Risk Management in Banking Sector

...CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION 1. THEME OF THE STUDY Risk management underscores the fact that the survival of an organization depends heavily on its capabilities to anticipate and prepare for the change rather than just waiting for the change and react to it. The objective of risk management is not to prohibit or prevent risk taking activity, but to ensure that the risks are consciously taken with full knowledge, purpose and clear understanding so that it can be measured and mitigated. It also prevents an institution from suffering unacceptable loss causing an institution to suffer or materially damage its competitive position. Functions of risk management should actually be bank specific dictated by the size and quality of balance sheet, complexity of functions, technical/ professional manpower and the status of MIS in place in that bank. 1.2 INTRODUCTION Risk: the meaning of ‘Risk’ as per Webster’s comprehensive dictionary is “a chance of encountering harm or loss, hazard, danger” or “to expose to a chance of injury or loss”. Thus, something that has potential to cause harm or loss to one or more planned objectives is called Risk. The word risk is derived from an Italian word “Risicare” which means “To Dare”. It is an expression of danger of an adverse deviation in the actual result from any expected result. Banks for International Settlement (BIS) has defined it as- “Risk is the threat that an event or action will adversely affect an organization’s ability...

Foreign Exchange Risk Management in Banking Sector

...developed, Britain, as the nation with the largest and strongest navy, could spread its commercial interests far and wide. It therefore became the most active trading nation, with a vast empire of colonies. As a result, Britain’s currency, the pound sterling, became a benchmark to which other currencies were compared (and exchanged) for most of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.  Today, most currencies are compared to the U.S. Dollar, currently the most active and commercially strong trading nation; many currencies are still “pegged” to the U.S. Dollar for their exchange rate. Because FX risks can be identified, they can be managed. Foreign exchange management requires that governments, companies, and individuals understand the factors that influence the valuation of currency. By identifying these factors, they can enter into transactions that mitigate the risks to acceptable levels. These transactions, or hedge positions, are designed to maximize the economic benefit of foreign exchange receipts, and payments for governments, multinational companies, or individuals 1.1. Foreign Exchange Foreign Exchange (FX) is the conversion of currency of one country to the currency of other country whereas foreign currency is any currency other than the country’s own currency. 1.2. Foreign Exchange Market Foreign Exchange Market is a market where the...

Risk Management in Asia

...Risk Management in the Asian Banking Sector “What is the best strategy for the implementation of Enterprise Risk Management in the banking sector of the highly expansive but volatile Asian economy?” I chose to do an in-depth study of this area of risk management because as I am Australian, it is extremely important for me to start to fully understand the workings of our closest economic partner and the future of our economy which is driven by the expansive growth that is rolling through Asia. I was also intrigued into the steps needed to fully adopt a risk management system in an entity. It should be noted that the focus of this paper is on the developing region of South-East Asia and less on the more developed parts of Asia including China and Korea. Green Banking

...While green banking is not yet a key reason for most customers to select one financial institution over another, customer demands and greater environmental awareness are driving a number of financial institutions to go green. Environment is a key focus amongst ethical banks (in this field specially called sustainability or green banks) as well as amongst many conventional banks that wish to appear more ethically oriented or that see switching to more environmental practices to be to their advantage. In general bankers “consider themselves to be in a relatively environmentally friendly industry (in terms of emissions and pollution). However, given their potential exposure to risk, they have been surprisingly slow to examine the environmental performance of their clients. A stated reason for this is that such an examination would ‘require interference’ with a client’s activities. While the desire to not meddle in the business of the client is valid, one could also note that banks are required to interfere in the business of their clients regularly to ensure that the clients’ business plan is viable before issuing them a loan. The kind of analysis that all banks partake in is termed a single bottom line analysis (this analysis only considers financial performance). It is arguable whether or not performing a triple bottom line analysis (an analysis that takes into account environmental, social, and financial performance) would be any more intrusive in case of banking sector. As far...

Green Banking

...Administration Discipline Khulna University 4th November, 2013 Name of the proposed report: “Green Banking Initiative of Bangladesh bank and Compliance of the Commercial banks” (A Case study based on Khulna City) Introduction: Bangladesh is a country of enormous opportunities. After its liberation war, it has rapidly changed its economic status and in spite of so many obstacles, recently it has introduced itself as a middle income country. But now, along with other countries of the world, it is facing some problems like- global warming, excessive use of carbon-di-oxide and CFC gas, and also some other climatic change and all these are a great threat to our economy. The green banking concept is relatively new in Bangladesh and yet to get momentum. Actually green banking is nothing but the operations of the banking activities giving especial attention upon the social, ecological and environmental factors aiming at the conservation of nature and natural resources. Banks can be green through bringing changes in six main spheres of banking activities (Rahman, et al. 2013). Those are Change in Investment Management, Change in Deposit Management, Change in House Keeping, Change in the Process of Recruitment and Development of Human Capital, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and Making Consciousness Among Clients and General Mass (Rahman, et al. 2013). Green banking, as a concept, is proactive and smart way of thinking with a vision for future sustainability of our only...

...BANKING CHALLENGES IN THE 21ST CENTURY Dr. Muhammad Anwar Hassan, Vice Chancellor, Preston University, Mr. Muhammad Humayun Khan, Chief Manager, State Bank of Pakistan, SBP BSC (Bank) Peshawar, Mr. Rashid Qazi, Vice President, PICIC Commercial Bank Ltd. Peshawar, Mr. Badar Hussain, Area Head North, MCB Peshawar, Mr. Tabraiz Hassan Butt, Regional Business/Operational Chief Peshawar, Fellow Bankers, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen! First of all I would like to congratulate the administration of Preston University Peshawar for organizing this Seminar. It was the earlier part of the 1990s when the inherent weaknesses of the banking structure were recognized and a comprehensive reform process in the banking industry was initiated. The underlying objectives of the initiatives were to ensure and create a level-playing-field environment of competition in the market and to strengthen the governance and supervision of the financial institutions. In fact, the reforms were targeted to adopt a market-based indirect system of monetary, exchange and credit management to ensure the efficient allocation of financial resources. Today, 15 years later, it would no longer be an exaggeration but a fair statement that the landscape of the banking system in Pakistan has changed. The country has made a significant progress in implementing financial sector reforms and has achieved a more competitive market structure with expanding market share of private sector banks. Moreover, significant gains have...
