Many people debate over when Rome really started. Some say it started with Remus and Romulus, while others say it started when the republic formed and Julius Caesar was dictator. There’s even a few people that claim it started with the Etruscan rule. Today, I’m writing about one specific origin story- Romulus and Remus. They were brothers who, according to the myths, were wanted dead by the king of that time. The king’s name was Amulius. He overthrew his brother who was actually the king before him. The old king’s daughter was the mother of the twins, and the father was the god Mars. Amulius was worried the twins would overthrow him, so he ordered for them to be drowned in the Tibris river.. When Romulus and Remus grew up, the killed Amulius. The people wanted them to be the new kings, but they rejected the offer. They instead founded a tiny city on 7 rolling hills and It was in a peninsula. We now call that place Rome because it comes from the founder’s names. The rom part of Rome came from Romulus, and the e came from Remus. This is where the peace ends. The brothers started to argue about which hill to build their new city on. Remus wanted to build it on a hill called the Aventine Hill, while Romulus wanted to build it on the Palatine Hill. They then went to the gods for advice and asked for signs. Since Remus saw 6 birds, he claimed he won. But on the other hand, Romulus saw 12 birds and though he had won. This led to them bickering more and more constantly. Romulus suddenly started to build a wall around his hill. Everyday Remus would laugh and make fun of it, but Romulus kept on building. One day, Remus went too far.
