...SINGAPORE MASS RAPID TRANSIT: GOING OFF TRACK On January, 2012, Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Phaik Hwa Saw, resigned from her position after two major breakdowns on the North-South Line in December 2011. SMRT was a public transport operator in Singapore, with a transportation network that comprised buses, trains and taxis. The two breakdowns were arguably the largest public transportation incidents in Singapore’s history, occurring two days apart and affecting more than 220,000 commuters. Widespread public outrage ensued, with heavy criticism of Saw for the breakdowns and her mismanagement of the corporation. Prior to the incidents, Saw’s tenure as CEO had been associated with a particularly prosperous period in the history of SMRT. She had successfully navigated SMRT through its post-merger transition process and achieved a significant growth in profits. She had also transformed SMRT from a company focusing solely on transportation to one that provided all-around service and transportation to commuters. These viewpoints were elicited during face to face, structured interviews lasting between 1.5 to 3 hours. The industry are experiencing great uncertainty with respect to long-term goals especially if what is currently happening is unstable, uncertainties about the magnitude of jeepneys in the market, the cost and benefits, but stakeholders are willing to be involved in promoting the industry to its maximum potentials. There appear to be few articulated and carefully thought-out development strategies nor is there much evidence of internal business processes being reengineered to accommodate the requirements of jeepney presence. The civil aviation traffic has seen an unprecedented traffic in the past few years on account of booming Indian economy, growing tourism industry, entry of low cost carriers in the private sector, liberalization of international bi-lateral agreements and liberalization of civil aviation policy. In future also the civil aviation traffic is expected to grow at the same pace despite current slowdown due to global recession. But airport infrastructure has not kept pace with the growth of the civil aviation traffic. This has resulted in congestion and inefficient services in major airports, limited landing slots, inadequate parking bays and congestion during peak hours for airlines. Development of quality infrastructure will have an impact on international competitiveness and economic growth. This requires faster development of civil aviation infrastructure on public private partnership mode. In tune with the requirement many initiatives have already been started in the 10th five year plan and they are expected to continue in the 11th plan also. 2. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning.
