rather...

Communication and Collaboration Strategy Paper

...To learn about communication and being able to work with other people, you should learn each person’s learning style and personality style. There are three different learning styles: visual learners, auditory learners, and tactile/kinesthetic learners. To better understand each style we will look more closely at each individual sytle. First, lets look at visual learners. Visual learners learn best through seeing. Visual learners learn best by seeing facial expressions and by seeing body language. They also tend to sit in the front of classrooms or meetings to avoid distractions (example: people’s bodies blocking their views). Visual learners do better when they have displays they can see (example: videos, illustrated textbooks, and handouts). Visual learners usually take very detailed notes during lectures or discussions. This way they are able to take in and remember more information. The second type of learning style is auditory learners. Auditory learners learn best through listening. Auditory learners tend to talk things through, listen to lectures, listening to what other people say, and verbal discussions. Because they learn through listening, written information does not help them until it is voiced out loud. They also tend to use a tape recorder during lectures so that they can re-play the tape later and better absorb the information. The third type of learning style is tactile/kinesthetic learners. Tactile/kinesthetic learners learn best through touching, moving...

... If he chooses Sarah, he may not be able to have her because of the way that she feels. Although Macon still feels connected to Sarah, he is more compatible with Muriel. Sarah is arguably much more normal than Macon, depending on which definition of normal is used. Sarah is more of a team player than Macon is. Macon keeps to his systems, while Sarah wants them to make decisions together. “What harm would it do to wait it out? You’d be showing some concern. You’d be telling me we’re in this together” (4). Macon replies, “I’ve got a system, Sarah. You know I drive according to a system” (4). She can come off as being over dramatic at times, and somewhat annoying, but that could possibly be because we are used to Macon’s mundane personality. Macon still feels that he might in some way be responsible for his son’s death. Sarah tries to convince him that he is not. She does not support his...

Public Relations Profession

...Laurie Ewart J3400 Reflection Paper #1 9/18/13 Secondary Research-Chapter 5 As public relations professional, research would be one of the most important aspects of your career. Research should be your first step before launching a new product or marketing plan. If you fail to do the research first, you risk wasting a great deal of time and money on your project. Researching your target marketing is a huge benefit. Secondary research is essentially a summary of data that has already been collected. If you have a question to answer you can easily access the data and analyze it in order to get the answer you are looking for. This is opposed to primary data, which you would have to conduct new research to get the information you need. While secondary research seems to take much less effort, it still had its advantages and disadvantages. One of the main advantages to secondary research is that it is cost and time effective. Since you will not have to conduct the research you would have very little money and time in simply accessing the data from another source. The amount of time you would save by not conducting research you can now spend on analyzing data or any other areas of your plan that it is needed. Another advantage to secondary research is that you have several different sources that you can utilize to find your data. There are many websites that offer this type of information. One of the largest drawbacks of secondary research is that the results are usually...

Written Research

...Summary of a Research Article Dasani Smith Psychology, 100 Professor Smith February 5, 2012 Written Summary of a Research Article Early childhood professionals have individual preferences about how they like children to behave (Eddowes, Aldridge, & Culpepper, 1994). Early childhood professionals also play a critical role in helping children accept themselves as unique (Aldridge, 1993). While students preparing to work with young children learn about cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development, they often neglect to study personality development (Aldridge & Cowles, 1990). The study of personality is important because a child's temperament influences the teacher more than the child's intelligence (Lerner & Lerner, 1986). In fact, teachers often give grades and implement classroom management strategies based upon specific children's temperaments (Pullis & Cadwell, 1982). Temperament is the part of the personality with which each child is born. According to Chess and Thomas (1987) temperament refers to individual differences in physiological responsiveness. It includes the characteristic way that an individual responds emotionally to people and objects. Chess and Thomas (1977) found nine temperament categories which they believed were present at birth. These categories include the following: Activity Level. Does the child display mostly active or inactive stress? Rhythm city or Regularity. Is the child predictable or unpredictable regarding sleeping...

Friend

...To everybody, friend plays an important part in our life, so topics which involve in friend become more and more common. There is a debate that whether people who have different interests and personalities cannot be friend. From my perspective, I agree that people should make friend with the people who have same interests and personalities. The first reason why I hold this view is that it must be easier for two people to communicate with each other when they have same interests and personalities. On one hand people always focus on what they are interested in, so they will catch all opportunities to understand it, including communication, on the other hand, the chat with tow people who have same interests and personalities can avoid the embarrassment of silent. I will take an example of myself. Once I went out with tow friends, one has the same interests and personalities to me, while the other has diverse interests and personalities from us. From my own feeling, I would like to talk with the former one better. Another aspect can never be ignore is that it is possible for two people with diverse interests and personalities to produce divergence and contradiction. In other words, two people with different interests and personalities may have two ideas to same things, so when they stand in an opposite opinion, their friendship perhaps confront with a big challenge, and this challenge possesses destructiveness. It is really possible to cause their friendship to be end. There...

Theorists had endeavored for a long time realizing further theoretical methodology. Gordon Allport researched the personalities of people for the reason that that methodology provide further meaning or characterization to individual distinctiveness and give emphasis to the distinctiveness of the person (Feist & Feist, 2009). ...THE RISE AND FALL OF CARLY FIORINA For a long time, Carleton S. (‘Carly’) Fiorina was one of the best-known CEO’s in the world. Brought in as Helwett-Packard’s (HP) CEO in 1999, Fiorina was instantly recognisable for her charisma, visibility and aggressiveness. Practically every OB book (including past editions of this one) featured her. She was even mentioned as a possible cabinet member of the Bush administration or a Senate candidate from California. Widely praised as a change agent and a visionary leader at Lucent Technologies-which she led before joining HP-Fiorina had a way of generating enthusiasm and excitement. Some called her a ‘rock star’ CEO. However, under Fiorina’s leadership, HP struggled as the world’s second largest computer company. Although revenue climbed steadily under her leadership, profit did not. Nor did the stock price-an investor who bought HP stock the day Fiorina was hired would have seen 55 per cent of the investment vanish by the time she was fired. Her acquisition of Compaq in 2002, which Walter Hawlett (son of the company’s co-founder and one of HP’s largest shareholders) was adamantly against, never paid off as promised. As a result of these struggles, the HP board tried to find a way to limit Fiorina’s powers and give more authority to other executives a month before her firing, Fiorina was told point-blank by three board members that she had to change her style. She adamantly refused. A month later, when informed of the board’s decision...

Keirsey Classic Temperament Report Analysis

...Keirsey Report Upon taking the Keirsey Classic Temperament Report, I was placed into the temperament category “Guardian”, with the subtype of “Supervisor(ESTJ)” The study went further into my personality type and found me to be extremely “Tough-Minded and Scheduled”, while finding me less “Friendly” than average. The other qualities were all approximately average. The temperament of “Guardian” implies that I likely possess traits of; dependability, hard work, strong work ethic, devotion, and more. The Subtype of “Supervisor” takes the traits of “Guardian” a step further and applies them to the career aspect of life. In theory, “Guardians” with the subtype, “Supervisor”, are highly social community minded people, and are likely to take charge in group situations. Often the optimal career lines for these individuals are that of management or administration in a social, political or business scenario. In my opinion, this survey has given a very accurate of my temperament at this point in time of my life. For me, this survey just re-enforced my own opinion of what traits I naturally demonstrate in life and my professional career so far. In situations where I have an interest, I usually assert myself and become a natural leader of the situation as well as assisting others in finding what skills or traits they possess that are of the highest value to the group effort. For example, I regularly play recreation paintball with some of my friends and the UNLV paintball club, and when...
