If a stone is missing from the fence, you can bet that the two men are out there putting it back together piece by piece. Frost presents to the reader the ideas of barriers between people, communication, friendship and the sense of security people gain from barriers. Robert Frost was born March 26, 1874 in California. He became interested in poetry after moving to Massachusetts at the age of eleven. His first published poem was My Butterfly in 1894. A year later, Frost married Elinor Miriam White. They moved to England where Robert met Ezra Pound, a poet who helped get the word out about Frost’s talent. Three years later Robert and Elinor moved back to the United States where Frost was already known after having published two collections, one named North of Boston. Mending Wall was part of this collection. During his writing career in poetry, Frost won four Pulitzer Prizes. After running a farm in New England, Frost’s writing became heavily influenced by the beautiful landscape around him. His writing often included nature. He appeared to write about situations individuals find themselves in no matter the time period. ...8, 2015 Marschaneil Brown Comparing “Sonnet 130” and “The Oven Bird” “Sonnet 130” written by William Shakespeare and “The Oven Bird” by Robert Frost are both sonnets, but written in a different ways. Even though they were written years apart, they have some similarities and differences. Each author does however make the sonnets their own by adding pieces that are unique to them. After reading both “Sonnet 130” and “The Oven Bird” readers are able to analyze each sonnet by looking at the poems rhyme scheme, form, and structure. William Shakespeare wrote “Sonnet 130” sometime in the mid-1590s, but it wasn’t published until 1609. “Shakespeare’s collections of sonnets are concerning four characters: the speaker, a handsome young man, an older woman, and another poet who is a rival of the speaker” ("An Analysis of Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare," n.d.). In “Sonnet 130,” the speaker in this poem, describes the woman that he loves in a very critical way, but claims that he does in fact love her. “The Oven Bird” was written much later in 1916 by American poet, Robert Frost. In the poem, the bird is personified as possessing the human characteristic of knowledge. The hardwoods lose their leaves in autumn and stay bare through the winter. In spring, the first green to appear is really gold as the buds break open. The willows and maples have this temporary gold hue. In only a few days, the leaves mature to green. Figurative Language Figurative language uses "figures of speech" - a way of saying something other than the literal meaning of the words. For example, "All the world's a stage" Frost often referred to them simply as "figures." Frost said, "Every poem I write is figurative in two senses. Much of his success is credited towards the blank verse style of writing, within which he addresses the basic compound and detriment of human nature, a particular poem entitled, ‘The Wood-Pile’, showcases these themes. A single story is often told by his assorted works; to consciously move away from modernized society in order to find something worth understanding. That what can be sought in nature, away from the roles or responsibilities infringed upon man while immersed in a modern society, are of more depth and personal importance than otherwise found. In ‘The Wood-Pile’, Frost uses visual imagery to explore the themes of nature, death, and limitations, showing that man is responsible for his own constraints. The concept of nature within ‘The Wood-Pile’ takes on a separate reality of the subject’s mind. The speaker is able to both influence and react to the nature within the frozen swamp and understand that nature is a separate yet equal force which is actively syncopated with humans.
