Sean Lennon, son of the late John Lennon, recently wrote an article for The New York Times concerning a town meeting that took place in the local high school of Delaware County, New York state. The meeting was held to discuss infrastructure that a gas company wants to put in place ready for hydraulic fracturing. The gas company held the meeting to discuss the benefits to the local residents by bringing clean energy, in the form of natural gas, to millions. In the article Sean shows subjectivity by exhibiting that he has strong feelings of sentiment about the land right from the start by the title he chose for his article, “Destroying Precious Land for Gas.” He says the land is “precious.” Precious means something that is of great value, and something that should not be treated carelessly. In describing the land in this way Sean is saying that the land holds great value for him. He continues by saying, “Where the Catskill Mountains curl up into little kitten hills” (Lennon, 2012). The description of the mountains as “kittens” brings to mind warm, fluffy, purring little kittens. This emphasizes further that Sean’s feelings for the land are warm and loving. He also connects memories of his late father to his family farm, “… skipping stones with my father and drinking unpasteurized milk” (Lennon, 2012). Research shows that John Lennon died when Sean was five years old; therefore, he would not have many memories to hold on to, so one can assume that those he has would be special to him. Speaking of these memories in connection to the land re-emphasizes just how important this farm is to him. The tone of the piece is very loving, not only to the land, but also to what it represents to Sean.
