Even if Rizal liked painting much, he was not then intending to make art as his profession. He was not yet certain of what course to pursue. In his Memorias de un estudiante, he says that he was still undecided then about the university career he would follow as the school year 1877-1878 is nearing.
Different authors of Rizal give different answers on what and who influenced Rizal in opting what course to take. It is the question of who made the final choice, he himself, his mother, his father, his brother or the Jesuits.
Rizal tells us that his mother was worried about him pursuing a university career in Manila because of her ingenuity, or possibly her motherly instinct. His mother Teodora feared that Rizal would come to a bad end just as the fate of ilustrados before like Father Burgos. Buthe does not say in memorias de un estudiante, he did not specify what her mother preferred for him. His brother Paciano discouraged him from taking law, because of the belief that Rizal would not be able to practice that profession due to the political conditions that time.
In his memorias de un estudiante, he recalls: “I enrolled in Metaphysics because, aside From the fact that I had doubts about the career I should follow, my father wanted me to study it (Metaphysics).” Very likely, Don Francisco had pictured Rizal having a career in Civil Law. And due to this, Don Francisco advised Rizal to take up the preparatory course of “Metaphysics.” (Rizal terms the philosophical subjects he’s taking up then as “Metaphysics.”) But in the University of Santo Tomas that time, there was no such thing as a career of Metaphysics, neither a Faculty called “Philosophy and Letters.” The career of “Philosophy” was not offered that time because the Faculty of Philosophy then, even if not really closed, was not functioning. However, philosophical subjects were to be studied by all students. The philosophical subjects he enrolled were Cosmology, Metaphysics, Theodicy and History of Philosophy, constituted the Preparatory Course of Theology and Law. This fact that he enrolled such philosophical subjects means that he intended to either take Theology, Canon Law, or Civil Law. But obviously, Theology and Canon Law were no longer options for him since he was disillusioned to become a priest. So his father was then thinking of having a lawyer in the family.
First Year in UST. Rizal, who was barely 16 years old that time, was an early enrolee for the School Year 1877-1878, for he is the second in the list of those who paid the matriculation fee of eight pesos for the first semester. Being a student of the University, he then had the privilege of being exempted from the polos y servicios or compulsory community labor required from all male of his age, and from paying the donativo de Zamboanga imposed on all taxpaying citizens that time.
Jose was the only student from Calamba, and only the second student from Calamba, after his brother Paciano, ever to study a university career that school year.
A new academic atmosphere welcomes him in UST. He had to leave behind the regulated time in Ateneo, where he has a schedule for everything that he does. The University was a different world to him. Rafael Palma, a boarder of the Ateneo in 1886 and a student of Law at the University years later would remark afterwards that “the method of instruction in the University was very different from the Ateneo. There was more freedom and very little control on one’s private and scholastic conduct. In a way, this method was similar to that in European universities where students were considered matured and responsible. One did not have to attend early Mass. One spent only three hours a day in class, and the rest of the time was free.” some students made la cuacha and just waste their time foolishly. An additional remark of Palma is that, since he had plenty of time, he decided to take a two-year course in Commerce at the Ateneo. Jose Rizal did something similar, for while studying philosophical subjects in UST, he enrolled for a vocational course at the Ateneo, which may have been a suggestion from his brother Paciano or his father Francisco. He enrolled to the course on Land Surveying leading to the title of Agrimensor y Perito Tasador de Tierras which he finished in a year. He could not take this course in UST since it was not offered then. In addition, he also had the feeling of being attached to the Ateneo that he remained loyal to it, perhaps because of having studied there for a long time. The philosophical subjects that Rizal took were definitely not easy for those students who just graduated from high school. This is aside from the fact that it had to be studied in Latin. But at the end of the school year, he obtained the grade of Sobresaliente (Excellent) in all the foursubjects. In their class of 60 students, only 49 passed, and only eight were given the grade of Sobresaliente.
Finishes Surveying course in Ateneo. At this time also, Rizal also finished his vocational course on Land Surveying. He got Sobresaliente in the two subjects required, Topography and Agriculture, and with a medal of distinction. To sum these up, School Year1877-1878 was successful indeed.
Pre-Medical Course and First Year of Medicine. At the onset of June 1878, Rizal had finally resolved to pursue Medicine, not Law for which he had taken preparatory courses. Even if he did not left a clear clue as to the reasons for this choice, it has always been written and said that the failing eyesight of his mother was a determining factor for him choosing the Medical course.
Medicine was an unknown profession for three centuries because of the lack of opportunities to that career. But when the Faculty of Medicine was established in 1871 and first Licentiate students graduated from the same in 1877, the trends of the students were revolutionized because of the growing popularity of the course. There was a steady increase in enrolment in the field of Medicine and Pharmacy then. And to further stimulate the Filipino youth towards the career of Medicine, the University authorities requested the government to give priority to the local graduates over peninsular doctors when public posts of the Department of Health were to be filled. Thus, it may also be inferred that Rizal may have been influenced by the upsurge of students taking up Medicine that time and of its growing popularity.
On taking Preparatory Medical Course and First Year of Medicine simultaneously. It provides in the existing legislation that a student of Medicine is required to have finished the preparatory course first before proceeding to Medicine proper. This preparatory course was also called Curso de Ampliacion or Advanced Course in Physics, Chemistry and Natural History which complements the studies taken in the same sciences in the last year of high school education. In opposition to the rule, Rizal took both courses at the same time. Actually, it was strictly forbidden by law to such practice, and only for very convincing reasons could the Governor-General of the Philippines make an exception after consulting the Rector of the University. Thus, petitions and requests for that time were denied. But four students, including Rizal, were very fortunate for having been granted the privilege of taking simultaneously the preparatory course and the first year of Medicine. In the Borrador de Matriculas which contains the payment of the enrolment fees, the name of Rizal is entered in the list of first year medical students with a marginal note by the Secretary General: De orden del P. Vice Rector, asimultanear con el Preparatorio (by order of the Vice-Rector, to take the course together withthe Preparatory of Medicine.)
It is noteworthy that at this time, the alleged discrimination and unfairness in the University in the 19th century, was in favour of Rizal.
Between the classes of Ampliacion in the Main Building, the daily displacements to San Jose College Building (houses the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy since the University’s resources and funds that time do not permit the maintenance of the said faculties; the Colegio de San Jose resolved this problem), and occasional goings to the Academy of Painting, the school year ended without major incidents. The result of Rizal’s hectic and varied activity can be described in the following lines: In the course of Ampliacion, he obtained the following grades: In Advanced Physics, Aprovechado (Very Good), the fifth best among among22 students who passed the course; in Advanced Chemistry, Sobresaliente (Excellent), one of the only four students who got such high mark; and in Advanced Natural History, Aprovechado, the fourth best among 24 students who succeeded in passing the subject. He was not the best, but certainly was very high in the general standing of his class. In the Medical course, his grade was Bueno (Good) globally for all the subjects. Only one student merited Sobresaliente (Jose Luna Novicio) and six obtained Aprovechado. Rizal in eight place was still in a desirable position in a group of 18 who successfully passed the course.
Second Year of Medicine. Out of 18 students enrolled, eleven passed and seven failed. Rizal received the global mark of Bueno (Good) in all the subjects. These grades may not seem good but for a student of Dr. Jose Franco, to have passed must have been a relief and an achievement.
Third Year of Medicine. Rizal’s class now only composed of eleven students, two were Spaniards and nine were Filipinos. At the end of the school year, two failed the course. Rizal obtained Aprobado in General Pathology, in which all students, except two, received the same passing grade; Sobresaliente in Therapeutics; and Bueno in Surgical Anatomy. The gradesmay not seem outstanding, but it should be noted that only two students fared better than him, namely, Jose Luna Novicio and Cornelio Mapa.
Fourth Year of Medicine. Rizal obtained a global grade of Notable (Very Good) in all his subjects, the second best student in a decimated class of seven who passed the course. All in this year 1882, he is now entitled to receive due recognition for the studies of Land Surveying which he completed in 1877-1878 at the Ateneo.

The following is a list of students who were examined in the fourth year. Out of 24 who enrolled in the first year of Medicine, only 7 survived. It is also noteworthy to mention that only one Spaniard survived, getting only a poor passing grade (aprobado). Thus, it cannot be said that Spaniards were favoured over Filipino students unless convinced and proven by valid documents.

When you think about it historical heroes exist as receptacles of a nation’s hopes and dreams. They are the guiding lights, the individuals who helped shape the nature of a people. Heroes are, in other words, can be considered the soul and conscience of a country. Their philosophies, ideals, and examples acting as the benchmarks for right collective action. That, as well, is why each generation must recast their nation’s heroes in new forms and view them in new perspectives. Heroes and their actions, much like all of history, are consistently up for reinterpretation. Without that process they will never be relevant. A disturbing question to ask is if our heroes are really relevant today. As a result, studying how our heroes are approached and constructed in the public sphere gives a country an understanding of who they are as a people. Heroes are a reflection of the values of a people. And if that is the case, as I strongly suspect it is, then the way we currently construct Jose Rizal (the way we approach him and his legacy) does not speak too well of us. ...The movie Jose Rizal which was excellently played by Cesar Montano as the lead role was a heartwarming one that shows how Rizal runs his life. While watching the movie, I felt mixed emotions given the fact that it was made to help us, Filipinos, understand what our national hero had done for the country. It shows how Rizal really love his mother country for him to sacrificed his own life. The film also works through a series of flashback showing Rizal as a genius, a write, a doctor, an artist, a lover, a friend, a brother, a son that gives texture to his character. It shows the great explanation of the Philippine history, the nationalism and heroism in a non-violent manner, though, there were times that the characters speak in Spanish language and I couldn’t understand it unless I will read the subtitles. I could also say that the other characters weren’t having any difficulties in reciting their Spanish lines. The actors’ dedication for the film is inevitable especially Cesar Montano who is very perfect for the role of Rizal. His values and great performance as the lead actor is impeccable and has a great impact on me as the audience of the said film. Also, the supporting casts like Jhong Hilario who played as Rizal’s servant, Jaime Fabregas as Rizal’s attorney did a great job on portraying their role fluently. ...RIZAL SA DAPITAN The movie “Rizal sa Dapitan” shows Rizal’s life in exile in the said place before his execution. During his exile, he refused to just mope around and wait for his freedom. Instead, he made his exile in Dapitan very fruitful as much as possible. For fruitful leisure, he planted several kinds of plants, made an irrigation system, and sculpted. He offered free medicinal check-ups for the locals and even performed a surgery on his mother, blinded by a severe cataract, when she and Jose Rizal’s sisters left from Hong Kong to visit him. He became a local teacher or “maestro” for the young boys, offering free education for the less fortunate. And of course, like any other young man, he fell in love and got married to an Irish-American who came from Hong Kong to Dapitan, Josephine Bracken, who asked for help to cure her blind father. Towards the end of the movie, a fellow doctor and a member of the KKK, Pio Valenzuela, visited him to ask for advice on their planned “revolution”. But since the colony was not yet ready for a revolution, he just advised that the KKK should first stock up on armory and weapon through their rich fellow countrymen and train for battle.
