Small Business And Entrepreneurship

Assignment Topic:
"Rob Kardashian"

Written By: Tariq Al Lawati Entrepreneurship is one of the most successful ways of starting a business, and this essay will outline the story of an upcoming entrepreneur who could or by all means will not make a huge success in the market. However, first lets explain what the term "entrepreneur" means. An entrepreneur is "Someone who exercises initiative by organizing a venture to take benefit of an opportunity and, as the decision maker, decides what, how, and how much of a good or service will be produced"[1]. In other words, it is someone who initiates or starts a business by spotting an opportunity in the market, has a suitable place to run it and by being the decision maker of the business can eventually make a self benefit or profit from it. However, it is not as simple as it sounds. Along with having a suitable place and having creative ideas, there are some risks that come into play as well. Therefore, we can safely say that an entrepreneur is by nature a risk taker. That being said, the risks are neither negligible nor too vigorous. Entrepreneurs like to describe themselves as moderate risk takers. It is to my understanding that entrepreneurship is more like a stereotype, in the sense that most entrepreneurs have the same set of traits or behaviors. According to many recourses, whether it was the internet, or the "Small Business and Entrepreneurship" text book that we study in class, there are mainly four traits that almost all agree on. Entrepreneurs rely on themselves mostly, are highly optimistic, always strive for moderate risk challenges, and they strive for distinction through excellence. Now that I have briefly explained what an entrepreneur is, I would like to give you some information about a newly blooming entrepreneur who is just about to hit the market by the name of Rob Kardashian.

Let us begin with his life. Rob Kardashian was born in Los Angeles, USA. He is the son of the late attorney Robert Kardashian and Kris Jenner. His father, mostly known for the O.J. Simpson trial, died on September 30, 2003. However, his mother Kris divorced Robert in 1989 and married the former Olympian Bruce Jenner in 1991. Rob is the only son of four siblings, his three sisters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardasian are already very successful entrepreneurs and celebrities with their own clothing line, television show and a few other businesses including make-up and fragrances. He on the other hand only starred on a television show called "dancing with the stars" and has been laying low ever since with nothing interesting to show off. Being the only male, he has always been intimidated by his successful sisters, and has always been trying to prove to himself as well as others that he does not lack the creativity nor the smartness to start a new business and that is how he came up with the idea of socks.

Rob has always loved socks, "socks are something I've always been passionate about"[2] he stated. His idea was to start a dress type socks line which are very colorful compared to the normal dress socks that people have been wearing for decades. Also being that it was his own idea, he wanted to name his socks line "Arthur George" which has nothing to do with the name "Kardashian" which clearly was a risk that he was happy to take. The name Kardashian has its own fans, and a lot of them, but that name is associated with his three sisters and since the socks line is exclusively for him, he wanted to make sure that people would buy it because they are actually appealing rather than just for the famous Kardashian name. That enhances what I said earlier about entrepreneurs, in the sense that he is self reliant i.e. he is depending on himself and only himself to start the socks line, he takes moderate risks i.e. he did not use the name "Kardashian" but he used his own middle name "Arthur George", strives for distinction through excellence i.e. he wants the people to love the socks because of their excellence not for the name of the brand, and is highly optimistic about it i.e. he would not be going ahead with it otherwise.

Now we come to my opinion about the whole socks line idea. Coming up with the colorful socks was a very creative and smart idea. I mean let us face it, people have been wearing the same uni-colored dress socks for such a long time and its becoming very boring. Surely it is not one of the biggest ideas around but an idea like this could make a huge break in the market. It might sound brainless to start a whole business revolved around colored dress socks, but let us keep in mind that most entrepreneurs make a break because they were thinking outside the box, and not within the current rules of their time. Let us consider a simple example of the Omani Dishdasha, which was always plain white for a very long time, and then suddenly someone came up with the idea of making a white dishdasha with colored button lines, and a colored layer around the wrist and just as how surprising that became the new trend, the new colored dress socks of Rob Kardashian could make the trend and set a new bar for socks producers around the world.

Medical Case Study: Kris Humfrey's Case

...TO: Professor Wright FROM: #35 RE: Discussion II DATE: September 27, 2014 Our client, Kim Karda, met Kris Humfrey in 2004. They married, in New Jersey, in January 2009. In May 2010, Karda gave birth to a baby girl. Several months later, the child was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease (TSD), a debilitating hereditary disease that always results in death. Upon the child’s diagnosis, Karda learned that she and Humfrey were both carriers of the TSD gene. The child died on February 15, 2014. On March 15, 2014, Karda discovered that Humfrey knew he was a TSD carrier at the time of marriage and withheld this fact. Karda hired our firm in August 2014 and is seeking an annulment on the grounds that Humfrey’s concealment that he was a diagnosed TSD carrier at the time of marriage constitutes fraud as to the essentials of marriage. I. Karda will likely be granted an annulment under New Jersey law because Humfrey’s concealment that he was a diagnosed TSD carrier constitutes fraud as to the essentials of marriage and because she did not ratify the marriage after discovery. In New Jersey, judgment of nullity of marriage may be rendered in all cases, when: The parties, or either of them, lacked capacity to marry due to want of understanding because of mental condition, or the influence of intoxicants, drugs, or similar agents; or where there was a lack of mutual assent to the marital relationship; duress; or fraud as to the essentials of marriage; and has not subsequently ratified...

Skechers Commercial

...One of the top rated advertisements shown during this year’s super bowl was for Skechers new GOrun sneakers, created by Rob Siltanen, chairman and chief creative officer of Siltanen & Partners. Last super bowl, the company used celebrity Kim Kardashian to create buzz for their Shapeups sneakers by showing a sex appeal advertisement. Kardashian’s contract expired in late 2011 and she was not resigned by Skechers due to her recent negative publicity. This year, Kim Kardashian was replaced by a French bulldog who appealed to a wider audience. The commercial featured the dog named Mr. Quigley who was sporting athletic clothing and two pairs of red Skechers Gorun sneakers. He is shown racing a pack of greyhounds at Tucson Greyhound Park and not only wins the race, but also manages to do the moonwalk across the finish line to rapper Tone Loc’s hit single, “Wild Thing”. The commercial ends with a funny remark stated by billionaire entrepreneur and owner of Landmark Theaters and the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban. The use of animals, especially dogs, was a featured trend of this year’s super bowl commercials. A lot of people enjoy pets, so the use of a cute dog in this commercial makes it easy for anyone to relate to. In the Skechers commercial, the use of Mr. Quigley demonstrates the company’s attempt at humor appeal for their audience and it is also a metaphor for the brand as the company’s CMO, Leonard Armato, states “There’s an underdog in all of us”. Skechers succeeded with...

News Program Analysis

...Kendall Jenner and Her Racy Modeling Photo Cynthia Park COMM/310 June 9, 2014 Terry Marler Kris Jenner, the mother of the infamous Kardashian clan, has recently been in the news due to a scandalous photo of her 18 year old daughter, Kendall Jenner, which she shared through Twitter. Kendall is shown topless in the photo, covering her breasts with her hands. This photo was taken for the catchy “In Bed with W Magazine” Campaign. Although this photo is very racy, the news outlets that were discussing this photo were more concerned that Kendall’s mother, Kris Jenner, was extremely proud of this photo. In the interview that Kris Jenner had with Huffington Post Live, she stated that “She has like, the perfect body, especially one that wants to be in the modeling business. I don’t know, I got a lot of curves and I couldn’t pull that off. But she always looks remarkable.” This interview had many news outlets struggling with the fact that Kris Jenner is very open and honest about her 18 year old daughter and her approval of these photos seems to be too aggressive. There was one show in particular that was very prejudiced when it came to Jenner and her views on her children, especially with this photo. The show, The Young Turks (TYT), had four different analysts that were sharing their opinions on what they would do in their own lives and giving Kris Jenner quite a bit of backlash on her view of her daughter. The points that each show had made was sharing the fact that not...

The Bucket List

...The bucket list The Bucket List; what can I say? The Bucket List is a movie starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson about the exploits in life they never got to accomplish and set out to do so after discovering they were going to die. It is an interesting take on death and how to deal with death. It shows many different viewpoints on the subject of death not just from the view of Edward (Nicholson) or Carter (Freeman.) This movie really makes you think about how you live your life. The Bucket List was considered one of the most uplifting movies of the year. These men both view death in different ways. Carter in the beginning accepted death; if he did not accept death yet the movie would have been over fairly quick. You can tell he accepted death because he started writing his bucket list as a metaphorical contract that states he has given his life and is ready to die. However towards the end of the movie it seems Carter has no longer accepted death because he refuses to go back home to his family after starting the list. I think he feels this way because he thinks when he gives up on the list that will signify the end. Edward in the beginning does not accept death he refuses to deal with funeral arrangements and the passing down of his possessions. Towards the end Edward realizes that his life has been fulfilled not from completing the list but truly finding a lifelong friend in Carter. It makes you wonder how different these men’s lives would be if they were not to meet...

Stand by Me

...“Stand By Me” is a film directed by Rob Reiner, which is based on the novella “The Body” by Stephen King. Stand By Me is the story of four twelve year olds living in a small town in the year 1959, whose lives were changed by a chance adventure that they embarked on at the end of an indolent summer. The four boys were Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton), Chris Chambers (River Phoenix), Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman), and Vern Tessio (Jerry O'Connell). It fits into the film genre coming of age. This genre is outlines as a small group of individuals who have a life changing experience in the natural world. They are usually are the same sex, If not the opposing character would be more masculine/feminine and clearly more suited to hanging round with the group of the opposite sex. The director of the film is keen to show a very strong message, which is apparent though out the film. We are alone in this long journey to adulthood. He expresses this in a variety of ways. One method is cinematography. He frequently uses perspective and panoramic shots, which charts their long, eventful but beautiful journey to the back Harlow Road. The incoming train is another way Reiner shows the boys fear of adulthood. The train is a large, opposing and fast moving object; the threat is objective rather than impersonal. It is one of the imagery factors used he uses to add to his message. Other references to the adult world are seen as enclosed and often hazy, used...

An important aspect of the important relationship between Chris and Gordie is the strength of their friendship. This is shown in the incident of Gordie’s cap being stolen by Ace and Eyeball. Flesh Market by Nicola Morgan

...Fleshmarket By Nicola Morgan The theme of obsession is important in the novel ‘‘Fleshmarket’’ by Nicola Morgan. ------------------------------------------------- ‘‘Fleshmarket’’ is set in Edinburgh in 1828. Two of the main characters are Robbie and Essie who are brother and sister. They live in an awful, poverty stricken environment in the old town after everything changed when their mother died at the hands of Doctor Robert Knox. Robbie Blames Knox for his horrible life and suffering as he believes Knox has not suffered yet and he took away the good life Robbie nearly had before Knox operated on his mum and this leads to his deep obsession with Knox. Robbie’s obsession begins when he is outside the lecture theatre and inside his mum is getting her operation ‘‘He had felt her pain as though it was his, it had burnt him and left its mark.’’ This suggests that Robbie suffered too and he is scarred by hat his mum had to endure emotionally and permanently. When she gets home she is told to rest but on the fourth day Robbie witnesses his mum in hallucinating and in pain ‘‘she did not recognise her trembling son with his eyes so wide and wet. She threw her sweat-soaked blankets off, rattled with bone-deep cold, screamed at the snakes, writhing before her eyes, vomited, clawed, moaning at the blackening rash that crept over her body.’’ This shows that Robbie is so scared and worried at his mum hallucinating and fighting infection due to the operation Knox preformed and this is the...

The Body by Steven King

...Michael McMurray Hovde L English 101 25 October 2014 The Body by Steven King Set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon, over the Labor Day weekend in September 1959 young Gordie, our main character, is a quiet, yet smart boy with a fondness for telling stories and for writing. He has a very complicated relationship with his father. His father doesn’t appreciate his young son’s talent for writing. Following the death of his football-star older brother Denny in a jeep accident young Gordie feels rejected by his father and invisible to his mother. Gordie did not have a strong relationship with his older brother. Witch contradicts the movie (Stand by Me) by portraying Denny as paying much more attention to Gordie than his parents. Gordie spends his free time with his three best friends: Chris Chambers who is from a family of criminals, alcoholics, and is usually stereotyped accordingly; even though he does not conform to the perceptions and stigmas attached to his family. Teddy Duchamp who is a peculiar and emotionally unstable boy after his mentally unhinged father held his ear to a stove, nearly burning it off. And Vern Tessio, who is overweight, timid, and often on the receiving end of a good hearted joke or two. While looking for a jar of pennies that Vern himself had buried underneath the porch and forgotten where he did so, he overhears his older brother and his friend Charlie Hogan discussing what to do after they had discovered Ray Brower's dead body while...

Stand by Me

...Stand By Me “Stand by Me” is a film about the journey of four boys from Castle Rock, Oregon, USA in search of a dead body. The film is directed by Rob Reiner, based on a book called “The Body” by Stephen King. I am going so concentrate on, and describe the main character of the story, Gordie LaChance who is played by Will Wheaton. I will show you how he is coming to terms with adulthood throughout the film. I will use camera techniques to show you this. The opening of the film enters with a long shot of ripened cornfields and a car placed at the side of the road. It is clearly autumn with winter on its way this matches Gordie's mood and time of life. The lighting in these first images suggest sunset and the day being over. The music is peaceful and full of emotion. The music straight away indicates loneliness. This environment tells us that the man in the car, Gordie LaChance is feeling lonely and sad. The emotions on his face and his body language tell us this also. A close up of a paper, which he is clutching in his hand, is the reason for this. The headline on the paper reads, “ Attorney Chris Chambers fatally stabbed in restaurant.” Chris was Gordie’s best friend when he was twelve years old. The directors have two boys cycle past the Landover and off into the distance in a point of view shot. This camera technique is excellent as it shows us boys cycling into the distance takes us to the past, as the structure of the film is a flashback. There is a zoom in from a medium...
