In 1955, Robert F. Williams joined the local chapter of the NAACP. The chapter wasn’t very active and began declining in numbers, but when Williams was elected president and Dr. Albert Perry vice-president, things began to change. The organization worked on goals to change the segregated town of Monroe. To begin with, they worked on integrating the public library. After that success, in 1957 Williams also led efforts to integrate the public swimming pools. The NAACP members sorted out a peaceful demonstration, yet some drew gunfire. Nobody was captured or arrested, in spite of the fact that law implementation offices were present.
In the summer of 1957, rumors started to spread that the KKK was going to attack the house of Dr.Albert Perry, vice-president of the Monroe NAACP. Williams and many other Armed Guard men went to Perry’s house to defend it. When the KKK members appeared and started firing shots from their vehicle, Williams, and his supporters returned the fire, driving the delinquents away. “It has always been an accepted right of Americans, as the history of our Western states proves, that where the …show more content…
In 1959, a black woman was sexually assaulted by a white man and the jury in Monroe acquitted the trial. Williams made a historic statement on the courthouse steps, “If the law if the United States Constitution cannot be enforced in this social jungle called Dixie, it is the time that Negroes must defend themselves even if it is necessary to resort to violence.” Williams, they saw that protecting his family and community was more critical than he thought. African-Americans have had a long and deliberate struggle and Robert Williams got a great mass of people behind him to make a great leap forward to their humanity, it was time to meet violence with

B. BIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM BLAKE¹ William Blake was an English poet, engraver, and a painter. A boldly imaginative rebel in both his through and art, he combined poetic and pictorial genius to explore life. YOUTH William Blake was born in London, England, on November 28, 1757, the second son of a men’s clothing merchant. From his earliest year he saw vision. He would see trees full of angels on similar sights, if this were not true mystical visions; they were the results of the artistic intense spiritual understanding of the world. From his early teens Blake wrote poems, often setting them to melodies of his own composition. At the age of ten, Blake started at the well-known Park’s DrawingSchool, at age of fourteen; he began a seven year apprenticeship to an engraver. It was as an engraver...

The Standard Error of Regressions

...Journal of Economic Literature Vol. XXXIV (March 1996), pp. 97-114 The Standard Error of Regressions By D E I R D R E N . M C C L O S K E Y and STEPHEN T. ZILIAK University of Iowa Suggestions by two anonymous and patient referees greatly improved the paper. Our thanks also to seminars at Clark, Iowa State, Harvard, Houston, Indiana, and Kansas State universities, at Williatns College, and at the universities of Virginia and Iowa. A colleague at Iowa, Calvin Siehert, was materially helpful. T cant for science or policy and yet be insignificant statistically, ignored by the less thoughtful researchers. In the 1930s Jerzy Neyman and Egon S. Pearson, and then more explicitly Abraham Wald, argued that actual investigations should depend on substantive not merely statistical significance. In 1933 Neyman and Pearson wrote of type I and type II errors: HE IDEA OF Statistical significance is old, as old as Cicero writing on forecasts (Cicero, De Divinatione, 1. xiii. 23). In 1773 Laplace used it to test whether comets came from outside the solar system (Elizabeth Scott 1953, p. 20). The first use of the very word "significance" in a statistical context seems to be John Venn's, in 1888, speaking of differences expressed in units of probable error; Is it more serious to convict an innocent man or to acquit a guilty? That will depend on the consequences of the error; is the punishment death or fine; what is the danger to the community of released...

(Jun. 1980): 281-308. By 1900 almost 156,000 steam engines were used in factories. This is where the steam engine first gained popularity. The article also discusses the spread of the steam engine for various uses, one of which became known as the steamboat. In spite of the importance accorded the steam engine during nineteenth-century industrialization, little is known about its rate of diffusion in the United States. Another purpose of this paper is to enhance our knowledge about the spread of this technology. New evidence on steam power use in 1820, 1850, and 1860, combined with published census data from 1870, permits quantitative estimates of the regional variations in timing, pace, and extent of usage before 1900. Taggart, Jr. 1.1 Introduction “Junk” bonds, as they are popularly called, or “high-yield’’ bonds, as they are termed by those wishing to avoid pejorative connotations, are simply bonds that are either rated below investment grade or unrated altogether.’ Fueled by the introduction of newly issued junk bonds in 1977, this segment of the bond market has grown rapidly in recent years and now accounts for more than 15 percent of public corporate bonds outstanding. However, the growth of junk bond financing, particularly in hostile takeover situations, has been bitterly denounced. For example, Martin Lipton, a merger specialist with the firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen, and Katz, has argued that junk bond financing threatens “the destruction of the fabric of American industry” (Williams 1984). In a similar vein, twelve U.S. senators signed a letter in support of Federal...
