Robert S. Dietz was born in Westfield, NJ on September 14, 1914. He went to school at the University of Illinois where he received his BS., MS. and Ph.D. in Geology. Having been raised in a household with both parents as engineers, it was no surprise that science seemed to fascinate him a lot. He was one of the pioneers in advancing the process of seafloor spreading. He attempted to find the seafloor by using SCUBA gear and many other inventions made for deep sea diving. Robert Dietz is a famous geologist who studied the ocean floor and furthered our understanding of seafloor spreading.

Robert Dietz was known for his contributions to furthering our knowledge on seafloor spreading and his work in finding impact craters. Dietz theorized new crust formation at the mid-ocean ridges and subduction of older crust at the trenches. Dietz’s research also helped contribute to the theory of plate tectonics. Dietz correctly believed that the lithosphere was moving on top of the Asthenosphere with convection currents.He had a deep understanding of most of Harry Hess’s theory. This helped him add to the theory of seafloor spreading made by Harry Hess. He also correctly theorized that basalt was the type of rock that ridges were composed of. Furthermore, he also pointed out many impact craters on the earth’s surface. Had it not been for Dietz, nobody would have had a proper understanding of seafloor
