Robert Coles’s theory is that children learn through life experiences. This includes how children start to develop the idea from what is wrong and right. His studies began when Coles had a conversation, as a psychiatrist, with a little girl who wanted to go to a segregated school. Coles’s immediately heard about the girl and wished to have a conversation over her decisions and thoughts. She explained that she felt sorry for the people who wanted to kill her. Coles was shocked to know that she felt sorry for them rather than fear or anger. He realized, over various conversations, that the little girl had a lot of wisdom in her, and developed morality.
