Robert Smeethile hated ship rides, and Robert Smeethile was me. I was on a ship, going to Mr. John Sutter's mill to tell him information about our deal about wood supply. The trip was taking five months now and I was getting pretty bored. People in the ship were dressed up as if they were going to go to work in the forest and had strange tools and machines. I wondered what this was all about. But I only wanted to tell Mr. Sutter all my stuff and go right back to my home in England.
Then, all of a sudden, our captain said,"San Francisco! California spotted at last!" I was relieved and happy that the journey was short. It took me about two hours on horseback to get to Mr. Sutter's mill. I had to tell him about my agreement to the deal…show more content… Sutter! Where are you?" I called out nervously. There was no reply back. I did not like this creepy environment so I chose to go to Sutter's Fort. At Sutter's Fort, it was unusually full of people, to many people. I noticed a fat man jumping up and down like an eager little boy about to receive a pile of candy. All of these things seemed unusual to me, so I chose to overhear their conversation.
"Gold! Gold, gold! Nuggers, nuggers, nuggers!" said the fat man with a gleeful look on his face.
"Where?" asked the man's Chinese-American interlocutor.
"All over this area'n. People'll start flockin the place sir!" Replied the plump man.
I started to get quivery and excited. I had studied geology only a little, but I knew of the value of gold.
"It will be in the river. That's the best place to find gold," I muttered happily. With that being said, I went to Sacramento to buy some supplies. I was bright and cheerful the entire day and when going to sleep, I was jumpy and felt strange, in a good way. Nothing could break my good and eager mood, for I could only think about the riches that awaited me in the goldfields.
The next morning, I hurried up eating and dressing and took my horse to ride to ride to the closest part of the American River. But when I, Robert Smeethile, arrived there, I realized that I was not the only…show more content… I was exhausted by all my hard work in the river and mines. I did not like the experience because of all of the noisy shouting matches and all of the struggles of everyone. I felt so good when the steam ship arrived at England. The ship was almost emptied of coal and was at a bad state. Since I did not ever want to ever be reminded of the mining experience ever again, I gave my five gold nuggets to my dear friend, Zachking Henman. He was becoming overcome by debts and I knew I had to help him.
I had once heard about a Klondike gold rush when I was a child and was always interested in gold and mining, but now, I have experienced the sensation of mining for gold, so my thoughts have changed. It has now been two years since I went to California. My friend Zachking is now living cheerfully and well and I have recovered from the experience. I now thoroughly wonder about the diamond rush in South Africa. I have to go to make a seed supply deal there, so let's see what I can
